DescCCHAT is a listening and spoken language (LSL) program. It is our belief children with hearing loss can learn to listen and learn to use spoken English. There is a continual emphasis on appropriate amplification and use of residual hearing by all students. The program is dedicated to meeting the educational and developmental needs of children with hearing loss and providing support for their families. Children with hearing loss who acquire LSL skills are able to access the full range of educational, social and vocational choices in life. CCHAT receives tuition from the Local Education Agencies (LEA). Although 100% of students attending the CCHAT Center were supported by their LEA for the 2017-18 program year, a funding gap remained. The funding gap between the cost for services and tuition was met by development income including individual donations, corporate donations, foundation grants and events.CCHAT just completed its 21st year of serving children with hearing loss. What started out in 1996 as a program serving 12 children learning to listen and talk has grown into a regional program providing center-based services to more than 55 children who are deaf or hard of hearing from 22 different school districts and mainstream support services to more than 250 students from eight school districts across five counties annually. Nine students mainstreamed back to their neighborhood school settings for the 2018-19 school year. CCHAT's annual professional conference, held in February 2018, addressed two current topics: unilateral, mild, moderate and fluctuating hearing loss and sensory integration issues in children with hearing loss. Dr. Carol Flexer lead the discussion and provided valuable information on auditory brain development as well as strategies and treatment options for children challenged by these two conditions. CCHAT's Development Director, Licia King, placed 3rd in the Social Venture Partners of Sacramento Fast Pitch event in March 2018. This opportunity generated funding for our program and helped to raise awareness of CCHAT and the LSL communication option available to children with hearing loss. In addition, CCHAT won $43,000 in in-kind marketing services to help us further elevate our program and reach more families in need of our support. http://www.svpsacramento.org/fast-pitch/2018-winners/ Ronda Rufsvold, Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, received her PhD in Deaf and Hard of Hearing from Columbia University. She was recently published in American Annals of the Deaf as the first author of an article discussing the impact of language input on deaf and hard of hearing preschool children who use listening and spoken language. This past year, Ronda and CCHAT Audiologist, Dr. Katie Isbell, shared their expertise and insights at LSL conferences nationwide. Meredith Wright, Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, became CCHAT's most recent LSLS certified staff member. CCHAT welcomed Kara Smith, Development Associate, to our staff. She will assist with events and database maintenance allowing more time for the Development Director to cultivate relationships with individual donors, foundations and companies and grow CCHAT's major gifts program.CCS Approval: CCHAT received approval as a California Children's Services Type C Communications Disorders Center on July 2, 2018. This approval will allow CCHAT to provide services to increasing numbers of children and families and to diversify revenue streams. Newborn Hearing Screening Follow-up Testing and Diagnostic Site: CCHAT continues to provide quality clinical follow-up care to area residents whose newborns did not pass the inpatient Universal Newborn Hearing Screening. Since our CCS approval in early July 2018, we've seen a marked increase in referrals from the Northern California Hearing Coordination Center and local community health centers and hospitals. CCHAT is uniquely positioned to educate families on how to maximize their child's language and speech development while maintaining lifelong hearing health. The Center is committed to reducing the loss to follow-up and serving as a community resource. Availability of Quality Programs/Services for Children With Hearing Loss, birth -3rd Grade:CCHAT's comprehensive network of programs supports children with hearing loss and their families through every step of the Family Journey, from the moment of diagnosis through successful mainstreaming. CCHAT's structured programs capitalize on the natural window for language acquisition. Oberkotter's generous grant supported programs serving our 0-3 population.Additional Services: Bilingual (English/Spanish) speech therapy is provided for Spanish speaking students who don't have English as their home language. CCHAT maintains low student/teacher ratios and classes are taught by certified educators of the deaf and hard of hearing. Audiology Services: CCHAT provides audiology as a related service for students with hearing loss attending our program. Services include hearing evaluation, family counseling regarding hearing loss, fitting of assistive listening devices, and troubleshooting. Currently, we have working relationships with Cochlear Americas, Advanced Bionics, and Med-El cochlear implant companies and are able to provide services for these implants. CCHAT's Audiologist works closely with the educational staff, school districts, families, and local clinics to ensure a continuum of audiological care.Mainstream Support Services: CCHAT's Mainstream Support Program is comprised of two LSLS certified teachers of the deaf and hard of hearing and an educational audiologist. CCHAT LSL experts provide training of teachers, speech therapists and additional school personnel in surrounding school districts on classroom best practices for students with hearing loss and the use of assistive listening technology. CCHAT continues to provide direct and consultative deaf and hard of hearing and educational audiology services to more than 250 students and 500 school district employees in eight school districts across five counties. The demand for these services continues to grow.Desc
