DescYouth Development: We believe that all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. Our goal is to help youth cultivate the values, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health and educational achievement. And, because they learn from our role models, we know that they will one day become role models for others. In a typical year, the Rye Y's youth development programs include after-school child care, a pre-school enrichment program, summer and vacation camps, movement and enrichment classes for babies and toddlers, and youth sports (competitive and non-competitive). We would also offer a safe space for teens to socialize with friends, stay physically fit and develop leadership skills. And families would enjoy fun activities, sports and recreation together. However, 2020 was not a typical year. The Rye Y was forced to close its doors on March 14 due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Y remained closed until early July, when we were able to reopen the two pools, in a limited capacity, and offer small group gymnastics and sports clinics for children. The fitness center reopened in early September at 33% capacity. As of May 2021, NYS capacity restrictions remain in place although some of the restrictions will be eased by late May/early June. Even so, we were able to offer a range of programs for children and families throughout the year, both virtually and in-person. January 1- March 14, 2020 * During the 2019-2020 school year, 74 students played and learned at After School Adventures (ASA), the Rye Y's licensed school-age child care program. * Our Pre-School Enrichment program offered 34 three to five-year-olds a variety of fun activities, including swim lessons, sports instruction, movement, cooking, art, science, gardening and playground time. * The Rye Y's School Recess Program keeps kids moving, prevents bullying and makes that brief time after lunch a positive experience. During the 2019-2020 school year, we placed recess coordinators in three elementary schools in two school districts: Osborn School in Rye City and Daniel Warren and F.E. Bellows in Rye Neck. Over 1,350 children were served before the schools closed in March 2020. * Our school break Vacation Clubs give kids in grades K-6 a fun, active mini-camp experience and provide working families with child care. During the February Vacation Clubs, 42 children enjoyed sports, games, swimming, arts and crafts, nature, STEAM, and special events. Another 95 children and teens participated in specialty clubs for basketball, gymnastics and teen fitness. * Knowing that youth development means more than sports, the Rye Y ran enrichment programs for young children, including Kiddie Crafts, Moving & Grooving to the Beat, Rock Your World Music, Pre-School Cooking Club, Hip Hop Jazz, STEM Mechanics, Chess Club, and more. * The Rye Y's Leaders' Club offers young adults the opportunity to create positive change and implement creative ideas in service to the Y and their community. The club serves high school and middle school students through weekly meetings and volunteer opportunities. During the 2019-2020 school year (Sept 2019- mid March 2020), teens volunteered in the Y's after-school program, fitness center and sports department and helped with family events such as First Family Fridays, NERF nights, the Halloween Carnival, Santa's visit. * The Rye Y continued to be actively involved in RyeACT (Rye Action for Children and Teens), a grassroots coalition that is mobilizing our community to prevent teen substance use and support healthy choices. As the Coalition's fiscal agent, our staff handles financial matters related to RyeACT's federal Drug-Free Communities grant. This work continued throughout the year. * Teens and tweens need safe places, caring adults and positive activities. The Rye Y rocked Saturday nights with fun, games and food during our Second Saturday events for middle school students, held in January and February. * Staying in on a Friday night is fun when you're doing something you love at the Y! In January 2020, 21 children flipped for our Gymnasts' Night In event. This fun-filled evening for ages five and up included dinner, gymnastics, group games and open work-outs. * During the November 2019-February 2020 season, 120 boys and 75 girls played in the Y's Youth Basketball League (YBL). * The Rye Y is a leading provider of swim lessons for all ages. Between November 2019 and mid March, 885 children (and a few adults) learned to swim or enhanced their skills. * During the 2019-2020 season (September-March), 149 children and teens developed their skills, formed new friendships, and trained for competition as part of the Wave Ryeders swim team. Another 49 youth also participated in WaveRyeder's non-competitive team. * During the 2019-2020 school years, 95 girls each season honed their skills through the Rye Y's gymnastics team, pre-team and Talent Group. Our progressive gymnastics program for ages five and up teaches skills on the balance beam, uneven bars, floor exercise and vault in a safe and nurturing environment. * First Family Fridays brought families with young children together for monthly themed activities at the Y. March 15- December 31, 2020 * In April we launched our Rye Y at Home YouTube Channel, which featured adult exercise and family and children's activities. By the end of the year, it had received 7602 views. * After we were forced to cancel summer camp, we still wanted to meet the needs of working parents who relied on camp for child care. In late June, we opened a full-day summer child care program. Over seven weeks, 51 children ages 5-12 enjoyed games, outdoor play, gym time and arts and crafts, while working parents and guardians enjoyed peace of mind knowing that their kids were safely and actively engaged. * Starting in July, and throughout