DescMusical Performances - See Schedule OIn 2018, Caramoor presented a total of 66 stand-alone musical performances and day-long, multi-set festivals to audience members in venues throughout our campus, including the 1,700-seat Venetian Theater, the 500-seat Spanish Courtyard, the 180-seat Music Room of the historic Rosen House, the Sunken Garden, Tapestry Hedge, Picnic Lawn, and Friends' Field. While maintaining our commitment to the core classical repertoire, including symphonic, opera, and chamber music, we also presented a wide array of other genres, including jazz, American Songbook, and American roots music, as well as programs designed for families with young children. The 73rd annual Summer Music Season, which ran from June 16 to July 29 and included 31 concerts and multi-set day festivals, was the highlight of our musical offerings. Audra McDonald, the record-breaking winner of six Tony Awards, returned to Caramoor along with the Orchestra of St. Luke's to celebrate the American Songbook at the opening of our Summer Season, in a sold-out concert that was broadcast live on Classical 105.9 WQXR and Classical 90.3 FM. The season continued with a broad range of genres. Our 2018 Summer Season finale featured another stunning vocalist, Susan Graham, who performed selections from Handel's Ariodante and Alicnia followed by Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro and La Clemenza di Tito. Her performance, in the Venetian Theater, featured the Orchestra of St. Luke's and conductor Nicholas McGegan. Additional vocalists performing throughout the year included soprano Julia Bullock, singing selections from Schubert and Barber, and Grammy-award winner Angelique Kidjo making her Caramoor debut.Caramoor's presentation of opera included performances by On Site Opera in a production of Mozart's The Secret Gardener, in Caramoor's historic Sunken Garden. Apollo's Fire, a popular and critically acclaimed period-instrument ensemble that specializes in early music, performed works by Handel and Bach. The concert included an educational pre-concert talk with the artists. Another period-instrument ensemble, The Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, made its Caramoor debut in 2018, with conductor Nicholas McGegan leading the group in a performance of Handel's Atalanta, a pastoral opera in three acts. Several quartets appeared at Caramoor during our Summer Season, including The Japser String Quartet (Caramoor's 2009-2011 Ernst Stiefel String Quartet-in-Residence); The Kronos Quartet, and the Brentano Quartet. Caramoor's 2018 Ernst Stiefel String Quartet-in-Residence visited area schools and performed in the Music Room in spring 2018 and premiered a Caramoor commission, Star-Crossed Signals, by Juila Adolphe, during the summer festival. This summer Caramoor held its second annual Chamber Feast in the Venetian Theater, with alumni of its Evnin Rising Stars mentoring program performing works including Mozart's String Quintet in D Major, K. 593.Canadian composer and pianist Marc-Andr Hamelin performed at Caramoor for the first time on July 8 and on July 12 composer and pianist Michael Brown mixed Haydn's light-hearted Fantasia in C Major, H.XVII:4, "Capriccio" with new works by Nikolai Medtner and arrangements of works by Leonard Bernstein and Aaron Copland. The three-time Grammy-winning vocal group Chanticleer made its Caramoor debut in our Spanish Courtyard. The annual "Guitar in the Garden" series this year featured South African guitarist Derek Gripper. The Brooklyn-based and Grammy-nominated orchestral collective The Knights returned to Caramoor for a program that featured steel pan percussionist and composer Andy Akiho performing his Fantasy for Steel Pans and Orchestra; Judd Greenstein's Flute Concerto written for The Knights' flutist Alex Sopp; works by the French masters Ravel and Faure; as well as a selection of dances from On the Town in celebration of Leonard Bernstein's centennial. So Percussion, a quartet of Brooklyn percussionists, made its Caramoor debut this summer with pieces ranging from 20th-century "classics" to contemporary works, including the world premiere of Vijay Iyer's Mallet Quartet, TORQUE. The season also included a free performance of John Luther Adams'Inuksuit, an epic outdoor piece performed by 60 percussionists and other instrumentalists, directed by Doug Perkins.Broadway stars Mikaela Bennett (The Golden Apple), Alysha Umphress (On the Town), Bryce Pinkham (A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder), and Ben Davis (Violet) gathered at Caramoor to celebrate Leonard Bernstein's 100th birthday. Tony-Award winner Ted Sperling was music director and host for an evening of songs from Bernstein's musicals, including West Side Story, Candide, Wonderful Town, Peter Pan, and more.Caramoor's partnership with Jazz at Lincoln Center resulted in a daylong festival during the summer season that featured Dianne Reeves as the headline act. Other jazz concerts included Camille Thurman with the Darrell Green Trio, the Joey Alexander Trio, and more. Singer-songwriter Aimee Mann headlined our eighth annual American Roots Music Festival. Other performers in the daylong event included Valerie June, The Alexis P. Suter Band, Amythyst Kiah, and more. Additional Roots concerts in 2018 included performances by Americana supergroup I'm With Her, Molsky's Mountain Drifters, Sierra Hull and Friends, and Acoustic Hot Tuna. The Dancing at