| Form And Line Reference | form 990, schedule D, Part III, LINE 1A | FormAndLineReferenceDesc |
| Explanation | THE MUSEUM'S ART COLLECTION IS MADE AVAILABLE TO ITS MEMBERS AND THE PUBLIC TO ENCOURAGE AND EXPAND THE STUDY AND APPRECIATION OF ART THROUGH A PROGRAM OF PUBLIC EXHIBITIONS, EDUCATION AND RESEARCH. COMPONENTS OF THE MUSEUMS COLLECTION, WHICH HAVE BEEN ACQUIRED THROUGH PURCHASES AND CONTRIBUTIONS, ARE NOT RECOGNIZED AS ASSETS ON THE STATEMENT OF FINANCIAL POSITION. PURCHASES OF COLLECTION ITEMS ARE RECORDED IN THE YEARS IN WHICH THE ITEMS ARE ACQUIRED AS DECREASES IN NET ASSETS IN ACCORDANCE WITH DONOR RESTRICTIONS ON THE ASSETS USED TO PURCHASE THE ITEMS. CONTRIBUTED COLLECTION ITEMS ARE NOT REFLECTED ON THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS BECAUSE THE MUSEUM DOES NOT HOLD COLLECTION ITEMS FOR SALE. PROCEEDS FROM DEACCESSIONS ARE ADDED TO DEACCESSION FUNDS WITHIN NET ASSETS WITHOUT DONOR RESTRICTIONS, AND ARE USED TO ACQUIRE OTHER ITEMS FOR THE COLLECTION AND direct CARE. In FY 20, the Museum acquired $1,931,464 in new artwork; this amount is reported in Form 990, Part IX, Line 24a. FORM 990, SCHEDULE D, PART III, LINE 4 DESCRIPTION OF THE COLLECTION: THE BROOKLYN MUSEUM HOLDS COLLECTIONS THAT ARE BOTH BROAD AND DEEP, AND INCLUDE ART FROM AROUND THE WORLD AND FROM ANCIENT TIMES TO THE PRESENT. AS OF FY20, THE BROOKLYN MUSEUM'S COLLECTIONS ARE ORGANIZED AS FOLLOWS: 1. ARTS OF THE AMERICAS AND EUROPE A. AMERICAN ART B. EUROPEAN ART C. ARTS OF THE AMERICAS D. DECORATIVE ARTS 2. ARTS OF ANCIENT EGYPT, AFRICA AND ASIA A. EGYPTIAN ART B. AFRICAN ART C. ART OF THE PACIFIC ISLANDS D. ASIAN ART E. ARTS OF THE MIDDLE EAST 3. CONTEMPORARY ART A. CONTEMPORARY ART B. PHOTOGRAPHY 4. ELIZABETH A. SACKLER CENTER FOR FEMINIST ART THESE CURATORIAL DIVISIONS ARE OVERSEEN BY THE DEPUTY DIRECTOR AND CHIEF CURATOR, WHO, IN TURN OVERSEES SENIOR AND JUNIOR CURATORS WORKING IN EACH OF THE COLLECTION AREAS. THE LIBRARY, CONSERVATION, REGISTRAR, EXHIBITIONS, AND COLLECTIONS MANAGEMENT DEPARTMENTS ASSIST WITH THE PRESERVATION, CATALOGUING, AND EXHIBITION OF WORKS FROM THE COLLECTION. THE BROOKLYN MUSEUM HAS ONE OF THE GREATEST COLLECTIONS IN THE COUNTRY; REENVISIONING THE COLLECTIONS' MEANING AND CONNECTION TO OUR WORLD AND AUDIENCES TODAY ENSURES ITS RELEVANCE AND VITALITY. THE BROOKLYN MUSEUM SEES ISSUES OF COLLECTING AS STRATEGICALLY INSEPERABLE FROM THE CONCERNS OF PRESENTATION IN OUR GALLERIES. BRINGING OUR VAST PANORAMA OF OBJECTS SUCCESSFULLY INTO THE FUTURE REQUIRES US TO MOVE AWAY FROM STRICTLY COMPARTMENTALIZED CONNOISSEURSHIP, INSTEAD THINKING ABOUT OUR COLLECTION AS A VITAL WHOLE. TODAY, OUR KNOWLEDGE OF HOW ART HISTORY AND SOCIAL HISTORY INTERACT ENCOURAGES US TO PRESENT THE MUSEUMS EXPANSIVE HOLDINGS FROM A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE, WITH PERMEABLE BOUNDARIES RATHER THAN RESTRICTIVE GEOGRAPHICAL OR HISTORICAL BORDERS. TO ACCOMPLISH THESE GOALS, EVERY OBJECT IN OUR COLLECTION MUST HELP US TO TELL THE STORY OF ART, BOLDLY AND COMPELLINGLY TO OUR DIVERSE AUDIENCES. THE BETTER WE TELL THE STORY, THE BROADER AND DEEPER OUR AUDIENCES PARTICIPATION IN IT WILL BE. BUILDING THE COLLECTION: NEW ACQUISITIONS ARE GUIDED BY A COLLECTIONS PLAN THAT WAS OFFICIALLY ADOPTED BY THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES AND IS REVIEWED BY THE COLLECTIONS COMMITTEE AND THE CURATORIAL TEAM ON A REGULAR BASIS. NEW ACQUISITIONS ARE CONSIDERED ACCORDING TO THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA: - WILL THE WORK BE IMMEDIATELY USEFUL IN THE GALERIES AND WILL IT EXPAND THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE THERE? - WILL THE WORK BE TRANSFORMATIVE FOR THE COLLECTION? - CAN IT BE USED TO ILLUMINATE MORE THAN ONE COLLECTION AREA, AND BRIDGE THE GAPS BETWEEN COLLECTIONS AND CULTURES? - IS IT AN OBJECT OF TRUE EXCELLENCE, FULLY AUTHENTIC AND IN GOOD CONDITION? - DOES IT HAVE SPECIAL REASONANCE WITH WORKS ALREADY IN THE COLLECTION? WILL IT INCREASE THE USEFULNESS OF EXISTING COLLECTIONS BY MAKING THEM MORE UNDERSTANDABLE? IN FY20, 371,777 VISITORS EXPLORED THE MUSEUM'S WIDE-RANGING COLLECTIONS. ADDITIONALLY, 10 SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS, 6 TOURING EXHIBITIONS AND 8 LONG-TERM INSTALLATIONS DEVELOPED AND EXTENDED CULTURAL AND ART HISTORICAL THEMES SUPPORTED BY THE MUSEUM'S RICH COLLECTIONS. FORM 990, SCHEDULE D, PART V, COLUMN (D), LINE 1E THE MUSEUM ADOPTED ASU-2016-14 DURING THE YEAR ENDED JUNE 30, 2017. IN ACCORDANCE WITH THAT STANDARD THE MUSEUM WAS REQUIRED TO RECORD A CUMULATIVE EFFECT ADJUSTMENT TO REFLECT UNDERWATER BALANCES WITHIN THE NET ASSETS WITH DONOR RESTRICTION CATEGORY. HISTORICALLY, SUCH LOSSES WERE REFLECTED WITHIN THE NET ASSETS WITHOUT DONOR RESTRICTION CATEGORY. FORM 990, SCHEDULE D, PART V, LINE 4 THE BOARD, IN COMPLIANCE WITH APPLICABLE STATE REGULATIONS, WILL APPROPRIATE AS MUCH ENDOWMENT RETURN FOR EXPENDITURES AS IS PRUDENT CONSIDERING THE MUSEUM'S LONG AND SHORT-TERM NEEDS, PRESENT AND ANTICIPATED FINANCIAL REQUIREMENTS, EXPECTED TOTAL RETURN ON ITS INVESTMENTS, PRICE-LEVEL TRENDS AND GENERAL ECONOMIC CONDITIONS. UNDER THE MUSEUM'S SPENDING POLICY AS OF FY20, A PERCENTAGE OF THE AVERAGE MARKET VALUE OF CERTAIN INVESTMENTS OVER THE TWENTY QUARTERS ENDING ON DECEMBER 31 IS MADE AVAILABLE ON EACH JULY 1 TO SUPPORT CURRENT OPERATIONS OF THE MUSEUM AND CERTAIN NON-OPERATING ACTIVITIES AS DESIGNATED BY THE BOARD. FORM 990, SCHEDULE D, PART X, LINE 2 FIN 48 THE MUSEUM FOLLOWS GUIDANCE THAT CLARIFIES THE ACCOUNTING FOR UNCERTAINTY IN TAX POSITIONS TAKEN OR EXPECTED TO BE TAKEN IN A TAX RETURN, INCLUDING ISSUES RELATING TO FINANCIAL STATEMENT RECOGNITION AND MEASUREMENT. THIS GUIDANCE PROVIDES THAT THE TAX EFFECTS FROM AN UNCERTAIN TAX POSITION CAN ONLY BE RECOGNIZED IN THE CONSOLIDATED FINANCIAL STATEMENTS IF THE POSITION IS "MORE-LIKELY-THAN-NOT" TO BE SUSTAINED IF THE POSITION WERE TO BE CHALLENGED BY A TAXING AUTHORITY. THE ASSESSMENT OF THE TAX POSITION IS BASED SOLELY ON THE TECHNICAL MERITS OF THE POSITION, WITHOUT REGARD TO THE LIKELIHOOD THAT THE TAX POSITION MAY BE CHALLENGED. THE MUSEUM IS EXEMPT FROM FEDERAL INCOME TAX UNDER IRC SECTION 501(C)(3), THOUGH IT IS SUBJECT TO TAX ON INCOME UNRELATED TO ITS EXEMPT PURPOSE, UNLESS THAT INCOME IS OTHERWISE EXCLUDED BY THE CODE. THE MUSEUM HAS PROCESSES PRESENTLY IN PLACE TO ENSURE THE MAINTENANCE OF ITS TAX-EXEMPT STATUS; TO IDENTIFY AND REPORT UNRELATED BUSINESS INCOME; TO DETERMINE ITS FILING AND TAX OBLIGATIONS IN JURISDICTIONS FOR WHICH IT HAS NEXUS; AND TO IDENTIFY AND EVALUATE OTHER MATTERS THAT MAY BE CONSIDERED TAX POSITIONS. THE MUSEUM HAS DETERMINED THAT THERE ARE NO MATERIAL UNCERTAIN TAX POSITIONS THAT REQUIRE RECOGNITION OR DISCLOSURE IN THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS. IN ADDITION, THE MUSEUM HAS NOT RECORDED A PROVISION FOR INCOME TAXES AS IT HAS NO MATERIAL TAX LIABILITY FROM UNRELATED BUSINESS INCOME ACTIVITIES. | Explanation | Daniller & Company is reported as one of the Museums top