The Stark Foundation carries out this mandate, in part, through the programs of the Stark Museum of Art, the W.H. Stark House, the Frances Ann Lutcher Theater for the Performing Arts, and the Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center. Through the operation of these venues, the Stark Foundation contributes historical, artistic, environmental, and cultural resources to the area and provides the community and region with opportunities for study and enjoyment of the arts, history, and nature. The Foundation seeks to encourage and assist education through grants and through the Miriam Lutcher Stark Contest in Reading and Declamation, a qualified scholarship program for public high school students in Orange County, Texas. Lutcher Stark Foundation established a new Stark Cultural Venues ("SCV") brand identity, which formally tied together Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center, the Stark Museum of Art, and The W.H. Stark House. The reorganization established the Stark Art and History Venues ("A&H"), which combined operations of the Stark Museum of Art ("SMA"), The W.H. Stark House ("House"), the SMA Library ("Library"), and the Stark Foundation Archive ("Archive"). Additionally, this reorganization consolidated management of the A&H venues under one director. While the A&H Venue budgets and staff offices are tied to the specific venues (Museum, House, Library, and Archive), the staff was reorganized into five functional groups that connect across the venues: administration, curatorial, collections, exhibitions, and education. Free Admission to Stark Cultural Venues:General admissions to all Stark Cultural Venue programming are free and open to the public. Lutcher Theater Inc. charges admissions to its show program events. Some special programming may require a fee to offset special material and supply costs. All school groups receive free admission to the SCV. Direct Charitable ActivitiesForm 990-PF, Part VIII-A, Line 1STARK ART & HISTORY VENUES 2021 IMPACT REPORTINTROThis report highlights the 2021 activities of the Stark Art & History Venues (A&H): the Stark Museum of Art; The W.H. Stark House, including the Stark Reading Contest; and the Eunice R. Benckenstein Library & Archive. Details about each Venue are organized in three sections: Attendance, Programming, and General Operations. In 2021 the evolving Pandemic kept staff thinking outside of the box on how best to provide service to our community while keeping people safe. A few examples include: - Reorganizing the Stark Museum of Art exhibitions schedule for 2021 and 2022- Pivoting to turn planned onsite student experiences to virtual field trips for the Fall- Evaluating The W.H. Stark House operating model of 40 years and developing a new model for making the history and property accessible with the available staffing and resourcesAdditionally, the staff continued research and discussion about how best to meaningfully incorporate the national conversations about Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Inclusion (DEAI) into our work for our community. Staff engaged the Stark Art & History Community Advisory Council (CAC) and program participants in these conversations. Discussions led to reframing our work around 3 priorities: - Center Community- Inspire Curiosity- Champion Multiple PerspectivesThese priorities are considered and reflected in all aspects of A & H to help make offered exhibitions and experiences relevant, engaging, and reflective of the broad community we serve.Over the course of the year, the Stark Art & History Venues team proudly served over 151,411 people through a combination of on-site, outreach, and virtual content. The total reach is actually larger as this number does not reflect general Venue website visits, such as to explore at home resources and watch YouTube videos. Those statistics are tracked by the Stark Foundation Marketing and Public Relations department and available in the Foundation impact infographic.STARK MUSEUM OF ARTATTENDANCEThe Stark Museum of Art served 134,557 people in 2021. This number includes walk-in visitors, program participants, and eMuseum views. The Museum hosted 2,162 walk-in visitors. The Museum offers a number of tools to enhance their experience, including scavenger hunts, video content, and audio content through QR codes. Walk-in visitors spent a total of 1,600 hours visiting the Museum galleries. 