the summer, 62 children stayed active and learned new skills in summer gymnastics & sports clinics. * Our popular children's musician Dawny Dew led four outdoor summer programs. Fifty kids and adults enjoyed music, dancing and bubbles! * In September, we began offering half-day, full-day and after school care, including remote learning help, for families dealing with pandemic-era school schedules. During the 2020-2021 school year, over 100 children participated in our school-age child care programs. * When school re-started in September--remotely, in-person and through a hybrid schedule-the Rye Y teamed up with Rye Recreation for Rec Lunch and Recess. Throughout the fall, children were bussed from Milton, Midland, and Osborn Elementary Schools or dropped off from their home learning pods to the recreation department for lunch, fun and games. * In October, we invited families to an outdoor COVID-safe Halloween carnival. Children dressed in costume and enjoyed fun activities, arts and crafts and treats. In December, 30 families received holiday goody bags and said hello to a very special guest during our drive-by meet and greet with Santa. * As our facility was allowed to gradually reopen during the summer and fall, the Rye Y resumed the following programs: swim lessons, the WaveRyeders swim team, sports and gymnastics classes, First Family Fridays, and the school recess program at Rye Neck elementary schools. Teens have also returned to the fitness center, finding a release from the stress of pandemic-era school demands.Desc

DescAquatics Safety and Instruction: Knowing how to swim and be safe around water is one of the most important life skills a person can learn. We believe that these vital skills can be learned at any stage of life, from infancy (6+ months) to youth to the senior years. The Rye Y's aquatics programs focus on the basic techniques of swimming, training for team competition, and specialized skills such as life guarding and CPR. They foster increased confidence in the water and team building, and give swimmers of all ages a fitness activity that can be enjoyed throughout life. We also offer free pool time for family swim and to other non-profit organizations and children with special needs as a way to strengthen family ties and build community relationships. When the Rye Y was forced to close in mid-March due to the growing COVID-19 pandemic, most of our aquatics activities were put on hold. Fortunately, our two pools were allowed to reopen in early July, ahead of other program areas. Although state and local regulations meant that we had to limit capacity, and reservations were required, our swimmers were happy to return to the water. We started with lap swim and gradually opened to swim lessons, water exercise classes, and the Wave Ryeders swim team. The Rye Y is committed to keeping its programs and services open to all families, regardless of economic circumstance. Thanks to our Y Cares program, we are able to provide scholarships, subsidies and financial assistance to children and families who would not otherwise be able to enjoy all that the Y offers. The following aquatics activities were offered in 2020: January-March 14 and July-December * The Rye Y is a leading provider of swim lessons for all ages. Between November 2019 and mid-March, 885 children (and a few adults) learned to swim or enhance their skills. From August through December, we had 734 participants in group swim lessons. An additional 115 children took private swim lessons. * The goal of the Wave Ryeders swim team is to promote fun, camaraderie, friendship, new skills, physical fitness and positive values that extend beyond the pool. During the 2019-2020 season (September-March), 149 children and teens trained for competition as part of the Wave Ryeders team. Another 49 youth also participated in Wave Ryeder's non-competitive team. Although the 2020-2021 team was unable to compete due to the pandemic, 128 children and teens returned to the pool for the friendships, skill development, and love of swimming. * From January through early March, the Rye Y continued to provide free pool time to the Rye Association for the Handicapped two days per week, a partnership that has lasted over 50 years! * From January until March, we opened our pool every Sunday morning to families with special needs children. During this free, recreational swim for community members, a Rye Y facilitator assisted with helpful tips and water games. We also taught swimming to children with special needs through our Super Swimming Stars program for ages 3-12. * We helped active older adults stay fit and socially connected through water exercise classes, including Water Stretch, Water Aerobics, Aqua Flex, Aqua Zumba and more. After the pool reopened in July, we began offering general water exercise classes that focused on cardio health, flexibility and strength. * Between reopening day on July 7 and December 31, 2020, our swimmers made 17,651 reservations for time in the Brookside and Pa Cope pools! March 15-June 2020 May is Water Safety Month and the Rye Y didn't let the pandemic stop us from promoting safety around water virtually. Our aquatics team produced several videos for our Rye Y at Home YouTube channel, including Water Safety at Home (3 lessons), Adult Supervision, Swim Skills at Home, and Quick CPR. We also provided a free virtual workshop designed for Au Pairs to promote water safety and drowning prevention.Desc

