DescSee Schedule ORenown Regional Medical Center is an accredited, 808-licensed bed, general and acute-care hospital serving communities in northern Nevada, northeastern California and the adjacent areas of Oregon and Idaho. A not-for-profit hospital offering a full range of medical, diagnostic and ancillary services, Renown Regional provides the only designated Level II Trauma Center between Sacramento and Salt Lake City. It is a teaching hospital for the professional development of the region's healthcare professionals.Renown Regional provides necessary healthcare services regardless of race, creed, sex, national origin, handicap, age or ability to pay. People in our community have access to Renown Regional services in specialties including: cancer, heart, neurosciences, orthopedics, surgery, intensive care, behavioral health, addiction, healthy aging, healthcare innovation and women's and children's health. Renown Regional is governed by a board of community members, the majority of who live in our primary service area and who are neither employees, independent contractors or family members. Renown Regional extends privileges on its medical staff to all eligible and qualified physicians. All surplus funds are retained in the organization to make improvements in patient care, medical education and research. As part of an integrated health network, Renown Regional Medical Center provides many services to the community that otherwise would require that people travel to other cities to receive care. These programs, services and technology include: a Level II Trauma Center, a pediatric intensive care unit, TomoTherapy High Art System, Varian TrueBeam, biplane angiography, a dedicated PET/CT scanner, a Joint Commission-certified Primary Stroke Center, comprehensive amputee services, an ABRET-accredited Epilepsy Monitoring Lab, an Intersocietal Commission-accredited Echocardiography Lab, multi-specialty da Vinci Robotic Surgery Program, a Chest Pain Center using the D-SPECT heart camera, and first in the West to implement the Pritikin Intensive Cardiac Rehabilitation program. Renown Regional also offers access to the largest number of clinical research trials in the region. Renown Regional is comprised of the Medical Center and multiple Centers for Advanced Medicine. These house medical specialty and subspecialty practices. In partnership with the 786 physicians on its medical staff, Renown Regional offers more than 40 physician specialties, including cardiac surgery, cardiology, endocrinology, geriatrics, gynecologic oncology, infectious disease, neurosurgery, orthopedics, otolaryngology, pediatric anesthesia, pediatric endocrinology, pediatric gastroenterology, pediatric neurology, pediatric oncology and hematology, perinatology, plastic surgery, psychiatry, pulmonary medicine, radiation therapy, radiology, rheumatology and urology. For the fiscal year ending June 30, 2016, Renown Regional, along with its parent, Renown Health and its subsidiaries, provided more than $85 million in benefit to the community (using community benefit numbers gathered by the Nevada Hospital Association using state-approved criteria to ensure consistency). For a full report on the benefit Renown Health provided to our community as well as our needs assessment and community benefit plan go to www.renown.org/about-us/community.Desc

Renown Regional Medical CenterPart V, Section B, Line 5: Renown Health consulted several leading community organizations to determine the health status and needs of the surrounding community. The community organizations included Northern Nevada Medical Center, Saint Mary's Hospital, Washoe County Health District, and Healthy People Nevada Moving 2010 to 2020 report.
Renown Regional Medical CenterPart V, Section B, Line 6a: Renown South Meadows Medical Center and Renown Rehabiliation Hospital
Renown Regional Medical CenterPart V, Section B, Line 6b: Washoe County Health District
Renown Regional Medical CenterPart V, Section B, Line 11: The Community Benefits Implementation Strategy was approved in June 2015. In FY16, Renown Regional Medical Center, Renown South Meadows Medical Center, and Renown Rehabilitation Hospital along with other related entities, made substantial progress on our Community Benefit priorities. Below is a brief list of accomplishments of each of the priority areas identified in the plan: Behavioral Health - In FY16, Renown Behavioral Health completed over 600 mental health and substance abuse assessments at no charge for community members in crisis. Based on the results of the assessment, patients were connected with appropriate treatment and resource referrals. These assessments were completed in an outpatient setting, often preventing patients from presenting to the ER or an unnecessary inpatient psychiatric stay.Childhood Immunizations - In collaboration with two community organizations, we have increased access points for underserved children and seniors to receive vaccinations. During FY16, Immunize Nevada, with a Renown grant, participated in 15 events where 12,888 lives where touched. From these events, there were 2,543 vaccines given to uninsured children and 301 professionals were trained in WebIZ. Senior Flu Shot Outreach - A partnership with Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada was developed to provide underserved seniors and families with in-home assessments of safety and well-being, education into health and wellness and on-going case management where appropriate. During FY16, the program provided 139 vaccines to underserved seniors and 204 completed in-home assessments of safety and well-being and education into health and wellness. Dental Care - Renown has partnered with Community Health Alliance (CHA), a local FQHC. In FY16, CHA has provided 136 dental exams, 58 emergency exams, 55 extractions, 24 regular cleanings, 117 deep cleanings, 245 restorations (fillings and crowns), 10 