52 % of walk-in visitors were visiting SMA for the first time. Primary visitation came from SETX, SWLA, and the Houston area. The Museum also welcomed visitors from across the states including Alaska and Hawaii. To encourage walk-in visitation in 2021, SMA offered promotions such as a themed gift card drawing for the Rolling Art exhibition and a staff and Art & History CAC walk-in visitor challenge. The Stark Museum of Art served 97,652 people through on-site, outreach, and virtual programming in 2021. Details on the range of program offerings and attendance are below.Additionally, eMuseum, the digital collections access platform, was viewed 34,743 times over the course of the year. A significant number of views were related to The West as Home exhibition featured objects. PROGRAMMINGEducation & Public ProgramsThe Stark Museum of Art Education Department worked hard to anticipate demand for on-site and virtual offerings as the COVID situation evolved. In the spring, staff developed a 40-page catalog highlighting 29 program offerings for Pre-K-12 schools in the 2021-2022 academic year: 14 curriculum based onsite field trips, 9 curriculum-based virtual field trip programs, 2 onsite student art exhibitions, 3 teacher workshops, and a new downloadable version of the mural program. Over the summer in response to increasing COVID cases, staff pivoted to exclusively offer virtual field trips through 2021 and prepare a relaunch of on-site programs in the first quarter of 2022. The Education Department served 44 different campus sites included public and private schools as well as preschools and daycares. Approximately half of the campuses served were from Orange County. Program participants were also from Texas Educational Region 4, 5, 7,10; Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana; and Kentucky, Washington, and California.During the month of July, the education department returned to offering on-site teacher professional development by scheduling 3 workshop topics over 5 days. Based on huge demand, staff expanded to 12 days of classes and doubled the number of teacher participants. The staff continued their commitment to outreach by developing kits for summer local library programs, the Boys and Girls Club, Orange County students participating in the summer feeding programs, and foster families. They also expanded the virtual program opportunities through development of Mediation Moments, a voting activity for selecting Audubon images on view, and through partnering with outside organizations to explore Western Art collections and collecting during Lunch & Look @ Home programs. Beginning in August, education staff began the relaunch of in-person, onsite programs with our Adult Studio Workshop programs. Sold-out workshops took place in August, November, and December. Additionally, education staff facilitated 5 studio workshops in December for Stark Foundation Employees.School (including virtual, mural @ home, exhibitions, kit-based) - 22,865- Virtual Field Trip Kits - 11,631- Mural @ Home - 3,522- Onsite School Programs - 72- Juried Student Art Entries - 296- Art: It's Elementary Entries - 36 - Virtual Juried Student Art Exhibition - 5,331- Virtual Art: It's Elementary Exhibition - 1,925- Teacher Workshops serving 52 teachers over 12 days - 480 hours of CPE creditsPublic Programs (including kit-based) - 681- Art Quest @ Home - 200- Playdate Crates - 168- Onsite Programs (Adult Studios, Opening Reception) - 213- WHSH Summer Reading Program - 100Public Outreach Programs - 1,621- Summer Library Program Kits - 185- Boys & Girls Club - 510- Summer Creativity Kits - 859- Golden Triangle Foster Family Association - 67Virtual Public Programs - 72,458- 7 Lunch & Look @ Home Programs (Registration & Views) - 2,963- 12 Meditation Moments programs - 6,873- 51 #MakeArtMonday programs - 56,607- Arts in Education Week - 778- Museum Week - 5,116 - Audubon paper switch public voting program - 121Additional Museum Programming- Interviewed, filmed and created The West as Home: Linda Lomahaftewa video for the special exhibition The West as Home- Collaborated with the Couse-Sharp Historic Site in Taos, NM on the production of a video for the special exhibition The West as Home- Curated SMA Playlists for gallery interpretation: Rolling Art (2 playlists), The West as Home (1 playlist), Reframing the West (1 playlist), Picturing the Wild West (1 playlist)- Teaching Artist created 13 coloring sheets for a Stark Cultural Venues Coloring Book 1000 books handed out, plus website downloads- Exhibited poster prints of the artwork from the Stark Cultural Venues Coloring BookEXHIBITIONSThe Exhibition Department also adjusted plans in response to the Pandemic. A number of exhibitions were rescheduled to encourage more visitation as COVID protocols loosened up. The Museum exhibitions were featured in the Glasstire: Texas Visual Arts News and Reviews e-newsletter, a resource for the Texas Art Community. Virtual tours of the Museum's 5 galleries and lobby (1 1/2 -2 minutes each) were available via links. Additionally, local media personality Jackie Simien taped interviews about The West as Home exhibition with the Curator and the Director, Exhibitions & Collection. These specialty story videos were released via the Museum's Facebook page.To further efforts to center the community in exhibitions development, the Art & History CAC and staff explored exhibition galleries to reflect, discuss, and document whether or not the spaces as installed inspired curiosity and reflected multiple perspectives. A lively and candid discussion about the galleries themselves, specific artwork hung in the spaces, and associated intended and unintended interpretation, helped staff consider and develop changes for Gallery 2, a complete reinterpretation and reinstallation of Gallery 3, and