Desc(COMPANION ANIMALS) HSI's Spay/Neuter clinics in Latin America performed surgery on over 8,000 dogs and over 3,200 cats. HSI's dog management and mass vaccination programs across India, Bhutan, the Philippines, Bangladesh and Nepal have resulted in sterilizing over 12,000 dogs and vaccinating over 33,000 dogs through eight projects in India (both long- and short-term) and one project in each of the other countries. HSI has permanently closed nine dog meat farms in South Korea since 2014, and has rescued and rehomed over 1,000 dogs from these farms. South Korean President Moon adopted a rescue dog from the meat trade. A campaign to end the dog meat trade has now been launched in Indonesia. Working with partners in Canada and the United Kingdom, rescued dogs are receiving all the care and individual attention they require and made available for adoption. And finally, HSI responds to disasters around the world by providing rescue efforts, medical equipment/supplies and food. HSI/Mexico assisted more than 6,200 animals that were impacted by the earthquakes in Mexico, and provided 14 tons of animal food. HSI participated in disaster relief efforts during and after: Hurricane Harvey, in Texas. HSI lead disaster relief efforts during and after: Hurricane Irma, Hurricane Maria, and Hurricane Nate.Desc

Desc(WILDLIFE) HSI wildlife programs cover a wide range of issues from campaigning against the commercial killing of wildlife (Canadian seals, sharks, turtle, whales, rhinos, elephants, trophy hunted species) to ending trade in wildlife and wildlife parts to resolving human-wildlife conflict in a humane manner (e.g. elephants in southern Africa, badgers and rodents in the UK). HSI worked with our partner group, The Jane Goodall Institute China, and other Chinese advocates on a No Ivory campaign, urging the public to reject ivory consumption. We also engaged with government stakeholders to press for the ban. And on December 31st, all registered ivory carving facilities, ivory wholesalers and ivory retailers in China closed, thus ending the world's largest domestic ivory market. HSI worked closely with the Environmental Investigation Agency to urge Rakuten, the largest Japanese online retailer to ban all sales of ivory via their online marketplace. Working with enforcement agencies in India, HSI assisted in seizing four pieces of ivory, over 20 kilograms of deer antlers and over a kilogram of pangolin scales from illegal trade. Lions, leopards, giraffes, chimpanzees, sharks and other key species have received overwhelming support for critical international treaty level protections at the 12th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention for the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals, this year's largest and most important conservation meeting. HSI's direct involvement included coordinating with and advising government representatives in the listing efforts. In Vietnam, HSI reached over 6,000 high school students in fun and educational events as part of a continuing campaign to reduce demand for rhino horn.Desc

$1,364,553$288,332$0(CONFRONTING CRUELTY) HSI/Canada was heavily involved in getting the government of British Columbia (BC) to prohibit all trophy hunting of grizzlies throughout BC and all hunting of grizzlies within the Great Bear Rainforest. HSI/Canada has been working towards this goal for over a decade. The World Trade Organization (WTO) ruled in favor of the United States on dolphin-safe tuna labels. This victory will help protect dolphins and means that all tuna sold in the United States under the dolphin-safe label will come from fishing fleets that do not chase down and set nets on dolphins as a way of catching the schools of tuna that swim beneath the dolphins. This was one of the longest-running global fights for animal welfare, which had stretched on for almost 30 years. HSI efforts included long-running congressional, judicial, and international trade actions. The raccoon dog was included in the first update of the list of Invasive Alien Species of Union Concern. Inclusion on the list prohibits the trade in the species as an exotic pet and creates extra bureaucracy and costs for fur farmers if they continue to exploit the species. HSI/Europe's lobby campaign helped lead to this victory. India banned the import of reptile skins and fur in a landmark decision that will spare the lives of tens of thousands of animals from the cruel exotic leather industries. Specifically, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade banned the import of skins of reptiles, mink, fox, and chinchilla. Mexico banned dogfighting nationwide. In addition, Mexico adopted felony-level penalties for dogfighting by reforming the Federal Criminal Code to penalize dogfighting and the activities surrounding it. HSI/Mexico was involved in all aspects of this legislation. Further, Mexico updated their Constitution to recognize animals as sentient beings whose welfare must be protected. In Guatemala, important animal cruelty legislation was approved and passed by Congress. The legislation includes: a dog fighting ban, education on animal welfare in the public school system, prohibition on tail and ear docking, and a ban on cosmetic testing on animals. The law further stipulates the creation of an Animal Welfare Unit within the Ministry of Agriculture, the first-ever government entity in Central America established to deal specifically with animal cruelty. The National Academy of Legal Studies and Research (NALSAR) University of Law established India's first Centre for Animal Law. HSI/India will work closely with NALSAR University to steer and coordinate the activities of the Centre. The Parliament of the Balearic Islands voted in favor of legislative measures to prohibit bullfights or bull fiestas in this Spanish autonomous community. HSI/Europe's involvement included action alerts, petitions, and a press release.
$1,120,816$213,522$0(ANIMAL TESTING) In a key step forward for animals, the Canadian Senate Standing Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology unanimously voted in favor of S-214, the Cruelty Free Cosmetics Act. The proposed legislation will now move to debate and to a final vote in the Canadian Senate. If the bill passes this stage, it will proceed to the House of Commons. HSI negotiated with the Brazilian Food and Drug Association regarding pesticide regulatory reforms that will make the use of animal testing alternatives a legal requirement going forward. HSI successfully blocked multiple animal testing proposals from moving forward through HSI's seat on the European Chemicals Agency Member State Committee.