dentures (full and partial), 20 denture repairs/relines, 78 nutritional counseling, 4 tobacco cessation counseling, and 80 oral hygiene instruction. Within this year, we saw improvement in oral hygiene in 19% of those presenting with poor or fair oral hygiene status. The populations that were reached included 67% pregnant women, 28% seniors, and 5% all others. Prenatal Care - The Centering Pregnancy model of group prenatal care was utilized by The Pregnancy Center. This dynamic care model integrates health assessment, education, and support in a group setting with courses that include nutrition, exercise and relaxation and family violence and abuse awareness. In FY16, more than 400 women completed Centering training with excellent health outcomes, including a reduced number of premature and/or low birth-weight babies and more women breastfeeding upon discharge. These patients represent about 5 percent of the patients overall who obtain services at the Pregnancy Center annually.Health Literacy and Navigation - During FY16, A one-time grant was given to the Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows (BGCTM) to help support Health Care Literacy and general navigation issues when accessing health care and other services. BGCTM was chosen because it touches several key health issues, in reference to the CHNA, such as: children, the Latino community, health care education, and access to health care. BGCTM and Renown Health have developed an outreach campaign to engage children and families throughout all of their locations. BGCTM will provide Renown Health and all other healthcare partners' access to a defined healthcare space in order to conduct health literacy programming, health care coverage navigation, and wellness checks. Additionally, BGCTM has worked with Renown to conduct health literacy programming, health care coverage navigation, and wellness checks in all of their locations. Mammography Screening - Increase availability of mammography screenings for low-income senior women. The expected outcome is to increase the number of low-income and minority women who have had a screening in the last 2 years. Renown Health and Northern Nevada HOPES, a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), will be partnering in FY17 to provide mammography services as well as provide patient care coordination.Community Hub - In FY16, in collaboration with Truckee Meadows Healthy Communities and several partners, 4 Family Health Festivals events were hosted. These events served over 1500 community members. Family Health Festivals included healthy cooking tips, Test Your Health Know-How, a book drive, flu vaccinations, dental fluoride treatments, the Food Bank's mobile pantry, health screenings for kids and adults, DACA & Immigration support, job application and resume help, SNAP assistance, Head Start/affordable day care registration and a variety of other free services. Safe Kids & Child Passenger Safety Fitting Station - For FY16, The Child Passenger Safety Fitting Station at Renown reached 1,561 children and of those children, 83% received new, safer car seats. Partnership with Local Non-Profit - For FY16, Renown partnered with Girls on the Run and a total of 327 girls at 22 schools in Washoe County were served. The Renown Grant expansion plan called for the addition of 5 new schools and so far, Girls on the Run has added 9 new schools, of which six are Title I schools. Healthy foods - In FY16, Renown Health worked with Urban Roots, a non-profit organization dedicated to growing healthy minds, bodies, and communities, by transforming the education process through hands on agricultural education services for youth in Northern Nevada. In collaboration, an Urban Farm location at Renown Health is currently under construction. The Urban Farm will provide vegetables to 100 families of four, for a year. Additionally, Urban Roots developed Farm to School, an educational curriculum that meets Next Generation Science Standards as well as Common Core reading and math standards. It includes 25 lessons for grades K-8 that include "How Much Sugar", "Worm Anatomy and "Food Mayhem Race". During FY16, the Farm-to-School educators visited school sites and worked with 838 students in 9 schools delivering the newly developed curriculum. Only students that participated in five or more Urban Roots lessons were asked to take pre- and post- surveys to determine changes in preference for healthy foods. Of the 838 students served, 533 participated in 5 or more lessons where 47.7% of the surveyed students demonstrated an improved preference for healthy foods.Identified Needs Not Being AddressedWe believe that our plan will allow us to start addressing some of the most pressing health needs in our community, but we recognize that we will not be able to tackle every issue we would like. Two issues in particular are substance abuse and adult obesity. Here are the reasons these health needs are not addressed as part of our plan.Substance Abuse: This community health need is being addressed by over 25 other organizations that offer a variety of substance abuse services including counseling, clinical treatment, rehabilitation, and social support for substance users. Join Together Northern Nevada also regularly convenes organizations for community wide efforts related to substance abuse.Adult Obesity: As part of Renown Health's high-quality healthcare services, we continue to work with all of our adult patients to address health concerns such as obesity. We do this one on one with patients through their doctors, or through visits and referrals to our nutritionists, or through our weekly health newsletter offering healthy lifestyle tips. In addition, we routinely arrange for classes and lectures on topics related to overall health including having speakers on proper exercise and nutrition. There is no new work being done in addition to the services we currently provide.