a model for future exhibitions.Preparation for exhibitions included: gallery layout and design, graphic design (Exhibitions); extensive matting and framing, interactive technology design and testing (Exhibitions); interactive furniture design and construction (Exhibitions); label and panel production (Exhibitions/Collections); checklist development, layout, and extensive label research and writing (Curatorial); and educational programming and curricula (Education). Staff also work with the building services, security, and marketing departments during exhibition development.Spirit of Bethlehem: The Boehm Porcelain Nativity (November 18, 2020 - January 8, 2021)The exhibit celebrated the holiday season. Sixteen porcelain figures depicted the Christmas story. It presented the tradition of the crche, or manger scene. The Drawing Experience (February 15, 2020 - March 20, 2021)Visitors immersed themselves in the world of drawing in this exhibition. Direct Charitable ActivitiesForm 990-PF, Part VIII-A, Line 2THE W.H. STARK HOUSE, INCLUDING THE MIRIAM LUTCHER STARK CONTEST IN READING AND DECLAMATIONAccess to the Stark House continued to be impacted by COVID throughout the year. In response House staff developed and released a catalog of virtual history programs in the Spring. In addition, staff fine-tuned the Summer Reading program and hosted a new outdoor launch event, ran a modified version of the 117th Stark Reading Contest, developed and piloted new STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) programming, piloted new models for volunteer engagement, and co-curated a House-focused exhibition tied to the Museum's The West as Home exhibition. The W.H. Stark House tour model had been in place since the House opened for tours in 1981. In 2021, the House had multiple closures due to COVID-19 and then the necessity of working around ongoing physical limitations of the site. This prompted staff to evaluate the standing operating model, including available resources and program successes. As a result, they developed a new operations model for The W.H. Stark House. The new model shifts the focus from the 45-minute guided tour program to a more dynamic and holistic model based on monthly offerings of events and programs. Endorsed by administration in the early fall 2021, this model emphasizes working with community partners to increase engagement and provide more consistent access to the site and its history. Upon administrative approval, the staff communicated internally about the change in model. They also engaged the Marketing and Public Relations department in developing a marketing plan to announce the changes to the community-at-large. Plans include release of a 2022 monthly calendar of activities and increased content on The W.H. Stark House website, featuring new detailed virtual tours of the interior. ATTENDANCEThe W.H. Stark House served a total of 16,854 people through on-site, outreach, and virtual activities. GENERAL OPERATIONSCollectionsThroughout the year collections staff continued 2019 House inventory follow up. Collections staff and House staff established a strategy for setting rooms to support filming spaces for virtual content and limited tours. They also addressed a number of access and storage issues in preparation for the House repainting and reroofing projects. In addition, staff made large strides in removing non-collections decorative items, such as fake florals and food, from the house proper to better utilize the limited storage space. Acquisitions- The W.H. Stark House acquired 1 object, a brass bed frame that Henry Jacob Lutcher owned and used in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.Deaccessions- Two items were deaccessioned from the WHSH collection in 2021. These items were not disposed of, but will serve as exhibition furniture.- Several items were removed from the On-Deposit collection associated with The W.H. Stark House. Two items were formally transferred to the Eunice R. Benckenstein Library and Archive, one was transferred to the WHSH education collection, one was removed from On Deposit to serve as exhibition furniture, and one item, damaged during the 2019 HVAC leak, was destroyed due to the irrecoverable damage caused to it by the leak. Conservation- Nine (9) items from the WHSH collection, damaged in the 2019 HVAC leak, returned in September 2021 from treatment by Conserving Threads of Dallas, Texas. The items include rugs, a tablecloth, and a rocking chair.TMS Database- Collections staff completed cataloguing 637 objects found in collection during the 2019 WHSH inventory onsite in The W.H. Stark House. The process includes photographing, measuring, and conducting a basic condition assessment of each object. This is an ongoing project, with cataloging estimated to be complete in 2022.Photography- Photographer Tom DuBrock also spent a half day at the WHSH photographing room settings, architectural features, and decorative elements of the House interior. His work resulted in 17 high resolution photographs for use in virtual tours and on the House website.Physical Care of the Collections - To aid in collections care, collections staff reorganized the Kitchen/Prep room on the first floor of the Stark House. Staff also established an inventory for packing supplies to support the ongoing rehousing efforts. The rehousing project continues with a multi-phase approach of identifying areas where objects are currently stored but would be better served residing in the art storage vaults at SMA. Southeast Texas Storm Season- Annually staff update the Hurricane Preparedness and Recovery document in May and review and restock preparedness supplies. 