| Desc | General ProgramBring Me A Book brings the joy and power of books to children in under-resourced communitiesespecially the books they choose themselves. We believe that literacy as a civil right begins with defining oneself as a reader and choosing the books that help one strengthen identitysociocultural background, languages, values, perspectives, and developing knowledge of the world. When children possess the skills necessary to effectively evaluate and choose their own books, their ability to become engaged members of their communities and productive citizens is enhancedbenefiting humanity as a whole. In response to the pandemic Bring Me A Book significantly increased book distributions to provide new books and reading materials to children now required to shelter in place. Bring Me A Book pivoted and created a pilot program which shipped books directly to childrens homes, and began to transition workshops from in-person to online. Bring Me A Book also continued to provide books to schools, and local community non-profits and institutions particularly in East Palo Alto, Los Altos, and other Santa Clara County as well as San Mateo County communities. Our volunteers logged over 4000 hours.Service Club Speaker Book ProgramThe Speaker Appreciation program was developed for service clubs as a means of recognizing guest speakers at their regular meetings. Organizations order books from Bring Me A Book for children aged pre-school through third grade. The club asks the guest speakers to sign a bookplate that identifies the organization and explains that the book will be given to children at under-resourced sites such as classrooms, clinic waiting rooms, hospitals, or any public place that children frequent with their parents.Book BuddiesThe Book Buddy program serves preschool, transitional Kindergarten, Kindergarten and first grade students. Classrooms are low-income, including Head Start, state funded Child Development Centers, community-based nonprofit preschools and Title I schools. Students engage in a read aloud time with learning extension activities along with their trained Book Buddy. The Book Buddy gifts hardcover books to the classroom library and each student receives 2 hardcover books in English or Spanish to keep at home. Book CubbiesBook cubbies are distributed through the Family Book Cubby Workshops. The partners in these events are the preschools/schools that have Book Buddies or other nonprofits that serve low-income communities and foster children.