Dusk family series introduces children and their families to global musical traditions in an informal and welcoming manner. Concert-goers picnic, dance to live music, engage in related craft activities, and interact with the musicians. In 2018 the series included music from Brazil, China, and India. Other family concerts included the orchestral collective The Knights and steel pan virtuoso Andy Akiho. In "Bridge to Broadway," soprano Natalie Bergeron, baritone Steven Herring, pianist Beata Moon, and host Katie Kresek, the Artistic Director of Caramoor's Family Music Programs, explored the music of Schubert, Verdi, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Leonard Bernstein, and more. Our annual Independence Day celebration with an all-pops featured the Westchester Symphonic Winds, conducted by Curt Ebersole, with soprano Meredith Lustig, and tenor Miles Mykkanen.Caramoor's 2018 Sonic Innovations sound art exhibition includes two new works: Nafasi Yako Ni Ya Kijani (Your Place is Green) by Walter Kitundu, commissioned by the Montalvo Arts Center in 2017, and Woven by Air by Paula Matthusen, commissioned by Caramoor. Stone Song, created by Ranjit Bhatnagar for Caramoor's 2014 exhibit, In the Garden of Sonic Delights, continued its residency this summer, along with Taylor Deupree's t(ch)ime. All four artists participated in a sound art panel discussion moderated by Stephan Moore on July 1, in conjunction with the performance of John Luther Adams's monumental outdoor percussion piece Inuksuit. In 2018 Caramoor announced the public launch of the Inspire capital campaign with the twin goals of securing the financial and programmatic future of the institution by increasing Caramoor's endowment, as well as restoring and modernizing the grounds and gardens to make it a true meeting place for the community. Thanks to the campaign, Caramoor's endowment reached more than $28 million in 2018. The second goal of the campaign, to elevate the gardens and grounds and visitor experience, launched in 2018 with updates to the Music Room facilities, and will continue in upcoming years to include a campus-wide nighttime lighting plan; a re-imagined Friends Field dedicated exclusively to programming and audiences; reconfigured parking and improved vehicle circulation; improved campus accessibility; a permanent box office near the outdoor venues; additional seating and dining amenities; two new plazas where audience members can gather; a more convenient entrance to the Venetian Theater; and much more.Desc

DescRosen House, Gardens and Estate - See Schedule OThe Rosen House is a Mediterranean Revival villa at the center of the Caramoor campus. In recognition of the unsurpassed quality and great quantity of European period rooms incorporated into the fabric of the house, Caramoor was recognized as nationally significant on the National Register of Historic Places in 2011, a distinction that it shares with sites such as Vizcaya in Miami, FL and Hearst Castle in San Simeon, CA. Built in the 1930s, it is an incomparable concert venue, a unique classroom for visiting schoolchildren, and a haven for the creative growth of young musicians. In 2018, 3,616 people visited the historic house for teas, musicales, and tours.Gardens and Estate: The 90-acre Caramoor campus, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places at the state-wide level of significance in 2001 and at the national level of significance in 2011, is comprised of four primary buildings today known as the Rosen House, the Administration Building, the Gifford Residence, and the Diane Moss Education Center, as well as ancillary buildings and landscape features, gardens, lawns, and woodland areas. A central focus of the campus is the Venetian Theater, a tented, 1,700-seat venue (built in 1958 and not a contributing structure to Caramoor's NRHP listing).Forty-five acres of the campus is deer-fenced and open to the visiting public, including the Sunken Garden, established in 1912; a Mediterranean Revival pavilion; an alley of cedar trees; and a number of gardens designed in the 1930s by landscape architect and Katonah resident Robert Ludlow Fowler, Jr. The Caramoor estate provides an incomparable setting for our cultural programs by serving as a stage for music performances and contextualizing the concerts that occur here; providing a learning laboratory for arts-in-education and emerging artist programs; and providing an idyllic haven for more than 40,000 visitors annually.Desc

DescMentoring and Arts-In-Education - See Schedule OThe development of emerging artists is central to Caramoor's mission and woven into much of our programming. Through our mentoring programs, we identify, train, and promote the next generation of vocal and instrumental artists. In 2018, 28 young musicians participated. Through these programs, we have worked with some of the finest musicians of the next generation and helped them cross the threshold from their student years into the early stages of their professional careers. For many of these artists, this is the beginning of a long standing relationship with Caramoor, as they return throughout their careers to perform for our audiences.Evnin Rising StarsFor over two decades there has been an institutional focus on training instrumental artists. Pianist, conductor, and composer Andre Previn established the mentoring program now known as the Evnin Rising Stars at Caramoor in 1992; as his tenure at