2021 was a calmer storm season than 2020, and did not necessitate any major object movements. Direct Charitable ActivitiesForm 990-PF, Part VIII-A, Line 32021 SHANGRI LA BOTANICAL GARDENS AND NATURE CENTER ANNUAL REPORTINTRODUCTIONIn 2021, Shangri La Gardens was reeling with the continued unpredictability of events as we all continued to manage the pandemic created by the exponential spread of COVID-19. Like most other organizations, our staff continued to spend time working remotely, finding new ways to be in our community, and striving to uphold one another and our work. While Shangri La Gardens maintained a modified daily visitation schedule during the first part of 2021, staff remained very busy with a range of activities and projects associated with a late winter deep freeze recovery and general garden maintenance; targeted public events conducted by Shangri La Gardens staff in support of the Stark Foundation's commitment to education and community engagement; and extensive virtual programming by the Education Department to serve the schools of Orange County and surrounding areas. The commitment of the Stark Foundation and many dedicated staff members was showcased, to ensure that community programs and events would continue to succeed, despite the numerous challenges encountered in response to the unpredictability of the COVID-19 pandemic. We are deeply grateful for the universal support, encouragement, and flexibility from the entire Foundation community. We are pleased to present the 2021 Annual Report for Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center. This report highlights the accomplishments of our dedicated and talented team of staff who, despite significant challenges, were able to directly engage 53,018 individuals through Onsite Curriculum-based School Programs, Family Programming, Adult Programming, Virtual Programming, Signature Events, and General Visitation during 2021. ATTENDANCEGENERAL VISTATIONA quick review of January 1 to December 22, 2021 shows that Shangri La Gardens recorded 24,874 general garden and group tour visitors. Initially, due to the number of COVID-19 cases in our area, the gardens were open Wednesday through Friday with the recommendation that guests obtain a timed ticket to reduce the chances of crowding. As the number of COVID-19 cases decreased, Shangri La Gardens resumed regular hours Tuesday through Saturday beginning March 16th. Our first Harris County Group Tour arrived on June 22nd after Harris County began to allow 50 percent capacity on their buses. Timed ticketing remained in effect through the fall season as we continuously adjusted operations to accommodate the trends in COVID-19. These adjustments not only helped to reduce crowding, especially during high-volume events, but aimed to keep interaction between staff, volunteers, and visitors to a minimum. The pandemic was not the only force that shook attendance; Winter Storm Uri froze out staff and visitors from February 15th through 20th and consequently disrupted popular garden attractions such as the azalea blooms, and the mating and nesting season of migratory birds on Ruby Lake. Fortunately, by late spring, no traces of Uri were noticed by the untrained eye and visitation resumed as normal. As pandemic conditions improved throughout the year with more persons becoming vaccinated and improved testing site availability; new CDC guidelines opened the door for what seemed to be a normal fall and winter season of public programming and events, and in some cases allowed for record-breaking attendance. SIGNATURE PUBLIC EVENTS Virtual 26th Annual Community Trash-OffWhile we knew that the INVISTA Sponsored and Shangri La Gardens hosted Community Trash-off was a popular way to get involved and make a difference, in light of the impact of COVID-19, as well as recommendations from the Stark Foundation and government leadership, we shifted to a virtual program format. On Saturday, February 27th we hosted our 2021 Virtual Community Trash-Off. While we would have loved to come together for a day of community service and fellowship, the safety of our community members was paramount. Each participant was given their own kit of tools to effectively participate in the clean-up efforts throughout their community, not for just one day, but year-round. Each Trash-Off kit contained: one reusable bag, a trash grabber, a safety vest, a reusable pair of gloves, garbage bags, and a bottle of water. Our hope was to empower our community to continue clean-up efforts year-round by providing the basic tools required