Facts And Circumstances TestCurrent Year Facts and Circumstances: How we maintain the facilities for public access and enjoymentStone Barns Center closed to the public in March 2020 due to COVID. In response to COVID Stone Barns created the resourcED Program, including The Kitchen Farming Project and Harvest Corps Supporting the independent local food movement during the COVID-19 crisisThe resourcEDd program, a partnership between Stone Barns Center and Blue Hill restaurant, was an educational initiative supporting the independent local food movement during the COVID-19 crisis and beyond. Through resourcED, we offered a series of food and farm boxes featuring vegetables, whole grains and fresh bread, local meats, fish, flowers and pastured eggs. Proceeds from the sale of the boxes supported regional farmers, food-insecure neighbors and our broader community, enabling us to provide meals to local healthcare providers and communities experiencing food emergencies.Beginning farmers: Stone Barns offers training and resources for people committed to developing a career in farming. Elements of the program include an on-farm apprenticeships, on-farm educational experiences, and an annual conference for beginning farmers. The initiative equips beginning farmers with the knowledge and hands-on experience to grow better-tasting, healthier food and become responsible stewards of the land. How we reach a broad range of people beyond our facility: We expand public support for regenerative agriculture and our work though social media and other internet channels, partnerships, speaking engagements and public relations campaigns to reach regional and national audiences. Our annual young farmers conference was hosted virtually, reaching tens of thousands of participants and viewers. We post additional farm stories and training resources to ensure that our programs have the greatest impact possible.Fundraising activities undertaken to support our workStone Barns pursues a range of strategies to broaden its donor base. We offer membership promotions, attend numerous community events to share information about our educational work and establish partnerships to engage new supporters. Stone Barns staff members meet regularly with interested individuals and foundation officers to discuss philanthropic support of our work as well.FactsAndCircumstancesTestTxt

Form 990, Part III, 4b - Growing Farmers InitiativeStone Barns Centers Growing Farmers Initiative works to inspire the next generation of farmers and increase the number of small and midsize farmers who are empowered to build environmentally and financially resilient operations. We equip young farmers with the knowledge and hands-on experience they need to grow better-tasting, healthier food and become responsible stewards of the land. Core elements of the program include apprenticeships, technical trainings, a national Young Farmers Conference (held annually in December), and an online community and hub for beginning farmers.
Form 990, Part III, 4c - High School Education ProgramsHigh School students are a critical audience for Stone Barns because engaging them in critical analysis and dialogue about the food they encounter every day is the first step in establishing a pattern of improved eating as adults and cultivating the next generation of thoughtful food consumers. Education programs at Stone Barns include semester and school-year food studies curriculum and cooking labs for high school students delivered in partnership with teachers from around the country. Our in-depth, interactive curriculum explores foods relationship to culture, the environment and power, integrating science, ELA and social studies learning.
Form 990, Part III, 4c - Public Programs Raising awareness on prStone Barns Center welcomes tens of thousands of visitors every year and engages orders of magnitude more through virtual resources and advocacy across the country. The Center offers a variety of programs about food and agriculture including tours, lectures, conferences and virtual and hands-on farming and cooking education. A key strategy for raising awareness is shoring up the next generation of food systems leaders who work to identify and overcome the gravest barriers to bringing about a sustainable food system. The goal of all of our public outreach is to connect people to what they eat and awaken them to the health and environmental consequences of what they eat.
Form 990, Part III, Line 1 - Organization MissionOur mission is to create a healthy and sustainable food system that benefits us all. We work to change the way America eats and farms by raising public awareness about the value of healthy, seasonal, sustainable food and engaging with food system changemakers; training new farmers in resilient, regenerative farming techniques; providing teacher training and educating high school students about our complex food system and how to change it; and experimenting with and improving sustainable farming practices.
Form 990, Pt. III, 4a - resourcED ProgramThe resourcEDd program, a partnership between Stone Barns Center and Blue Hill restaurant, was an educational initiative supporting the independent local food movement during the COVID-19 crisis and beyond. Through resourcED, we offered a series of food and farm boxes featuring vegetables, whole grains and fresh bread, local meats, fish, flowers and pastured eggs. Proceeds from the sale of the boxes supported regional farmers, food-insecure neighbors and our broader community, enabling us to provide meals to local healthcare providers and communities experiencing food emergencies.THE KITCHEN FARMING PROJECT - The Kitchen Farming Project followed the out-of-work Blue Hill chefsand 4000 participants around the worldas they confronted the challenges and experienced the pleasures of growing their own food. KFP participants received recipes for what they needed to start their own gardens, along with essential tools, instructional videos, detailed plans, and tips for weeding, harvesting, and ultimately cooking their harvests. HARVEST CORPS - A program connecting out-of-work culinary professionals and students to volunteer opportunities on farms, consisted of two main parts: placement on a farm local to the participant and participation in an online learning community. The Harvest Corps Community Supported Learning (CSL) mission was to enrich the time on the farm and provide a deeper connection to how volunteer experiences in the fields and pastures connect with the greater food system. Through conversations, demonstrations, tours and workshopped projects, 82 students and cooks throughout the country had the opportunity to reflect, share, research and engage in ways that deepened their time behind the stove and their academic studies. The 82 cooks represented more than 40 cuisines and 137 undergraduate students who engaged in more than 35 academic disciplines. The learning program involved weekly meetings, reading assignments and a four-week group project that invited Harvest Corps participants to join together in drawing connections among the field, pasture and kitchen. Those who completed both the project and an additional research paper were eligible to receive credit from their academic institution.