five highest paid vendors in Part VII of the Form 990; the amount reported there represents payment for all services (inclusive of management and project fees) provided by the Company, whereas the amount reported on Schedule G represents solely the amount paid for fundraising services. The Museum does not track its donation data in such a fashion as to pinpoint specifically how much each fundraiser raised on its behalf. Fundraisers make touchpoints with donors that may not result in contributions for years, nor does the Museum survey its donors to see what prompted them to donate to the Museum. Accordingly, the Museum does not report gorss receipts from fundraising activities in Schedule G, Part I, Line 2(b), column, IV. | ExplanationTxt |

| GENERAL EXPLANATORY STATEMENT REGARDING THE COVID-19 IMPACT ON | THE ORGANIZATION The first case of the novel strain of Coronavirus ("COVID-19") in the U.S. was confirmed in the state of New York on March 1, 2020. By the end of March, the number of COVID-19 deaths in New York City surpassed 1,000 and all non-essential businesses including the Brooklyn Museum were closed by order of the Governor. Through a number of emergency measures, by the end of June the Brooklyn Museum was able to limit the effect of the global health and financial crisis on its operating support and revenue to 14% of its annual average. The impact for the Museums employees, supporters, and community, however, will not be fully understood for years to come. In response to the pandemic, the Museum significantly reduced its annual expense base and its Board of Trustees contributed generously to a special reopening fund. The U.S. federal government passed the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act ("CARES Act") and during May 2020 the Museum successfully secured a Payroll Protection Program ("PPP") loan totaling $4,480,038 from the Small Business Administration. The PPP loan and accrued interest are forgivable as long as the Museum uses the loan proceeds for eligible purposes, primarily for payroll and benefits. The Museum will apply for loan forgiveness during the fiscal year ended June 30, 2021. On September 12, 2020 the Brooklyn Museum reopened to the public in accordance with State guidelines for social distancing and an operational plan approved by the Director of Infection Prevention at Mt. Sinai Hospital. The plan limited capacity to 25%, required patrons to wear a face covering, and included many operational precautions, such as advance ticket sales and employee health checks. Physical improvements were also made to the building, including new air filtration, Plexiglas protection, and signage. Despite the uncertainty the pandemic has created for the global economy-- and the toll it will continue to take on the Museums admissions and other earned income categories for years to come--the Museum is fortunate to have the crucial support of its generous and committed Board of Trustees. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Brooklyn Museum was required to cancel all of its in-person special event activities (such as its Annual gala). Many of the Museums generous donors who would have attended these events opted to donate the proceeds to the Museum rather than request a refund. For 990 purposes, the Museum is reporting donations attributable to canceled events in Part VIII, Line 1(f) and expenses incurred (that were non-reimbursable) on Part IX, Line 24, instead of reporting them on the Form 990, Schedule G.