DescHealthy Living: The Rye Y offers many opportunities for members to pursue their health and wellness goals, including a 3,800-sq.ft fitness center, group exercise classes, personal training and social activities. Our community health programs include LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, which helps cancer survivors regain their total health; a Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring Program; the YMCA's Diabetes Prevention Program; and Walk with Ease for adults with arthritis. We are continuously re-evaluating our programs to ensure that we meet the needs and interests of our members and community. We are also committed to keeping our programs and services open to all, regardless of economic circumstance. Thanks to our Y Cares Financial Assistance Program, we are able to provide subsidies to children and families who would not otherwise be able to enjoy all that the Y offers. Although the Rye Y closed on March 14 due to the growing COVID-19 pandemic, we were still able to support the health of our members and the broader Sound Shore community in the following ways: January 1-March 14, 2020 * LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is a 12-week small group program that helps adult cancer survivors reclaim their health and well-being following a cancer diagnosis. Through this program we create communities among survivors and guide them through safe physical activity, help them build supportive relationships, and reduce stress - leading to an improved quality of life. Launched in 2011, LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is offered free of charge and is open to members and non-members. In early 2020, one LIVESTRONG at the YMCA class was running. Unfortunately, it was cut short by our closure. We look forward to starting new classes as soon as it's safe for cancer survivors to gather in public places. Between January 25 and March 3, we also ran two LIVESTRONG at the YMCA alumni classes, which allowed past participants to maintain the strength and connections they found during their time in class. * We continued our partnership with Greenwich Hospital, through which we brought a visiting nurse to the Y once a week to conduct blood pressure checks free of charge for our members. * The Y's continued collaboration with Wainwright House, a local spiritual center, allowed us to offer spirit/mind programming, including several forms of yoga and Pilates. * The Y kept pace with our senior membership through classes and programs that keep active older adults healthy, fit and connected. In early 2020, we offered the Crafty Crew (knitting, crocheting and other craftwork), Booked at the Y (a book club), and Mah Jong and Canasta games. * Rye Y instructors brought wellness opportunities to The Osborn senior living community, where we offered eight stretch, yoga and fitness and three pool classes weekly. A Rye Y trainer also supervised The Osborn's fitness center for three hours a day three times a week. A Y lifeguard kept elderly swimmers safe during morning pool time three times a week. March 15- December 31, 2020 * In April, we launched our Rye Y at Home YouTube Channel, which featured adult exercise and family and children's activities. By the end of the year, it had received 7602 views. * COVID-safe outdoor group exercise classes kept members moving and connected with others from mid-summer to late fall. Regular classes included Pickleball at the Rye Recreation tennis courts and Basic Training, Zumba, Kickboxing and more at the Rye Y. * We offered dozens of live online group exercise classes via Zoom. Members were able to take their favorite classes from the safety of their own homes. * In preparation for reopening, we developed a detailed, comprehensive plan that outlined new cleaning, sanitizing, registration and check-in procedures; social distancing protocols; and member and staff responsibilities. * In July, we were able to reopen our two pools. Although state and local regulations meant that we had to limit capacity, and reservations were required, our swimmers were happy to return to the water. We started with lap swim and gradually opened to swim lessons and the WaveRyders swim team. * In early September, we were finally able to reopen our fitness center at 33% capacity. Members registered for a specific time slot; equipment was spaced farther apart or taken out of use to maintain social distancing. * The Rye Y hosted Fall Prevention Week activities from September 21-25. Approximately 20 active older adults participated in outdoor and virtual classes, including Active Fitness, Tai Chi, fall prevention exercises, and Limber Up. * In August, there was dancing in the street when the Rye Y held four free Zumba classes for the community on Purchase Street in Rye, in partnership with the Rye Chamber of Commerce. * In October, the Rye Y launched Walk with Ease, a program for adults who are struggling with arthritis. As one participant said "By the end of the six weeks I was able to walk almost a mile and a half. Doesn't sound like much - but before Walk with Ease a single block was almost too much for me." Because the program was grant-funded, we were able to offer this first class free of charge for members and non-members. * In November, our community health staff restructured the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA alumni program. Former program participants can now enjoy weekly virtual classes for a five-week session. Much like the core program, our alumni classes are designed to increase strength, endurance, flexibility, and balance. * Also in November, the Rye Y partnered with WestMed Medical Group for a virtual discussion on "Mental Health for Cancer Survivors and their Families During the COVID-19 Pandemic". The event, which was free and open to the public, included a demonstration of LIVESTRONG at the YMCA exercises.Desc

