Treatment for trauma is at the heart of many of the Clinic's interventions. This approach builds on family strengths, embraces cultural diversity, and empowers parents through skills development and education. Many of the Clinic's children receiving services are referred by the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) through Specialized Foster Care or Family Preservation programs. In addition, in a longstanding partnership with the Los Angeles Unified School District, the Clinic also provides on-site mental health services at 22 local schools - including high schools, middle and elementary schools.Desc

$763,811Innovation ISM:"Mente Cuerpo, y Corazon" is an innovative partnership of mental health services provided onsite at South Central Family Health Center (SCFHC) that integrate mental health and primary health care services. The Clinic's ISM team works closely with physicians and nurses to facilitate mental health assessments, individual and group therapy, psychiatric services and targeted case management services available in Spanish and English to low-income residents including the uninsured. Weekly platicas or workshops are provided that focus on such topics as self-esteem, communication, depression, anxiety and domestic violence. The program also offers "non-traditional" supports specific to the Latino community - SUCH AS NUTRITION CLASSES, TENSION RELEASING EXERCISE CLASSES, ART CLASSES AND MORE.
$439,992Wraparound:The Clinic's Wraparound program serves families with a child who has been in or is at risk of high-level residential placement. A nationally recognized model of service delivery, this Department of Children and Family Services initiative is driven by family-designated teams that include professional staff, family members, and other community members. With flexible funding, teams tailor services to do whatever it takes to help a family keep their child in the community. Customized interventions include mental health and other supportive services, as well as activities that support optimal functioning for the youth involved. Parent Partners provide primary support, working with parents and caregivers to build on family strengths to create a better future for their child.
$853,023Special Purpose Funds:The Clinic has established this fund to accept gifts and grants from the private/philanthropic sector to implement and/or sustain services, which are at the heart of the Clinic's mission to improve access to services and promote early intervention. Services include:Healthy Families America (HFA) Home Visitation ProgramThe Healthy Families America program is a national home visitation model which is present in 39 states. The Clinic has been affiliated with Healthy Family America since 2014 and was recently accredited. Healthy Families America (HFA) embodies an infant mental health approach, with the belief that early, nurturing relationships are the foundation for lifelong, healthy development. The Clinic's HFA program services families that reside in the Broadway-Manchester and Compton areas. Families that are referred to this program are at high risk for engaging in child abuse behaviors due to family stressors and unresolved traumas. The home visitors support the families by providing one-on-one support through home visits, parenting and child development education, and connections to community resources.Access and Wellness CenterThe Access and Wellness Center is a 2-year project that targets youth ages 6-18 years who could benefit from an evidence based practice (EBP) in addressing early signs of trauma. The Wellness Center introduces a screening tool that asses a child's level of exposure to violence and traumatic events. The program offers a seven to ten week series of wellness groups adapted from a nationally recognized model "Cognitive Behavioral Intervention for Trauma in Schools (CBITS)." The Clinic has adapted the CBITS model to its own setting for the two year project. Plans to expand the wellness service are one of the Clinic's long term goals.Family Resource Center (FRC)Modeled on California Family Resource Association guidelines, the Clinic's Family Resource Center provides family-focused, community-based, culturally and linguistically competent assistance aimed at developing self-sufficiency. The FRC is designed to provide highly relational support to help distressed parents navigate child welfare, special education, and mental health services and resources. At the heart of the FRC is the understanding that families struggle to raise children against the backdrop of multiple stressors that can harm healthy development. With parents providing the greatest source of influence on their child's overall development, FRC works directly with them to ensure basic family needs are met.$37,427
$931,320Medication Support:When clinically indicated clients will be referred for a psychiatric evaluation that will include a determination of appropriateness for medication. During the medication evaluation, adult clients, parents/caregivers, and youth as appropriate are informed of medication classification, administration procedures, and potential side effects. Adult clients and youth with co-occurring disorders and their parents/caregivers are also educated about the synergistic effects of combining psychotropic medication with alcohol and/or drugs that place the individual at high risk for increased level of impairment. Prior to prescribing medications, appropriate consents are signed or court authorization is obtained. Medicated clients are initially reviewed face-to-face at least once a month to document response to medication, side effects, compliance and the appropriateness of continued medication.
$185,146Outreach and Mental Health Promotion$4,582,176
$126,057Vocational Education:The Clinic's Vocational Education Program serves adolescents and young adults ages 15-25 who have significant mental health problems, equipping them with essential skills and experiences to transition successfully to independent community life. Employment services, rehabilitation, case management, and medication services are blended to provide a wide range of needed services. The Clinic assists young adults in obtaining positive peer relationships, stable housing, higher education, job opportunities, and access to other community resources. Special weekend and evening recreational and cultural enrichment activities are organized to engage these young adults and expose them to opportunities outside their daily life experiences. The Clinic partners with the State Department of Rehabilitation and the County Department of Mental Health Cooperative Program to provide this life skills training, which is nationally accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).
$886,232Early Intervention Training Institute:The Clinic created the Early Intervention Training Institute as a response to the expanding need for more early childhood mental health training in Los Angeles County. The Early Intervention Training Institute increases the capacity of community-based, educational agencies and other key "gatekeepers" in identifying children at risk for emotional, behavioral or social delays, as well as other challenges. Additionally, the Clinic trains professionals in effective interventions with these children and their families in settings such as mental health agencies, Head Start and day care centers, and child welfare organizations. The program today draws trainees and requests for trainings from throughout Southern California.
