DescFounded in 1938, Palm Springs Art Museum (PSAM) is the largest arts cultural institution in Riverside Countys Coachella Valley. Accredited by the American Association of Museums, the Palm Springs Art Museum has 28 galleries, two sculpture gardens, four classrooms, a resource center, an artists center, five storage vaults, an eighty-five seat lecture hall, a 433-seat professional theater, a 1,000 square-foot store space, a permanent collection of 12,000+ works of art (including painting, sculpture, photography, drawings, prints, and media works, with strengths in modern and contemporary art), and a popular bistro all in a 150,000 square foot architecturally-significant building. Our satellite locations; PSAM Architecture and Design Center features a 17,000 square foot space for exhibitions and programming that explore the rich topics of architecture and design. We currently have 3500 members and we offer nine membership levels ranging from $65-$25,000. In 2019 our membership increased 44% from the previous year. Our total admissions count for FYE 2019 was 262,999 visitors vs. 267,493 in 2018. Admissions Revenue for FYE 2019 was $699,336 vs. $643,809 in 2018, and an increase of 21.11%.During FYE 2019, the Palm Springs Art Museum presented 15 exhibitions at our main and satellite locations with accompanying by relevant educational programming. Ten of the exhibitions were rotating presentations featuring work from around the world, and five were presentations of the museums own permanent collection. PSAM exhibitions focus on modern and contemporary art, glass, photography, architecture and design, and textiles, and in 2019 included collaborations with the Nevada Museum of Art and the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum in New York. The Museum collaborates and partners with the three School Districts in the region; Palm Springs Unified, Coachella Valley Unified, Desert Sands Unified and private schools as well as the areas community college; College of the Desert. We serve students of all ages in a range of creative programs and opportunities. For FYE 2019 we reached 32 schools from elementary to high school students participating in tours to Pop-Up Studio workshops. We offer our exclusive signature program Eyes On/Hands On and Art Within Reach to 3rd grade students. PSAM is very fortunate we receive grant funding to provide busses to the three school districts so students can participate in the Eyes On/Hands On and Art within Reach programs. In 2019 we provided 47 busses to transport students from the three school districts vs prior year we provided 43 busses. We were able to reach 1,138 third grade elementary school students through this specialized art program. Students receive art instruction and direct experience in the museum through field trips, tours, and art lessons in our classrooms with professional art educators. In FYE 2019 we reached a total of 6,252 K-12 grade students onsite vs in 2018 student engagement attendance was 6,184. Our Teen Docent program engages high school students who become educated about the museums collection and are trained to give tours to other students as part of a peer-to-peer program. The Teen Art Academy gives high school students extra-curricular opportunities to discuss art critically, think creatively, and make art alongside contemporary artists and professional educators while working collaboratively with their peers through tours of the museum. The Museums Childrens Summer Camp offers a five-day art workshop for children ages 5-12 over the summer months. Our goal is to have students emerge with self-confidence in their creative skills, and in the world that springs from their imagination. The curriculum is rooted in developmentally based lessons that encourage an in-depth engagement with the process of making art. Our goal is to reach 10,000 students annually by 2025.Adult education programming includes Lectures, Artist Dialogues, and Films. Our Mondays @ the Museum program (presented from October to May) is a great way for adults to get involved in the arts. The museum organizes Monday afternoon lecture programs with artists, curators, professors, and cultural producers on a range of topics related to the permanent collection and exhibitions. In 2019 PSAM had 3,296 patrons attend our Mondays @ the Museum program which is graciously supported by foundational support. Film Programs take place during the summer months, approximately 852 attendees participated in summer 2019. Free Thursday Nights is a weekly program in collaboration with the City of Palm Springs Public Art Commission to provide free evening access to all visitors. The Museum provides special programming which includes lectures, gallery talks and tours. During the winter months the Free Thursday nights event is a popular attraction for all visitors as it coincides with the City of Palm Springs downtown Village Fest market night event. For 2019 this program engaged 48,311 patrons at our main museum location, slightly down from attendance of 