Renown Regional Medical CenterPart V, Section B, Line 13h: In addition to the federal poverty guidelines, we also consider eligibility for state assistance programs and homelessness or no documentation to establish indigence as factors in determining eligibility. All patients are expected to make a financial contribution towards their bill and are subject to pay at least a minimal co-payment so technically no free care is provided.
Renown Regional Medical CenterPart V, Section B, Line 16i: On every itemized bill and statement sent to the patient is a number they can call to get help with financial assistance. A financial counselor is made available to all self-pay patients upon admission. In addition, Patient Financial Assistance counselors proactively work with self-pay patients to aid in applying for financial assistance. The organization's website lists the phone number a patient can call to speak to a financial counselor.

Renown Regional Medical CenterPart V, Section B, Line 22d: The hospital facility determines the amounts generally billed using the look back method.
Renown Regional Medical CenterPart V, Section B, Line 24: Per our Financial Assistance Policy, no assistance is provided for non-medically necessary procedures regardless of eligibility.

Part I, Line 3c:In addition to the federal poverty guidelines, we also consider eligibility for state assistance programs and homelessness or no documentation to establish indigence as factors in determining eligibility. All patients are expected to make a financial contribution towards their bill and are subject to pay at least a minimal co-payment so technically no free care is provided.
Part I, Line 6a:The organization's community benefit report is contained in a report prepared by its parent corporation, Renown Health.Part I, Line 5c: The organization budgets the amount of charity care expected in the next year but does not use that estimate as a constraint on the amount of charity care provided.
Part I, Line 7:Charity care expense was converted to cost on line 7a using the cost-to-charge ratio derived from Worksheet 2. Unreimbursed medicaid and other unreimbursed costs on line 7b and 7c were calculated using the cost-to-charge ratio derived from Worksheet 2. Community health improvement, health professions education, subsidized health services, research and cash and in-kind contributions on lines 7e, 7f, 7g, 7h and 7i are reported from the organization's records.
Part I, Ln 7 Col(f):The amount of bad debt expense removed from total expenses to determine the percentage was $46,652,789.
Part III, Line 2:The amount included on Line 2 reflects the amount at charges reported in the financial statements.
Part III, Line 4:The footnote to the audited financial statements that addresses bad debt is on page 11 and 12 of the attached audit financial statements.
Part III, Line 8:The costing methodology for Line 7 uses the ratio of cost to charges from the FY16 as filed by the Medicare cost report.
Part III, Line 9b:Patients in the process of qualifying for state or local indigent programs or the organization's charity program are indicated with a particular payor class/status in the patient accounting system. The patient is not subject to collection efforts while in those classes/statuses.
Part VI, Line 2:Explanation: The organization reviews the current demographic information of the population it serves and the impact those demographics have on the health needs of the community. See explanation 4 for a description of the community. While the demographics start to tell the story of community health needs, Renown Health also consults with community partners and draws from state and local government, non-profits, and school district data sources to assess healthcare needs in the community. Renown Health also used data from the Washoe County Health District to identify health care needs and barriers in its service area. Renown Health's Community Benefit Committee spearheads the development of an annual community needs assessment and corresponding community benefit plan, and oversees the tracking and reporting of community benefit activities. The committee oversees the development or updating of a community needs assessment, and from that assessment develops a community benefit plan that prioritizes and identifies community needs that the organization can support with its finite resources. The needs assessment and community benefit plan then go before the Renown Health Board for review and approval on behalf of all Renown organizations. The needs assessment and the community benefit plan are posted to the organization's website at www.renown.org/about-us/community.
Part VI, Line 3:The organization educates patients on assistance eligibility by posting information on its website regarding its financial assistance program and whenever situations indicate that the patient may be unable to pay for services. The organization has a dedicated Patient Financial Assistance department that works with uninsured patients to establish eligibility for a state or local program. For those that do not qualify for a state or local program, they will refer the patient to the organization's charity care process.
Part VI, Line 4:Washoe County is located in the northwest corner of Nevada and has a population of 453,616 as of June 2016 according to the US Census Bureau. According to the US Census Bureau, the population in the Washoe County area is 50.3% male and 49.7% female. A quarter (22.2%) of the population is under the age of 18. 15.1% of the population is 65 and over. Washoe County's population was estimated to have the following breakdown as of 2015: 63.7% Caucasian/White, 2.6% African American/Black, 6.7% Asian/Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, 2.2% American Indian and Alaska Native and 23.9% Hispanic/Latino.The Washoe County median household income was estimated to be $52,870 according to the US Census Bureau. 13.8% of Washoe County residents are under the federal poverty guidelines according to the 2015 SAIPE. Reno-Sparks unemployment currently is estimated to be at 5.9% as of June 2016, reflecting continual improvements.
