DescResearch Activities: Scholarly works from VCOM faculty are not only based on funded research, but also on the numerous intramural research projects our faculty pursue. These internal, non-funded projects allow faculty to collect preliminary data for future extramural applications, and offer excellent opportunities for students to learn about research firsthand. These intramural projects cover all areas of research biomedical, clinical, educational and outreach, and the majority of them involve our students as active members of the research team. There are currently over 120 VCOM students involved in projects. Research Summary for Each Campus: Virginia Campus Faculty at VCOMVirginia continue to develop partnerships with research centers and research universities across the nation, and also locally at Virginia Tech, including the Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Science (ICTAS) and Biomedical Engineering group (SBES). The area of greatest collaborative activity is in the newly formed VCOM-Virginia Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine One Health Research Center, which announced its first round of pilot grants last fall. Biomedical faculty members have continued to publish their work in peer-reviewed journals, and many of the publications feature VCOM students as co-authors. Likewise, faculty have been active at conferences and meetings, presenting a large number of posters and presentations. Consistent with the strategic plan to increase extramurally funded research, faculty have submitted many new extramural grant applications. The funding agencies include NIH, National Science Foundation, American Heart Association and Commonwealth Health Research Board and a number of private foundations. Also in response to the Strategic Initiative to stimulate new osteopathic research projects, several new and exciting translational and clinical research projects have been initiated. The faculty at the Virginia campus has over $7,026,160 in currently active multi-year grant awards. Over $11,846,512 in grant proposals have been submitted. Carolinas Campus Carolinas campus researchers have focused on conducting research to establish data to support grant applications to the NIH and research foundations. VCOMs collaborative research programs with the Gibbs Cancer Center and Research Institute has brought about submissions to the NIH for grants. Promising research has been developed in our labs at Converse College in Spartanburg. One exciting aspect of our research is that students have been able to participate in research projects at Gibbs Cancer Center and Research Institute and Converse College. Research opportunities at VCOMCarolinas Campus included community outreach, education, laboratory, and animal investigations. Renovations for a new research facility, known as the Magnolia Research Center has been completed on our campus. Currently, faculty from the Carolinas campus have over $282,837 in active grant awards. Over $458,975 in new research proposals have been submitted. Recent grant awards show the commitment our VCOMCarolinas faculty have in playing their part to achieve the Colleges strategic goal of becoming the one of the top ranked osteopathic medical schools in research. Another milestone this year was VCOMCarolinas first Research Day, which is discussed later. Plans for research seminars which will be open to all faculty and students are planned for later this year. Auburn Campus Research initiatives at VCOMAuburn continue to be in areas where faculty have formed successful partnerships with researchers from outside institutions, such as Auburn University. Orthopedics research, specifically focused on sports medicine and osteopathic medicine, joins VCOM faculty with researchers in Auburn University School of Kinesiology as well as researchers at Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopaedics Center. Other initiatives include medical genetics and primary care medicine, as well as research into how chronic diseases affect rural populations. The Motion Analysis Research Laboratory is a collaborative research initiative with the Jack Hughston Foundation. VCOM will help to facilitate motion analysis research, which will involve collaborations with Hughston Clinic Orthopaedic faculty and residents. This initiative will bring together partners within Auburn University such as engineering, veterinary medicine and kinesiology. The VCOMAuburn research program is expanding, and faculty at this campus have been actively engaged in submitting extramural applications to federal agencies and research foundations. Seven different faculty, in both the clinical and biomedical disciplines, have submitted proposals as principal investigators. In the first year that the research program at VCOMAuburn has been active, the faculty at the college have current active grant awards of over $129,285, and over $708,565 in grant proposals have been submitted. Research Partnerships VMCVM/VCOM Center for One Health Research. The connection between human and animal health and the environment is not a new concept, and the health of each group is only becoming more interconnected as our population grows. The One Health initiative is an international movement and a collaborative effort of multiple disciplines. This effort incorporates human medicine, veterinary medicine and environmental science with the goal of improving health for all species and the environment. The Center for One Health Research is a collaborative research venture to promote joint VCOM and Virginia Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine (VMCVM) research programs relevant for humans and animals. The initiative includes VMCVM in Virginia and all three VCOM campuses, as well as joint research projects at VCOM international sites. Center faculty from both institutions will utilize research facilities and infrastructure at locations throughout Virginia Tech, VCOM and our international sites for a wide variety of educational, clinical and biomedical research programs conducted collaboratively within the Center. Another major feature of the Center is the central involvement of VCOM and VMCVM students in collaborative disease prevention, public health and global health research projects. Thus, a funding mechanism has been established in order to initiate and help sustain collaborations between VMCVM and VCOM researchers. Innovation and Intellectual Property. The research department at VCOM assists researchers to protect and promote intellectual property through the patent process and to work in collaboration with outside partners to develop the marketing potential of products and ideas. Motion Analysis Research Laboratory This is a collaborative research initiative with the Jack Hughston Foundation. VCOM which will help to facilitate motion analysis research collaborations with Hughston Clinic Orthopaedic faculty and residents. In addition, this initiative will bring together partners within Auburn University such as engineering, veterinary medicine, and kinesiology. The partnership will also extend to Andrews Orthopaedic Education and Research Foundation. The initiative will address pre- and