DescEducation FY17 SummaryThe Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art offered a great spectrum of programs that engaged and inspired audiences to connect with the museum's collections and special exhibitions. During this fiscal year, education activity and programs drew over 39% of the Museum's annual attendance of just over 95,000 and involved numerous partners. Adult programs investigated major exhibitions The Wagstaff Collection of Photographs, Utamaro and the Lure of Japan, and John Trumbull: Visualizing American Independence, exploring history through art historical, visual, and cultural lenses. Around 19,000 students, teachers, families and adults participated in 1,714 guided tours with the museum's 92 docents. The monthly free Second Saturdays for Families program has now attracted over 45,000 visitors since it was conceived in 2009 as a means of encouraging active intergenerational learning in a museum setting. In the School and Teacher Programs area, new student touring options were developed this year to integrate a gallery program and studio experience for students in grades K-12. These studio programs attracted record attendance of about 2,000 students. New funding from United Healthcare supported programming for Community Days this year, two of which are held in collaboration with The Amistad Center for Art & Culture. Other signature programs conceived within the Community Engagement Initiative like Museum on the Move, Art and Writing, the Community Arts Program, and Summer Community Studio are expanding through new curricula and infrastructure.Visitors continue to take advantage of the mobile tour option at tap.thewadsworth.org, loaded with in-depth analyses of single works of art by scholars, curators, and educators on the permanent collections and major special exhibitions. Department staffing shifted to embrace a developing academic audience as the University of Connecticut's Hartford campus opened and the Hartford Consortium for Higher Education grew more active. Several initiatives are already underway including a new program called the Encounters series held in collaboration with the Hartford Public Library and the UCONN Humanities Institute. The already established Internship Program placed 25 Interns from 16 universities in departments throughout the museum to mentor with professional staff, developing their understanding of the various fields represented in the museum setting.Desc

Form And Line ReferenceFormAndLineReferenceDescExplanationExplanationTxt
Part II, Line 9:The Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art reflects expenditures relating to its easements in its operating revenue and expenditures.
Part III, Line 1a:Collections of works of art acquired through purchase or donation since the Museum's inception are not recognized as assets in the accompanying statement of financial position. Each of the items is cataloged, preserved and cared for. Purchases of collection items are recorded as decreases in unrestricted net assets in the year in which the items are acquired or as decreases in temporarily restricted net assets, if the assets used to purchase the items are restricted by donors. Proceeds from deaccessions or insurance recoveries are reflected as increases in the temporarily restricted net asset class. Museum policy limits the use of proceeds from deaccessions or insurance solely for acquisition of other art objects.
Part III, Line 4:The Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art houses a collection of nearly 50,000 works of art including paintings, sculptures, decorative arts, works on paper, costumes and textiles, and videos, ranging in date from antiquity to contemporary and including works from most of the continents. The Wadsworth Atheneum is one of Connecticut's principal cultural and civic institutions and a museum of international significance. The museum is a not-for-profit organization that ensures the public has access to artwork that is artistically and historically signficant. In addition to permanent collection displays, the Atheneum presents special exhibitions of loaned works. A wide range of interpretive and educational programs for children, families, and adults, public and school tours are offered regularly.
Part V, Line 4:The organization's endowment funds are used for museum operations, exhibitions, and programming as well as the acquisition of works of art.
Part X, Line 2:The Museum has no unrecognized tax benefits at June 30, 2017. The Museum's U.S. Federal and state information returns prior to fiscal year 2014 are closed and management continually evaluates expiring statutes of limitations, audits, proposed settlements, changes in tax law and new authoritative rulings. If the Museum were to incur unrelated business income taxes, it would recognize interest and penalties associated with any tax matters as part of the income tax provision and include accrued interest and penalties with the related tax liability in the statement of financial position.
Part XI, Line 2d - Other Adjustments:Change value of investments held in trust by others 369,594.