Caramoor concluded, conductor Peter Oundjian took on artistic leadership of the program. Since 2008 violinist Pamela Frank has acted as Artistic Director for the Evnin Rising Stars. Each fall, eight to ten instrumentalists come together with three distinguished artists. Past musicians have included Atar Arad, Kim Kashkashian, Ani Kavafian, Marcy Rosen, Ronald Thomas, and Donald Weilerstein, among others, for a week of intensive chamber music rehearsals, coaching, and performances of works from the heart of the chamber music repertoire. At the end of the residency the musicians perform for audiences in the intimate Music Room of the historic Rosen House, giving them valuable exposure and performance experience. In 2018, seven young Rising Stars (Benjamin Baker, violin; Rubn Rengel, violin; Tatjana Roos, violin; Zo Martin-Doike, viola; Luosha Fang, viola; Alexander Hersh, cello; and Coleman Itzkoff, cello) partnered with violinist Pamela Frank, pianist Gilbert Kalish, and cellist Timothy Eddy in a week-long residency program of coaching and rehearsals. The program culminated in two performances at Caramoor. Alumni of the Rising Stars program were featured in other performances throughout the year, such as the Chamber Feast program and daytime concerts in the Rosen House. In 2018, 13 Rising Stars Alumni artists (Alexi Kenney, violin; Jesse Mills, violin; Ayane Kozasa, viola; Vicki Powell, viola; Oliver Herbert, cello; Karen Ouzounian, cello; Moran Katz, clarinet; Roman Rabinovich, piano; Tessa Lark, violin; Andrew Armstrong, piano; Edward Arron, cello; Nicholas Cords, viola; and In Mo Yang, violin) participated.Ernst Stiefel String Quartet-in-ResidenceIn 1999, with generous underwriting support from The Ernst C. Stiefel Foundation, Caramoor established a residency program for young chamber ensembles. In performing at Caramoor throughout the year, the quartet gains recognition and performance experience. In turn, the quartet hones their mentoring skills with didactic performances and workshops for approximately 1,000 area schoolchildren who attend as part of the Student Strings arts-in-education program. The quartet also partners with a young composer on a new commission which is premiered during Caramoor's Summer Music Festival. In spring 2018, the Verona Quartet, Caramoor's 2017-18 Ernst Stiefel String Quartet-in-Residence, performed at Caramoor and toured seven area schools to coach middle and high school student string musicians. The quartet returned to Caramoor in the summer to perform the world premiere of a Caramoor-commissioned piece by Julia Adolphe. In fall 2018, the Omer Quartet, Caramoor's 2018-19 Ernst Stiefel String Quartet-in-Residence, toured seven area schools and performed two concerts in Caramoor's Music Room.Schwab Vocal Rising StarsThe Schwab Vocal Rising Stars, established in 2009 and under the artistic leadership of the New York Festival of Song's Steven Blier and Michael Barrett, is a program for young vocal artists. The initiative focuses on singing outside the realm of opera, including the song recital and vocal chamber music. The week-long residency offers intensive daily coaching, rehearsals, and workshops with mentors and leaders in the field and concludes with performances at Caramoor and at Merkin Concert Hall in New York City.In 2018, four young singers (Madison Leonard, soprano; Kayleigh Decker, mezzo-soprano; Matthew Pearce, tenor; and Greg Feldmann, baritone) joined pianist Adam Rothenberg for a week-long Vocal Rising Stars program under the guidance of Michael Barrett and Steven Blier. The program, From Lute Song to the Beatles: Songs of the British Isles, culminated in two performances; the first at Caramoor and the second at Merkin Concert Hall in New York City.Arts-in-EducationSince 1974, Caramoor has provided students with arts enrichment opportunities that utilize our exceptional facilities, visiting artists, and dedicated staff, while meeting New York State education standards. We place an emphasis on reaching out to schools from under-resourced communities, in particular schools in Yonkers such as the Casimir Pulaski School, the Kahlil Gibran Elementary School, and Scholastic Academy. In 2018, we welcomed 5,077 students to our campus, with nearly half of those students participating through our Underserved Youth Arts Initiative.Developed in collaboration with teachers and school administrators, our programs meet New York State standards and complement students' classroom education in the arts, social studies, and career development. They include The Renaissance and The Middle Ages At Caramoor, Chinese Arts & Culture, and Student Strings.Desc

Form And Line ReferenceFormAndLineReferenceDescExplanationExplanationTxt