49,639 in 2018. However, our Architectural & Design satellite location had a 33% increase in attendance for Free Thursdays, 8,334 2019 vs. 5,501 in 2018. Free Second Sundays is a monthly program offering free admission and free programs to all visitors. This program is on the second Sunday of each month and offers all patrons a closer look at artworks from the permanent collection and special exhibitions. Visitors can also participate in art-making and artist demonstration activities. In 2019 we had approximately 12,936 individuals attend our Free Second Sunday program vs. 11,847 in 2018. Other special community programs include activities for Day of the Dead, as well as lectures and film screenings in collaboration with the citys Modernism Week and International Film Festival two of the areas high audience draw events.PSAM has always had very robust volunteer participation and support. The Museum Service Corps (MSC) was officially formed in 1986 to enhance the visitor experience and support museum staff. Eager, enthusiastic and engaging, MSC Volunteers encompass a broad range of skills and play an integral role in the museums operations, programs and events. The MSC roster in 2019 showed 220 ambassadors donating over 20,000 volunteer hours each year with an FTE in-kind value of $490,000.Located within in the museum, our Annenberg Theater is a professional Broadway performance theater which can seat 433 patrons in this state-of-the-art theater. We bring audiences a renowned combination of visual arts related programming and performing arts events. Each season, internationally known performers and concert artists are featured in presentations of music, dance, and theater. Programming in the theater also includes collaborations with the Palm Springs International Film Festival and the presentation of lectures, community events, and symposiums. In 2019 the theater hosted 53 shows and sold 36,995 tickets vs 2018 34,597 tickets in 2018. We have three performance categories 1) Entertainment Performances & Shows, 2) Educational Lectures & Symposiums and 3) Films. Our performances in 2019 sold 47% of the house across all three categories. Our outreach would not be possible without our social media platforms. In 2019, Palm Springs Art Museums website was visited 355,000 times by 240,000 users who made contact with the websites individual pages multiple times for a total of 917,000 access hits. An online museum store was created on the website on March 2019 and was visited 15,000 times by 12,000 users. (Note: these numbers are missing data from March 15 May 1, 2019 due to a transition to a new website.)Desc

Form And Line ReferenceFormAndLineReferenceDescExplanationExplanationTxt
Part III, Line 1a: If organization elected under SFAS 116 to not report are, historical treasures, oThe Museum's collection comprises more than 13,000 works of art including sculptures, paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, ceramics, and contemporary glass; Native American baskets, weavings, pottery and artifacts; Mesoamerican artifacts; and architectural drawings and archives. In addition, the collection includes the Stephen Willard Photography Archive and the Bill Anderson Photographic Archive, totaling approximately 42,000 images and archival materials. The collection is maintained for public exhibition, education, research, and the furtherance of public service rather than for financial gain. The Museum's collection, acquired through donations and purchases, are not recognized as assets in the accompanying financial statements. Purchases of collection items are recorded as decreases in the appropriate net asset classification in the year of acquisition. Contributed collection items are not reflected in the financial statements. Proceeds from the sale of art are recorded as increases in the appropriate net asset classification in the year of sale and are reserved for the acquisition of works of art and conservation of the collections existing works of art.The following amounts are the purchase price or the fair market value at the time of the gift to the Museum at September 30, 2019:Art $67,643,224; Anthropology $1,893,698; Reserve $3,018,530; Frey House $525,552; Library, archives, and other items $3,661,659; Items held for deaccession $460,833.Collection items consist of art objects that are held for educational and curatorial purposes, including public display and research. Each of the items is cataloged, preserved, and cared for, and kept unencumbered. Activities verifying their existence and assessing their condition are performed continuously. Collection items acquired either through purchase or donation are not capitalized. The proceeds from deaccession of collection items may be used for acquisitions of new collection items or the direct care of existing collections. The Museum adheres to the ethical principles and definition of direct care established by the American Alliance of Museums and considers direct care to entail actions that enhance the life, usefulness, or