Schedule D, Part X, Line 2 FIN 48 (ASC 740) footnoteTHE FOLLOWING FOOTNOTE IS FROM THE AUDITED CONSOLIDATED FINANCIAL STATEMENTS OF THE HUMANE SOCIETY OF THE UNITED STATES AND AFFILIATES (THE SOCIETY): HSUS (THE HUMANE SOCIETY OF THE UNITED STATES), FFA (FUND FOR ANIMALS), HSI, HSVMA (HUMANE SOCIETY VETERINARY MEDICAL ASSOCIATION), SFWC (SOUTH FLORIDA WILDLIFE CENTER), HSWLT (HUMANE SOCIETY WILDLIFE LAND TRUST), AND PC (PROJECT CHIMPS) QUALIFY UNDER SECTION 501(C)(3) OF THE INTERNAL REVENUE CODE (IRC) AND ARE CLASSIFIED AS ORGANIZATIONS THAT ARE NOT PRIVATE FOUNDATIONS. DDAL (DORIS DAY ANIMAL LEAGUE) QUALIFIES UNDER SECTION 501(C)(4) OF THE IRC. THEREFORE, THE SOCIETY IS GENERALLY NOT SUBJECT TO TAX UNDER PRESENT INCOME TAX LAWS; HOWEVER, ANY UNRELATED BUSINESS INCOME MAY BE SUBJECT TO FEDERAL AND STATE INCOME TAXES. For the year ended December 31, 2017, the Society earned $441,189 of unrelated business income from magazine and website advertising. IN ACCORDANCE WITH FASB ASC 740 INCOME TAXES, THE SOCIETY RECOGNIZES TAX LIABILITIES FOR UNCERTAIN TAX POSITIONS WHEN IT IS MORE LIKELY THAN NOT THAT A TAX POSITION WILL NOT BE SUSTAINED UPON EXAMINATION AND SETTLEMENT WITH VARIOUS TAXING AUTHORITIES. LIABILITIES FOR UNCERTAIN TAX POSITIONS ARE MEASURED BASED UPON THE LARGEST AMOUNT OF BENEFIT THAT IS GREATER THAN 50% LIKELY OF BEING REALIZED UPON SETTLEMENT. THE GUIDANCE ON ACCOUNTING FOR UNCERTAINTY IN INCOME TAXES ALSO ADDRESSES DE-RECOGNITION, CLASSIFICATION, INTEREST AND PENALTIES ON INCOME TAXES, AND ACCOUNTING IN INTERIM PERIODS. WITH A FEW EXCEPTIONS, THE SOCIETY IS NO LONGER SUBJECT TO INCOME TAX EXAMINATIONS BY THE U.S. FEDERAL, STATE OR LOCAL TAX AUTHORITIES FOR YEARS ENDED DECEMBER 31, 2014 AND PRIOR. MANAGEMENT HAS EVALUATED THE SOCIETY'S TAX POSITIONS AND HAS CONCLUDED THAT THE SOCIETY HAS TAKEN NO UNCERTAIN TAX POSITIONS THAT REQUIRE ADJUSTMENT TO THE CONSOLIDATED FINANCIAL STATEMENTS TO COMPLY WITH THE PROVISIONS OF THIS GUIDANCE.

Form 990, Part I, Line 1 BRIEF MISSIONAsia, Latin America, the Caribbean and the Pacific islands. HSI also seeks to end the dog-meat trade in Asia. HSI seeks an end to animal testing for cosmetics and other chemicals by 2025 through our "Be Cruelty Free" campaign and seeks to end the use of animals in biomedical research that causes them harm by 2050. HSI campaigns against farm animal suffering and seeks to end the use of close confinement for pigs and laying hens, end the financing of intensive production systems and reduce meat consumption globally. HSI campaigns against wildlife abuse and suffering with specific actions to end the commercial killing of seals for fur, to end commercial whaling, to end shark finning, to end trophy hunting and to promote humane approaches to resolving human-wildlife conflict issues.
Form 990, Part III, Line 4d Description of other program services(Expenses $ 1,364,553 including grants of $ 288,332)(Revenue $ 0) (CONFRONTING CRUELTY) HSI/Canada was heavily involved in getting the government of British Columbia (BC) to prohibit all trophy hunting of grizzlies throughout BC and all hunting of grizzlies within the Great Bear Rainforest.
Form 990, Part III, Line 4d Description of other program services(Expenses $ 1,120,816 including grants of $ 213,522)(Revenue $ 0) (ANIMAL TESTING) In a key step forward for animals, the Canadian Senate Standing Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology unanimously voted in favor of S-214, the Cruelty Free Cosmetics Act.