Part III, Line 4:The historic Rosen House, with its period rooms and collections, is open to the public for tours. In addition, the archival materials are a great source of humanities research in a number of fields. One example is the documentation relating to the Rosens' patronage of Leon Theremin and championing of his early electronic music instrument. This material has been a source of study for theremin researchers, including Robert Moog, who began building theremins in the 1950s as a high school student and later went on to design the Moog synthesizer and Albert Glinsky, Theremin's biographer and the author of Theremin: Ether Music and Espionage. The Rosen House collection demonstrates a tremendous breadth of art objects, furniture, and archival material. The art and furniture encompass over 1,000 cataloged objects, including European furniture from the 16th-19th centuries; European medieval and Renaissance paintings, sculpture, textiles, and decorative objects; and Asian statuary. There are also approximately 100 light fixtures and decorative elements by Edward F. Caldwell and Company dating from the 1930s. Other categories include photographs, textiles, early 20th-century costumes, and musical instruments. In addition, there is a wealth of ephemeral material relating to the Rosens, the development of the Caramoor campus, and the establishment of public performances. Objects from the collection displayed in the Music Room of the Rosen House, including a wooden 16th-century Italian ceiling, French and Swiss 16th-century stained glass, Renaissance tapestries, and 17th-century furniture, create an incomparable setting for chamber music performances. The collection also provides primary material for Caramoor's arts-in-education programs. In programs such as The Renaissance and The Middle Ages at Caramoor and Chinese Arts & Culture, students participate in guided tours and are encouraged to use the collection as inspiration for their own writing, drawing, and music-making.
Part V, Line 4:Caramoor maintains various donor-restricted endowment funds and board designated quasi-endowment funds whose purpose is to provide long term support for its charitable programs.
Part X, Line 2:Caramoor recognizes the effect of income tax positions only if those positions are more likely than not to be sustained. Management has determined that Caramoor had no uncertain tax positions that would require financial statement recognition or disclosure.

Form 990, Schedule O Narratives:The information contained in the return is relevant through December 31, 2018 and does not reflect any activity in 2019.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11bThe prepared Form 990 is reviewed by senior management, the members of the Audit Committee, and then provided to the Board of Trustees prior to filing. Management, the Audit Committee members, and the independent auditors review and discuss the return. If necessary, the independent auditors submit an updated Form 990 to the CFO. The CFO confirms that the updates are accurate and posts the final draft to Drop Box. The URL address for the Drop Box file is circulated to the Board. Comments from the Board are collected and reviewed by the Audit Committee. Final edits, if any, are made and the Form 990 is filed.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12cCaramoor followed its conflict of interest policy. A conflict of interest disclosure statement is required to be furnished annually by each trustee and each covered employee disclosing any anticipated or possible conflict situations. Covered employees are senior employees and other employees who have a decision making role in hiring or contracting. Each new trustee is advised of the policy and furnished a disclosure statement upon undertaking the duties of such office. When any conflict of interest may be involved in a transaction requiring action by the Board of Trustees or committee of the Board, the interested person shall call it to the attention of the Board of Trustees or such committee and the trustee concerned shall not vote on the matter. Moreover, the person having a conflict shall retire from the room in which the Board or committee is meeting and may not participate in the final deliberation or decisions regarding the matter under consideration. However, that person may provide the Board or committee with any and all relevant information before retiring. The minutes of the meeting of the Board or committee shall reflect that the conflict of interest was disclosed and that the interested person was not present during the final discussion or vote and did not vote. When there is a doubt as to whether a conflict of interest exists, the matter shall be resolved by the Board of Trustees excluding the person whose situation will be discussed. When any conflict of interest may be involved in a matter involving an employee, such employee shall notify the Board of Trustees and the Chief Executive Officer of Caramoor. The Board of Trustees may waive any disclosed conflict if it determines such waiver to be in the best interests of Caramoor.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15Caramoor has a formal Compensation Committee which reviews annually salaries, bonuses, and benefits for all Caramoor employees. The Committee pays special attention to the positions of CEO, AP&EP, CDO, CFO, and CMO. Annual reviews include assessment by the employee, the employee's supervisor, and recommendations from the CEO. The CEO also receives a review from the Compensation Committee. Trustees that sit on the Compensation Committee have all signed "conflict of interest" declarations, and do so annually. The Chair of the Committee is one of the leading non-profit recruiters and as such provides meaningful insights on compensation benchmarks. The Committee reviews salaries and compensation for similar sized arts organizations in the New York area, and nationally, and uses this information in their decision making. Minutes of the Committee's deliberations and decisions are forwarded to the CFO to be carried out and filed. The last meeting of the Compensation Committee took place on September 27, 2018.
