DescGathering The Urban Manufacturing Alliance, in partnership with Bridgeway Capital our local partner organization hosted our 7th National Gathering in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. These Gatherings offer a unique opportunity for community and economic development practitioners to convene and discuss how they can harness manufacturing to improve their cities and towns through place-based approaches. The Gathering theme was Building Coalitions To Create Equitable Manufacturing Ecosystems, which featured the organizing and systems-building strategies that are promoting manufacturing, while creating new economic opportunities for diverse communities. UMA was able to provide some capacity-building on the practice of ecosystem building, featuring our partners at the Kauffman Foundation. There were approximately 220 participants from 18 states across the country, drawing stakeholders from all levels of government including the Mayor of Pittsburgh. Keynote speaker was Jen Guarino of the Industrial Sewing Innovation Ctr in Detroit. SEE SCHEUDLE O FOR CONTINUATIONDesc

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11The President of the Organization reviews the Form 990 before it is filed. The board of directors then reviews and approves the form before it is filed. Any changes or corrections to the draft are returned to the public accountants for final editing before the signature and filing.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15Compensation for the key employees as approved by the board is reflected in the minutes of the board meetings.
Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 18Available to the public upon request.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12cBoard members are provided with the Conflict of Interest policy at the time of board membership. On a yearly basis, all board members complete a conflict of interest questionnaire, reaffirming their understanding of the policy and disclosing the presence or lack thereof of any possible conflicts.
Form 990, Part III, Line 4aProgram Accoumplishments Continuation State of Urban Manufacturing SUM Release Events UMA built a first-of-its kind primary dataset on small-scale manufacturing across six cities, and then highlighted that data, alongside stories and local ecosystem maps in our State of Urban Manufacturing City Snapshots. In 2018, UMA held SUM release events in five cities Detroit, Cincinnati, Milwaukee, Portland, ORE, and Baltimore. The SUM findings elevated the importance of small-scale manufacturing within urban environments and the types of services these businesses are seeking. Key findings include how difficult it can be for practitioners to find and nurture small-scale manufacturers. Many of these businesses do not self-identify as manufacturers and start out as sole-proprietors, sometimes based out of their home. Additionally, it can be challenging for these smaller firms to identify and/or retain a talented workforce. Many of the more established workforce programs are not well-aligned for small-batch producers. There is also a perception gap among young people who are reluctant to explore manufacturing careers. Nevertheless, there are a range of career opportunities associated with the manufacturing sector across all skill levels, including those with a high school education or less. These firms have a strong interest in scaling in their home cities, with a stated desire to grow their facilities and create employment opportunities in their own backyards. Our SUM work was presented at a number of national conferences and highlighted by many of our local and national thought-partners throughout the year.
Form 990, Part III, Line 4aProgram Accoumplishments Continuation Sewn Trades Collective In response to the growing number of industrial sewing projects in our network, UMA convened a Sewn Trades Collective with about a dozen sewn trades practitioners across the nation. We kicked off some surveying of these practitioner groups and strengthened this ecosystem through a combination of in-person and virtual meetings. We also conducted a focus group with 12 Detroit-based textile manufacturers, which we now draw from for our sewn trades research and thought-leadership work. We have worked closely with Detroit-based Industrial Sewing and Innovation Center in Detroit ISAIC to elevate the importance of apprenticeship opportunities and help spur new or expanded programs across the country. Policy Reports UMA teamed up with Local Progress, a network of local elected officials, to release a policy report featuring capital access models that helped manufacturers to access more patient and flexible capital to grow their businesses. Webinars UMA hosted webinars across its Communities of Practice and in partnership with other practitioner groups, including one with Connecticut Economic Development Association on how small-scale manufacturing in urban and peri-urban areas can benefit communities and spark entrepreneurial growth. We provided an overview of manufacturing re-urbanization, and examples of successes and challenges related to land use and real estate, local branding, and workforce development as well as a discussion of how low-income residents and communities of color can fully participate and benefit from the jobs and business activity created.