DescSocial Responsibility: For 107 years, the Rye Y has been a hub of community life and a catalyst for positive change. When the COVID-19 pandemic forced us to close in mid-March 2020, the Rye Y quickly adapted to the new reality, showing resilience and resourcefulness in the face of unprecedented challenges. We helped our members stay active and engaged through on-demand, Zoom, and outdoor group exercise classes. We collected food for the hungry and donated t-shirts for masks. We ran a summer child care program, and expanded our school-year child care to meet the needs of working parents as they navigated ever-changing school schedules We did all this and more while keeping a powerful promise: no-one will be turned away from a Y program or activity because he or she can't pay. From the partnerships that foster strong communities to the small group programs that promote health and well-being, the spirit of social responsibility infuses every aspect of our work. In 2020, we demonstrated our commitment to social responsibility through the following: * Our Y Cares Financial Assistance program helps keep the Y accessible to all. In 2020, we awarded $64,060 in program and membership subsidies to 72 families and individuals who needed a helping hand, even with our facility closed for nearly four months due to the pandemic. * Between early January and mid-March, the Rye Y continued to provide free pool time, lifeguards and meeting space to the Rye Association for the Handicapped two days per week. Our partnership with this community organization has spanned over 50 years! * During the early weeks of the pandemic, the Rye Y's membership team reached out to our members, especially seniors, to make sure they were well and managing the newly imposed isolation and stress. * In April, we launched our Rye Y at Home YouTube Channel, which featured adult exercise and family and children's activities. By the end of the year, it had received 7602 views. * The Rye Y donated five boxes of unused t-shirts to Hope Community Services in New Rochelle to be turned into masks for their clients, staff and volunteers. * In May, the Rye Y created a virtual fitness internship for Rye High School seniors. The students participated in HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) via Zoom with one of our instructors. * The goal of the Rye Y's Togetherhood initiative is to engage volunteers in service projects that help local nonprofits and build community. Although the "together" part of the program was thwarted in 2020, Y members still found ways to serve. During May and June, seven volunteers knitted and crocheted 88 infant caps and three baby blankets for clients of Open Door Family Medical Centers. The knitting and crocheting team grew in July when 16 volunteers began creating baby blankets for economically vulnerable families served by The Sharing Shelf in Port Chester. In late July, we held a Togetherhood "Drive-By Food Drive" for Bread of Life pantry. Community and Y members delivered their non-perishable food items to the Y's parking lot, where two high school students lifted the donations from trunks and back seats. Families from the Y's Summer Childcare program also donated several bags of food during drop-off and pick-up times. In October, we placed a large permanent bin in our entryway, making it easier for our members to donate food to Bread of Life any time they come to the Y. * In August, there was dancing in the street when the Rye Y held four free Zumba classes for the community on Purchase Street in Rye, in partnership with the Rye Chamber of Commerce. * Safety Around Water is a free Rye Y drowning prevention initiative that gives young children the skills and confidence to stay safe around water. While we weren't able to hold classes at local schools or in person at the Y, as we have in the past, our aquatics staff produced safety videos for families to view at home. * In November, the Rye Y partnered with WestMed Medical Group for a virtual discussion on "Mental Health for Cancer Survivors and their Families During the COVID-19 Pandemic". The event, which was free and open to the public, included a demonstration of LIVESTRONG at the YMCA exercises. * As part of our Safe Routes to School initiative, the Rye Y sponsored the 10th Annual Heads Up! Distracted Driving and Walking Poster Contest for Rye High School students. The contest engaged students in raising awareness about the dangers of distracted driving and walking. Fifty-eight students participated in the 2020-2021 contest, which was judged-via Zoom--by eight community leaders, including the Rye City Mayor and the Rye City Schools superintendent. * The Rye Y wrapped up the year with a holiday Giving Tree. We were heartened by the generosity of our members who donated 150 gifts for the children served by Port Chester's Carver Center.Desc

Form 990, Part III, Line 2 New program servicesDue to the COVID 19 pandemic, the Rye Y was closed for several months but was able to offer a number of virtual program classes and activities for our members and the community including group exercise, arts and crafts, family activities, water safety tips, pre-school cooking , chronic disease programming and youth sports. Once we reopened and the school year began, we offered full day child care to assist families with their children's remote learning needs based on the hybrid school schedules most of the school districts in our area were operating under.
Form 990, Part III, Line 3 Significant changes in program servicesDue to the COVID 19 pandemic the Rye Y was closed for several months and was forced to offer much of our programming virtually. Once we were able to re-open, we had to modify many of our programs and were not able to run some of them due to the safety restrictions issued by New York State related to the pandemic.
Form 990, Part III, Line 4d Description of other program services(Expenses $ including grants of $) Social Responsibility: For 107 years, the Rye Y has been a hub of community life and a catalyst for positive change. We were heartened by the generosity of our members who donated 150 gifts for the children served by Port Chester's Carver Center.