Form 990, Part VI, Section C, line 18Caramoor makes its Form 990 and Form 1023 available for public inspection as required under Section 6104 of the Internal Revenue Code. The Form 990 is also posted on guidestar.org and other similar types of websites, as well as on Caramoor's website.
Form 990, Part VI, Section C, line 19Caramoor's governing documents are made available to the public upon request and are available for inspection at the finance office. Caramoor's conflict of interest policy is made available to the public upon request and is available for inspection at the finance office. Caramoor's financial statements are made available to the public upon request and are available for inspection at the finance office and on the Caramoor website.
Form 990, Part XII, Line 2c:Caramoor has a committe that assumes responsibility for the oversight of the audit of its financial statements and selection of an independent accountant. This process did not change from the prior year.
Form 990, Part I, Line 6:Through their generous commitment of time, enthusiasm, and expertise, Caramoor benefits from the contributions of volunteers throughout the year. In 2018, more than 200 people volunteered part-time at Caramoor in a variety of capacities. This number was determined by the scope of Caramoor's presenting activities and educational programs, in addition to the availability of the volunteers themselves. The majority of volunteers act as ushers at Caramoor's year-round music presentations. They are often the public face of Caramoor, acting as greeters, helping audience members to their seats, and helping to ensure the visiting public's safety and comfort. * 25-35 ushers work at each concert in the Venetian Theater * 15-20 ushers work at each concert in the Spanish Courtyard * 13 ushers work at each concert in the Music Room * 10 ushers work at each Dancing at Dusk concert on Friends' Field * 15 ushers work at each concert in the Sunken Garden Volunteers also play a major role in Caramoor's arts-in-education programs. They give tours of the collection, lead various elements of each program, and help children and teachers through the campus. They also provide guidance during public tours of the Rosen House as well as performing clerical duties and undertaking cataloging projects. Caramoor's Board of Trustees is responsible for the organization's governance, long-term strategy, and fiduciary oversight, while the senior staff is responsible for the day-to-day operation of Caramoor, including management and recommending annual budgets to the board. The board and staff work collaboratively in setting priorities for the organization's future. Caramoor's 32 board members come from diverse backgrounds and bring a wide range of professional expertise. By serving on various committees, including Finance, Building, Marketing, Development, and more, our board members act as fully engaged stewards of Caramoor's mission. One hundred percent of the board participates personally by making major contributions to support annual operating costs as well as fundraising for Caramoor. Additionally, individual board members support the organization through the establishment of endowment funds and contributions toward capital purchases. Established in 2013, the Advisory Council is comprised of members who have demonstrated a deep commitment to furthering Caramoor's mission and impact. The group, comprised of 27 members in 2018, formally meet twice a year, once with the Board of Trustees for Caramoor's Annual Meeting, and once on their own. Members also serve as members of committees of the organization, are involved in special initiatives/projects, and in advisory roles to various staff members. Individuals are selected by the Governance Committee from among our dedicated ticket buyers and donors for renewable terms of three years. Some Advisory Council members have moved up to serve on the Board of Trustees after service on the Advisory Council. The engagement of the Advisory Council continues to be an important element of Caramoor's success in engaging the broader community and undertaking a larger volume of initiatives with success.
