DescPrograms and Public Policy - Restoring forest ecosystems, supporting urban forest research and work, advocating for sound national forest policies and funding, promoting science and research, and working with local and community partners are the lynchpins of American Forests' conservation and public policy work. In the last 25 years, our Releaf programs have helped restore forests in all 50 states and 45 countries around the world, planting more than 50 million trees.See Schedule O for continuationDesc

DescCommunications - Beyond supporting the work occurring in the programs and public policy programs, American Forests' communications program focuses on educating its community about the issues, challenges and developments in the forestry world. This goal is accomplished through the daily blog, Loose Leaf; the monthly e-newsletter, Forest Files; and the quarterly magazine, American Forests. In addition, American Forests' National Big Tree program is a prime education effort, promoting more than 750 of America's biggest trees across hundreds of species. Every year, the program receives hundreds of nominations for big trees and uses the publication of its national register of big trees to communicate the important role big trees play in ecosystems across America.Desc

Form And Line ReferenceFormAndLineReferenceDescExplanationExplanationTxt
Part I, Line 2:Global Releaf grant awards are generally reimbursable awards for which we request and receive a project report form before providing payment to grantees. The project report form requests: 1.) A Narrative response to questions on whether and how well the grantee has carried out the proposed grant activities and achieved proposed objectives; and, 2.) Financial and budget information on how the requested grant amounts were expended, as well as information about other funds and support directed to the project; and, 3.) Photos that provide further detail on planting sites. Since 1990, American Forests Global ReLeaf has completed restoration work in all 50 U.S. states and 45 countries around the world, helping to plant more than 50 million trees in areas of crucial need. These projects have restored forest ecosystems for myriad critical issues, including wildlife habitat improvement, responses to wildfire and other threats, water resource protection and carbon offsets benefits. Through local partnerships, American Forests is able to involve individuals, organizations, agencies and corporations in tree planting projects that restore local and global ecosystems. By expanding the area of healthy trees and forests and restoring natural ecosystems, Global ReLeaf tree planting projects provide long-term environmental, economic, and social benefits. Trees prevent soil erosion, clean waterways and absorb harmful greenhouse gases -- including carbon dioxide -- from the atmosphere. Forests also help recharge groundwater and sustain stream flow, provide vital habitat for wildlife, and offer people a multitude of recreational activities. Each planting area is responsibly managed to provide optimal benefits. Global ReLeaf Project Criteria: American Forests thoroughly reviews each application to select planting sites where trees are most needed. An agreement is then made between American Forests and the local planting partners at each site to ensure that native tree species are planted using proper planting methods and that follow-up care and management will be provided. We place emphasis on planting a variety of tree species using the latest, most accurate reforestation and management techniques to recreate a thriving and diverse ecosystem. Global ReLeaf provides cost-share grants for restoration tree-planting projects conducted by nonprofit organizations and public agencies in the U.S. and around the world. These grants are expected to be strongly leveraged with other funds and in-kind resources. Grant funds may be used to support a variety of activities associated with restoration tree planting (e.g. seedling acquisition, site preparation, transportation, equipment and supplies, contractors and volunteer organizing). Proposals must be submitted by non-profit organizations or public agencies that have expertise and experience in conducting tree planting projects. Projects must be conducted on: Public lands designated for long-term conservation purposes. Private lands with credible assurance of long-term conservation uses (e.g. conservation easement), management capacity and public access. Projects should: Be conducted on sites that have been damaged or degraded by natural or human causes (e.g. wildfire, hurricanes, tornadoes, insects and disease, unsustainable logging, land clearing, mineral extraction). Be designed to help restore environmental and societal benefits through restoration tree planting (e.g. water quality and quantity, wildlife habitat, recreational opportunities, non-timber forest products). Plant a diversity of tree species native to the area. Be supervised by individuals with credible expertise in tree planting, care and long-term maintenance. Build local partnerships among multiple public and private organizations. Engage local volunteers in tree planting, long-term tree care and project-monitoring activities. Promote project visibility through educational and media outreach, tours and other events related to the tree-planting project. Demonstrate strong leverage of local support (funding and in-kind) to achieve a greater number of trees planted with the grant funds. Project Applicants should include plans for: 1.) Providing photo images of project sites before and after tree planting. 2.) Collecting data (e.g. survival and growth rates) on tree planting success upon project completion and after one and five years. 3.) Measuring progress toward restoration goals or desired outcomes.
Part I, line 3:Foreign expenses are directly tracked and are accounted for on the accrual method of accounting.

For more than a century, American Forests has been at the forefront of forest policy, meeting with key policymakers and arguing for appropriate plans and levels of funding to support needed work in our nation's forests. Throughout the course of its history, American Forests has grounded its work in the best science of the time, and with the 2011 creation of its science advisory board, American Forests has aligned itself with some of the nation's premiere scientists to continue developing its work in and around the latest science. For decades, American Forests has worked with local partners to help restore and protect forests and has served on many local and regional coalitions and community groups to promote strong local forestry practices and partnerships.
