NFG developed a partnership with the Common Counsel Foundation to host a pooled fund managed by NFG staff. In December 2017, NFG announced the Amplify Fund, which will help actualize the learning and strategy development work of the DDP by creating a vehicle for funders to participate in shared grantmaking. The Amplify Fund will implement a grantmaking strategy to support community power building in sites across the country over four years. To date, NFG has raised $9.625M to support Amplify's grantmaking, with a goal of raising a total of $17M.Desc

DescFunders for a Just Economy (FJE). In 2017, with new staff and member leadership, NFG's oldest working group, Funders for a Just Economy (FJE), grew its programming considerably. FJE organizes programming and activities where funders connect with one another to learn more about how to advance economic justice through supporting grassroots campaigns and organizations. Over 40 funders and nearly 20 field leaders attended FJE's May 2017 Policy Briefing, titled "The Road Ahead for Worker Justice: Where to Lean In, Pull Up, Push Back, and Pivot." Economic justice leaders shared their expertise and perspectives on the future of work and policy challenges and opportunities to advance workers' rights. Panelists and funders discussed new strategies to protect workers as employment arrangements, schedules, policies against collective bargaining, and other worker issues have led to precarious working conditions for many low-wage workers across the US.In early 2017, FJE began its "Working at the Intersections" project, which seeks to organize funders to address economic discrimination based on race, gender, and migration status. Also in 2017, FJE initiated its "Future of Work" project, in which it will map the landscape of current funding for strategies related to addressing the changing nature of work, identify opportunities for funders to align strategies, and prioritize FJE-sponsored learning opportunities for funders. In October 2017, FJE helped launch a new report, "New Southern Strategies: Employment, Workers' Rights and the Prospects for Regional Resurgence" which assesses economic indicators affecting the quality of life in the South and examines corporate strategies that are driving these changes. It presents some of the efforts underway in the region to improve the quality of economic opportunity through labor organizing and strengthening workers' rights, focusing on the southern states of Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. The report also described new models for worker organizing in the face of significant challenges to collective bargaining, new worker scheduling arrangements and other ways that the changing nature of work is impacting low-wage workers. From November 6-8, 2017 FJE hosted a Learning Tour in Alabama, co-sponsored by National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy and Grantmakers for Southern Progress. Over a dozen funders from across the U.S. gathered to meet with local and regional funders, community organizations, unions and worker centers to experience, appreciate and learn about the movement building strategies workers and communities are implementing to advocate for economic justice. Many sessions of the Alabama Learning Tour were live streamed over NFG's social media platforms, and our communications consultants are producing a mini-site that will feature multi-media reports, commentary, and stories of impact from the Learning Tour.Desc

$278,005Funders for Justice (FFJ). Founded in 2014, FFJ is a dynamic organizing space for grantmakers, funder collaboratives, donor networks, and affinity groups to connect with each other and with the movement for racial justice and police accountability across the country. In 2017, FFJ's network grew to over 450 individuals who learn about organizations in the field, connect with funder peers, and find thought leadership and other resources to help them integrate a social change lens to their grantmaking and funder organizing. On June 8, 2017 FFJ held its second national convening in New York City: Decriminalization and Community-Led Safety and Justice Models in Communities of Color. About 130 people attended, primarily funders, including many who were new to FFJ. The convening featured a dynamic program of panels and small group breakout sessions in which funders and field leaders alike discussed their visions for community safety and ways in which philanthropy can meet the urgent needs of the moment. Funders participating in FFJ have collectively committed over $25 million in grant dollars and donor organizing for racial justice and police accountability work since 2015. At FFJ's June 2017 convening, participating funders specifically made commitments of $10.4M. And since FFJ began, donors have pledged over $1.6 million through the fundersforjustice.org web site.In 2017 FFJ also launched an Advisors program a cohort of nine field leaders who will serve as a speakers bureau of thought leaders and writers, and provide guidance on FFJ's invest/divest campaign strategy.