for the job. As a community, 316 people collected approximately 60 cubic tons of trash. Eco-Fest and Butterfly ReleaseIn 2021, the Shangri La Gardens Eco-Fest: Blooms and Butterflies was a way to acknowledge and celebrate Earth Day. This multiday family-friendly event featured engaging, self-facilitated activities, as well as multiple butterfly releases. Guests were gifted a low maintenance pollinator-friendly plant to create their own 'butterfly garden' at their home, as well as an accompanying informational care sheets highlighting the importance of pollinators and pollinator plants. Our goal was to have each person walk away from Eco-Fest with a new perspective of their natural world. Spreading the activities of this event over a three-day period allowed us to continue to foster these personal nature-based experiences while keeping those in our community safe. 1,286 guests attended this Entergy sponsored event.National Public Gardens Week & National Pollinator WeekIn 2021, we celebrated National Public Gardens Week, a special time for public gardens to emphasize the importance gardens play in community enrichment, environmental responsibility, sustainable practices, and more. Through this celebration, we encourage the general public to visit, engage, donate, and volunteer. This year, each group who visited the gardens received beautiful pollinator-friendly plants, a plant care card with tips on how to plant their pollinator garden, and a packet of native wildflower seeds. A total of 1,451 visitors came out to help us celebrate during the week and over 1,000 plants found new homes. For National Pollinator Week, we invited each of our 437 visitors to grow their very own pollinator-friendly garden by providing them with our Understanding Butterflies: A Road Map to Successful Butterfly Gardening guide and a packet of pollinator-friendly wildflower seeds to jump start their project. Through this event, we aim to teach the public about the significance of pollinators and give them the confidence to make a positive impact beginning in their own backyards.Scarecrow FestivalIn 2021, the 11th Annual Scarecrow Festival was a great success with 10,269 visitors, including several group tours, and Scarecrow Walk school fieldtrips. Over the course of the month-long event, visitors from all over explored 52 unique scarecrow exhibits installed by our creative community members. Each year, the festival theme focuses on "environmentally friendly" scarecrows made from recycled and/or reused items and inspires friendly competition amongst participants. Notably, for the 2021 festival we sought to add a virtual element by opening voting to not only visitors, but to those at home who may have been quarantined or unable to travel. All votes were cast electronically on our website or via QR code at the gardens, and winners were announced via a special Facebook Live broadcast at Autumn Fair. Autumn FairOur 2021 Autumn Fair was an incredible success. We had 940 members of our community visit to participate in exciting self-guided fall festivities. Autumn Fair offered multiple educational opportunities for guests to interact with nature through take home crafts and self-facilitated games and activities. Activity books served as the guide for each guest, explaining the various opportunities throughout the Gardens. Christmas Strolls & Community Food DriveThe 2021 Christmas Strolls and Community Food Drive event boasted record-breaking attendance, many of whom were first time guests. Over nine evenings, we welcomed 17,479 visitors with the last night of Strolls totaling 4,834 alone. This family-friendly event supported two non-profit groups; monetary and non-perishable food donations were made to Orange Christian Services totaling $6,451 and 10,179 pounds, and $6,452.38 was earned by the Orange Lions Club through the selling of drinks and snacks. We were extremely grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with these local charities. Christmas Strolls also served as the perfect opportunity for visitors to enjoy the 50 community-decorated Christmas trees that were installed throughout the gardens. Decorate-a-Tree participants are encouraged to decorate their trees using mostly recycled materials and each year they showcase outstanding creations for the community to enjoy during the month of December. This year's Community Decorate-a-Tree event was generously sponsored by International Paper.Dreaming of a Green ChristmasOur 2021 Dreaming of a Green Christmas included an opportunity for families to create Christmas tree ornaments from natural materials, and a wreath-making program for adults. 440 guests stopped by the Nature Discovery Lab to create a one-of-a-kind ornament for their family Christmas tree. A full house of 12 enthusiastic adults enjoyed the wreath-making workshop, building their own wreaths from fresh greenery, and other decorative materials.PROGRAMMINGWhile 2021 continued to be a unique and challenging time for the Shangri La Gardens' Education Department, it was also a time of continued innovative education techniques, and redesigned and redeveloped
