| Desc | Emergency Basic Needs and My First Home: During this fiscal year, Basic Needs served as a safety net for 296 transition age foster youth who lacked the support of a family when emergencies arose and threatened to throw them off track. My First Home connected 129 participants to community volunteers who helped them transform their first apartments into comfortable homes with furnishings donated by the San Diego community. Without this support, youth are much more likely to begin a treacherous downward spiral that leads to poverty, homelessness and despair. Immediate financial assistance with rent money, bus passes, gas cards, interview clothing, vehicle repair, and food helps immunize youth against debilitating stress, unhealthy physical habits and exploitation. | Form 990, Part III, Line 4d: Other Program Services Description | OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: Financial Fitness/Pathways: 132 young people participated in Financial Fitness and completed $56,000 in new savings matches, with a total combined savings of over $160,000 during fiscal year 2017-18. This is in contrast to studies showing that transition age foster youth typically have low financial literacy and very little in savings. An additional 68 youth benefited from Pathways to Financial Power services focused on work readiness; subsequent surveys revealed that 93% of participants said they feel confident in their interview skills and 93% agreed they feel confident they can make their professional goals a reality. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 5: College Bound: The Cities, Counties and Schools Partnership found that 70% of foster youth reported a desire to go to college, while only 10% attend and 1-3% graduate. Youth have a history of trauma, lack financial support and stability, and are not prepared for college due to educational inconsistency as they bounce from placement to placement. For the foster youth that do enter college, they often feel theyre set up for failure as they struggle to meet basic needs for survival while trying to be a student. But Just in Time is changing that. By supporting youth through a holistic approach, were able to achieve outcomes very different from the sobering statistics on former foster youth in our state and nation. According to surveys updated in June 2018, 627 youth have participated in College Bound and nearly 91% have graduated or are still enrolled in school.