post-operative management, including optimization of rehabilitation to reduce pain and decrease recovery time. The application of basic principles of osteopathic medicine will be incorporated to research protocols and clinical applications. VCOMAuburn has recently added a biomechanics engineer to its faculty to direct the Rehabilitation and Biomechanics Laboratory. First Research Day at the Carolinas Campus On April 1, 2016, VCOMCarolinas hosted its first Research Day event. Coordination of this event on a second campus was inspired by the success of the VCOMVirginia Via Research Recognition Day, in which a number of Carolinas faculty and students have participated. Research Day was a great success, thanks to the efforts of those who helped to coordinate, and all of the participants. For the event, VCOM welcomed two honored guest speakers, Timothy J. Yeatman, MD, FACS, director and president of the Gibbs Cancer Center and Research Institute and founding president and CSO of the Guardian Research Network, and Thomas Geisbert, PhD, professor of microbiology and immunology at the University of Texas Medical Branch. Dr. Yeatman gave a presentation titled "Sequencing Identifies New Biology of Colorectal Cancer,Dr. Geisbert presented on "Meeting the Ebola Challenge Vaccines and Treatments". VCOM students and faculty from the Virginia and Carolinas campuses, as well as researchers from the local community, spent the day sharing their studies and findings with other participants. The campus buzzed with the energy of the scientists who help to further the college mission, serving those most in need and promoting research activities to improve human health. Among the first trips were assistance with the tsunami victims in India and global health outreach trips to El Salvador and to Africa. VCOM believes that in order to address the health issues in these developing countries, a sustained presence is required to address determinants of health. VCOM began to collaborate with the medical schools in each country the college serves, then established year-round, sustainable, primary care clinics with public health outreach programs, and assured approvals from the ministry of health in each country. Establishing this collaborative foundation allowed VCOM to focus on health related work and address the many public health, community health, and social determinants of poor health, as well as treat immediate patient needs. By 2007, VCOM had established sustainable clinics in Honduras, El Salvador, and the Dominican Republic. Interested VCOM first and second year students may participate in one week international outreach trips. Third year students can participate in month long experiences with the sustainable clinics, and students in the dual degree tracks may spend up to one year working in the international setting. Medical outreach trips are opportunities for students to nurture their commitment to serve those who have fewer resources and to strengthen their compassion and cultural competency through patient care. The outreach trips and rotations provide students with hands-on, problem-based, learning experiences in a real world setting, where they develop skills that cannot be learned in the classroom. While VCOM facilitates both local and international outreach trips for the first and second year medical students, the college also provides immediate assistance after certain global emergencies such as floods, tornados, or hurricanes. In the Dominican Republic, VCOM provides a sustainable primary care clinic in Vern, a community of greater than 60,000. In 2005, prior to VCOM and the Punta Cana Foundation committing to this project, Vern was a community of 3,800 where no healthcare existed for the uninsured until you reached Higuey, a drive of about 50 minutes. Even in Higuey, the city was medically underserved and patients waited days for care. VCOM and Punta Cana Foundation committed the resources required to remodel an abandoned community health clinic and partnered with the Dominican government to provide clinical services. Today the clinic provides care for patients with HIV and TB, education on water purification, immunizations, primary care, pediatrics, prenatal care, and emergency services for some of the regions poorest and uninsured patients. The college has trained local volunteers to operate an ambulance donated by Punta Cana Foundation so patients may be transported to the hospital in Higuey. Also, the college conducts one week outreach trips to neighboring communities without healthcare, encouraging these patients to follow up with visits to the Vern Clinic. Other partners at this clinic include Punta Cana Ecological Foundation, the Appalachian College of Pharmacy, INTEC and UCE. In addition, a new pediatric center is being constructed to serve patients from Vern and Bavarro. The clinic is funded by the Oscar de la Renta Foundation, in collaboration with the Punta Cana Foundation, and will feature state of the art facility and equipment. In fiscal year ending June 30, 2016, VCOM supported three mission trips to this clinic involving 75 medical students, whom under the supervisor of 38 clinical faculty, physician volunteers, and clinic employees, assisted treating over 2025 patients. El Salvador is the first country where VCOM faculty and students provided care internationally. Today, VCOM helps to support resources for the Shalom Family Medical Center, a clinic and orphanage sponsored by Asociacion Amigos para Lationamerica (AMILAT) in Santa Toms, just outside of San Salvador, and to provide weekly care to two additional orphanages and to the mountain communities of Chalatenango and Sonsonate. Many would be without medical care if VCOM did not sponsor these VCOMs weekly clinics. Community and patient education on water contamination and proper water sanitation practices were provided to heads of household. Also, research on water quality and access, along with sanitation and related health risks based on World Health Organization (WHO) standards was conducted. Partners for this clinic include AMILAT, UEEC, the Ministry of Health, Presbyterian College of Pharmacy, and Decameron Resort. In fiscal year ending June 30, 2016, VCOM supported five mission trips to this clinic involving 75 medical students, 18 students in the Graduate Certificate PrDesc

ExplanationThe College, APCA, ViaStar and VC Medical Endowment Trust have analyzed filing positions in all of the federal and state jurisdictions where they are required to file income tax returns, including the College and VCMET's statuses as a tax-exempt entities. The only periods subject to examination for federal and state tax returns are for taxable years ended June 30, 2013 through June 30, 2016. The College, APCA, ViaStar and VC Medical Endowment Trust believe their income tax filing positions, including the College and VCMET's status as a tax-exempt entities, will be sustained on audit and do not anticipate any adjustments that will result in a material change to their financial position. Therefore, no reserves for uncertain tax positions, nor interest and penalties, have been recorded in these consolidated financial statements.ExplanationTxt
