Desc(1) Self-guided and guided tours by individuals, families, school classrooms and groups impact the greatest number of people. The effect of the $27.5 million renovation of the Lorraine exhibits and facility with courtyard exhibits revealed April 2014 continues to grow the museum audience. Compared to pre-renovation statistics, the audience is up 44%. FY 2017 continued with record breaking annual number of visitors 288,842 plus 21,520 participating in programs for a grand total of 310,362. (2)The foundation of the museum from which all programs flow is the comprehensive history of the American civil rights movement chronicled in permanent interactive exhibit format that is built around the historic site of the Lorraine Motel. The expanded mission statement captures this with the addition of examining today's global civil and human rights issues, provoking thoughtful debate and serving as a catalyst for positive social change - demonstrating the relevance of the history. Quarterly changing exhibits with related programming add to the robust schedule of mission driven programs. (3)Future sustainability of the museum programs and its 4.5 acre campus and 3 buildings is now protected with the creation of an endowment fund (2015) seeded by a challenge grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities and further expanded by new institutional focus. (4)An internationally acclaimed cultural institution, the Museum was recognized as USA Today's Top 10 Best American Iconic Attractions; Top 10 Best Historical Spots in the U.S. by TLC's Family Travel; Must See by the Age of 15 by Budget Travel and Kids; Top 10, American Treasures by USA Today and Best Memphis Attraction by The Commercial Appeal. (5)Distinguished partnerships and accreditations: Affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, American Alliance of Museums accreditation places the National Civil Rights Museum among the top 5% of museums in the U.S., International Coalition of Sites of Conscience. (6) The 2nd annual Night at the Lorraine fundraising event held all on the museum campus, June 10, 2017, with almost 800 individual patrons many of whom are Millennials and are new to the museum - 48%. The event generated a net of over $99,000. (7) The 2nd annual Ruby Bridges Reading Festival featured host, Ruby Bridges targeting Pre-K through elementary school students and their families - 1,500 attended this free event and book giveaway. (8) With the approaching 50th anniversary of Dr. King's assassination on April 4, 2018, the museum launched a yearlong commemoration, MLK50 in 2017. The theme, Where Do We Go From Here?, taken from the title of his last book, honors Dr. King's legacy and most importantly looks forward with a broad spectrum of programming - Youth Convening, Poetry Slam & Symposium, Joint Symposium with the University of Memphis School of Law, Evening of Storytelling with civil rights icons and today's movement leaders, and the Remembrance Commemoration. Fundraising is designed to cover the expenses for the 12 month period.Desc

Form And Line ReferenceFormAndLineReferenceDescExplanationExplanationTxt
Part III, Line 1a:The Museum has collections comprised of objects, documents, textiles, photographs, and artwork which illustrate and highlight the key episodes of the Movement and its legacy to inspire participation in civil and human rights efforts on a global level. At its founding in 1991, the Museum was not a collecting institution but since then, through a steady process of acquiring gifts, bequests, and purchases, the Museum's collection now has approximately 2,000 items. While the primary scope of the collection is focused on the civil rights struggle during the 1950s and 1960s, the artifacts, oral histories, films, and interactive media, guide visitors through five centuries of American history spanning from slavery through the passing of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. The permanent collection also comprises of the court documents in the criminal case against James Earl Ray, the alleged assassin of Dr. King. In addition the Museum has an education collection and an institutional history collection. The education collection contains artifacts used as teaching tools for hands-on learning in programs and workshops. Each of the items is cataloged, preserved, and cared for, and activities verifying their existence and assessing their condition are performed continuously. The collections are subject to a policy that requires proceeds from their sales to be used to acquire other items for collection. Collection items acquired either through purchase or donation are not capitalized. Purchases of collection items are recorded as decreases in unrestricted net assets if purchased with unrestricted assets and as decreases in temporarily restricted net assets if purchased with donor-restricted assets. Contributions of collection items are not recognized in the statements of activities. Proceeds from insurance recoveries are reflected as increases in the appropriate net asset classes. During the year ended June 30, 2017, a collection of photographs depicting the Movement with a fair value of $1,900,000 was donated to the Foundation. The contribution of the photographs is not reflected in the accompanying financial statements since the Foundation does not capitalize collections.
Part V, Line 4:the endowment fund is set up to manage endowment gifts and to distribute the income to the museum for general operations and programs to promote the mission of the museum. THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND STAFF ADOPTED A SPENDING POLICY EFFECTIVE 7/1/2016 WITH RESPECT TO THE APPROPRIATION OF THE RETURNS FROM THESE ASSETS FOR EXPENDITURE.
Part X, Line 2:THE INTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE HAS DETERMINED THAT THE FOUNDATION IS EXEMPT FROM FEDERAL INCOME TAX UNDER SECTION 501(C)(3) OF THE INTERNAL REVENUE CODE (THE "CODE") AND IS NOT A PRIVATE FOUNDATION AS DEFINED IN SECTION 509(A) OF THE CODE. ACCORDINGLY, THE INDIVIDUAL DONORS ARE ENTITLED TO THE MAXIMUM CHARITABLE DEDUCTION UNDER SECTION 170(C) OF THE CODE. AS A TAX-EXEMPT ORGANIZATION, THE FOUNDATION IS REQUIRED TO OPERATE UNDER THE PROVISIONS OF THE CODE IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN SUCH TAX-EXEMPT STATUS. THE FOUNDATION IS ALSO EXEMPT FROM STATE INCOME TAX. THE FOUNDATION FOLLOWS THE GUIDANCE CONTAINED IN ASC TOPIC 740-10-25, ACCOUNTING FOR UNCERTAINTY IN INCOME TAXES. ASC TOPIC 740-10-25 PRESCRIBES A RECOGNITION THRESHOLD AND MEASUREMENT ATTRIBUTE FOR FINANCIAL STATEMENT RECOGNITION AND MEASUREMENT OF A TAX POSITION TAKEN OR EXPECTED TO BE TAKEN. BASED UPON ITS EVALUATION, THE FOUNDATION CONCLUDED THAT THERE ARE NO SIGNIFICANT UNCERTAIN TAX POSITIONS REQUIRING RECOGNITION IN ITS FINANCIAL STATEMENTS.
