DescCivil Eats has a proven track record that includes the following accomplishments:1. Journalistic Leadership: Civil Eats has reported on some of the most important food and agriculture stories of our time. Unique in the media landscape, food justice has been central to our reporting since its inception. 2. Mainstream Media Resource: Civil Eats collaborates with high-profile print and online publications, including NBC News, The Guardian, HuffPost, PBS/ITVS, New York Magazine, Eater, Maplight, Salon, Slate, Public Radio International, TIME, The Atlantic, Mother Jones, Harvest Public Media, Food & Wine, and KQED, the San Francisco NPR affiliate. 3. Educating Thought Leaders: The site is on the regular reading lists of policymakers in D.C. and grassroots leaders alike, and our stories appear in daily news round-ups, and are shared on social media by elected officials and notable individuals.In 2020, Civil Eats produced 285 original stories with more than 100 freelance reporters. When the pandemic hit in early March, Civil Eats doubled its reporting to focus on the impact of coronavirus on the food system. In addition, Civil Eats doubled-down on its commitment to reporting on food justice unique in the food media landscapein the wake of the response to the killing of George Floyd. The site was awarded Best Group Food Blog by the prestigious International Association of Culinary Professionals (IACP), and also awarded a National Association of Black Journalists Salute to Excellence Award for Best Use of Multimedia.Despite the challenging year, and a hyperactive news cycle, Civil Eats was also been successful on a number of important organizational fronts. For the first time, Civil Eats was ben able to stabilize andgrow, due to multi-year funding from a number of new funders. This much-needed, long-term investment has allowed the team to make capital investments in general operating costs to transition to an independent 501(c)3 nonprofit, bring on a highly-regarded board of directors, hire independent accountants and attorneys, and begin the long-overdue process of making its chronically underpaid edit team employees (until 2021, all part-time and freelance). With these newfunds, the team also was able to finally redesign the site, perhaps the most critical aspect of its work.In the middle of the pandemic, the team launched new Civil Eats TV video series, showcasing individuals who are fixing the food system, and also collaborated with other organizations throughout the year, and our stories were consistently shared by other outlets, including BillMoyers, High Country News, and Investigate Midwest. Our work was cited and included regularly in the New York Times, Wonkette, The New Yorker, USA Today, Rolling Stone, Environmental Health News daily newsletter, Politico Morning Ags newsletter, the nightly AGree roundup, and shared by elected officials and celebrities on social media. Civil Eats was also selected to be part a foundingpartner of media analyst Ken Doctors new venture, Lookout, which launched in 2020.Desc