quality of the collection items to ensure they will continue to benefit the public. The Museum's collection management policy includes conservation services, archival services, collections care investments identified through a conservation assessment and/or plan, and collection care training for staff and volunteers, as activities that are considered direct care of collection items. Purchases of collection items are recorded as decreases in net assets without donor restrictions if purchased with assets without donor restrictions and as decreases in net assets with donor restrictions if purchased with donor-restricted assets. Contributions of collection items are not recognized in the statement of activities. Proceeds from deaccessions or insurance recoveries are reflected on the statement of activities as nonoperating revenues. The fair market values of the works acquired through contributions were $3,403,956 (unaudited) and $2,069,715 (unaudited) during the years ended September 30, 2019 and 2018, respectively.Proceeds from the sale of deaccessioned items were $0 for the years ended September 30, 2019 and 2018, respectively. Collections purchased were $29,600 and $29,550 during the years ended September 30, 2019 and 2018, respectively. As part of a plan approved by the Board in June 2005, works of art not deemed to be strategic were deaccessioned from the collection. It was agreed by the Board that deaccessioning proceeds would be credited to the art acquisition account. The Board also approved the use of net cash surpluses in the art acquisition account to repay external debt for a limited time, and that the borrowings from the account would be repaid over time. The deaccessioning procedures were discussed with the American Association of Museums and with the Accreditation Committee in February 2007, and such practices confirmed by such organizations as being appropriate and consistent with best practices.Funds were then borrowed from the art acquisition account to repay the Museum's external debts. As of September 30, 2019 and 2018, a balance of $838,941 and $868,541, respectively remains to be reimbursed to the art acquisition account as funds become available. Commencing in 2007, it was determined by the Board that any new deaccessioned funds raised by the Museum would be maintained in a segregated account and would be strictly for the acquisition of works of art. Beginning with the year ended September 30, 2019, the Museum has expanded the use of these funds to include the direct care of existing works of art within the collection. As of September 30, 2019, all proceeds from the sale of new deaccessioned art were either expended for the purchase of art, used to maintain existing art, or remain in the segregated account.
Part V, Line 4: Intended uses of the endowment fund.THE MUSEUM'S BOARD-APPROVED DISTRIBUTIONS FROM THE ENDOWMENT FUNDS ARE USED FOR SUPPORT OF GENERAL OPERATIONS AS WELL AS SUPPORT OF SPECIFIC PROGRAMS AS PROVIDED BY ENDOWMENT DONORS, IF APPLICABLE.
Part X : FIN48 FootnoteThe Museum is exempt from federal income and California franchise taxes under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and Section 23701(d) of the State Revenue and Taxation Code, respectively. The Museum's policy is to record income tax related interest and penalties in operating expenses. For the years ended September 30, 2019 and 2018, there were no interest or penalties. The Museum's Forms 990, Return of Organization Exempt from Income Tax, are subject to examination by the Internal Revenue Service, generally for three years after they are filed. The Museum's Forms 199, California Exempt Organization Annual Information Return, are subject to examination by the Franchise Tax Board, generally for four years after they are filed. Management has reviewed tax positions for open years and has determined that a provision for uncertain tax positions is not required.

Part I, Line 32, Hire and Use of Third PartiesFor the sale (deaccession) of works of art in the permanent collection we provide documentation on the work to commercial auction houses (usually three) and ask them for a proposal for the sale of the work, including information on the marketing of the sale, pre-auction estimates of sale price, and their financial terms (their commission, expenses charged to us, etc.). A public auction of the work is widely considered in the museum world generally to be the most transparent and lucrative way to handle a sale, although occasionally other means are employed, such as a trade.
Part I, Line 33, Revenues Not ReportedAS PERMITTED UNDER GENERALLY ACCEPTED ACCOUNTING PRINCIPLES, PALM SPRINGS ART MUSEUM DOES NOT REPORT CONTRIBUTIONS OF ART AS REVENUE. DURING THE YEAR, THE MUSEUM RECEIVED 120 DONATIONS VALUED AT $3,042,956, BASED ON INDEPENDENT APPRAISALS.As a service to museums, most auction houses will either waive their commission entirely or charge a very minimal fee (one or two percent of the sale price), as well as other expenses such as shipping, photography, etc.
