| Desc | 1) Training projects through the Flying Eye Hospital, local partner institutions, and our telemedicine platform, Cybersight: With donor support and the help of our Volunteer Faculty, we provided training to all types of health care professionals, from doctors to community health workers in 2017. These trainings were delivered in partnership with local hospitals, agencies and governments on board our Flying Eye Hospital, through our online mentoring platform, Cybersight, and through our long-term country programs. Each training was tailored to the regions needs as part of a long-term eye health strategy. In total, 60,381 trainings were completed by doctors, nurses and other eye care workers in 2017. This is a 55 percent increase from 2016. 2) Trachoma elimination work in Ethiopia: In a country where trachoma is the second-leading cause of blindness after cataract, Orbis worked to further eliminate trachoma across targeted Ethiopian zones through training, SAFE strategy, capacity building and providing more access to eye health services. Our work has contributed to the elimination of trachoma in 17 districts. In 2017, Orbis started an operational research to address the quality of trachomatous trichiasis surgical services, conducted trachoma impact surveys, supported eye health strategic plan development for the Amhara regional health bureau and Menelik II hospital, and led the national cataract backlog clearance initiative. By the end of the year, Orbis trained 17,276 nurses, teachers and others, and conducted 609,530 screenings and examinations, 7,389,624 medical/optical treatments, and 34,603 surgeries/laser treatments in Ethiopia. 3) Pediatric eye screening through REACH: India is home to 270,000 blind children, the largest group in any one country. However, sight could be restored with early intervention and comprehensive treatment in over 50 percent of cases. Thats why Orbis conducted eight REACH projects across India in 2017 where efforts to reduce visual impairment included training local workers on screening and eye health, providing equipment, developing outreach plans for screenings, and developing educational material on eye health for dissemination. By the end of 2017, 26,955 nurses and other workers were trained, and 2,007,437 screenings/examinations and 85,084 medical/optical treatments were conducted. | Desc |
