Through research and education we empower citizens to be a strong voice for a clean and healthful environment, open and accountable government, and strong consumer protections. FORM 990-EZ, PART III, PROGRAM SERVICE ACCOMPLISHMENTS:The MontPIRG Leadership Fund is Creating Positive, Tangible ChangeThe MontPIRG Leadership Fund is dedicated to training the next generation of civic leaders through hands-on advocacy. We take on the important issues facing Montana by pushing work to protect our environment and advance clean energy, empowering young voters, and defending consumer rights. This year we took on a number of exciting campaigns to move Montana forward and train young leaders with the tools to create change. Below we will highlight a few of those important efforts. LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENTFor over forty years, MontPIRG and the MontPIRG Leadership Fund have cultivated, trained and developed Montanas next generation of civic leaders. Ensuring young leaders have the skills necessary to affect change for years to come is the MontPIRG Leadership Funds most important work. Based at the University of Montana (UM) and Montana State University (MSU), every semester we train and graduate a class of student interns who learn the leadership skills to create change in their community, state, nation and world. Interns learn by engaging in hands-on work on campus and across the state. During their time with the MontPIRG Leadership Fund they learn basic organizing skills including canvassing, door knocking, phone calling, event organizing, and campaign planning. In addition to the work they do in the field these young leaders are trained in campaign management, fundraising, communications, lobbying, running for office and much more through weekly classes. These tools not only help them achieve their goals as an intern, but are transferable to future work. In 2021, MontPIRG recruited and trained 39 interns between Missoula and Bozeman. Our interns dedicate at least 10 hour per week over a semester to learning new skills which they put to use on real campaigns that move Montana forward. They immerse themselves fully and are each assigned an individual project in which they must use their newly acquired skills to complete. Our methodical, tested, and detailed internship program builds new organizers any campaign, non-profit or business would eagerly pursue. Our interns and volunteers have gone on to be elected officials, non-profit leaders, business executives, and successful presidential campaign managers. VOTER ENGAGEMENTEmpowering Young VotersVoting is the first rung on the civic engagement ladder and ensuring young Montanans have their voices heard at the ballot box is a crucial part of the MontPIRG Leadership Funds work. MontPIRG voter registration tables are a ubiquitous presence at the MSU and UM campuses, and students know they can depend on our volunteers, interns and board members to update their voter registration or register to vote for the first time. For many students this is their first interaction with MontPIRG and a great way to make them aware of work. The MontPIRG Leadership Fund also does voter registration off campus in the Missoula and Bozeman communities, at farmers markets, First Friday Art Walks and other local events. In addition to in-person field work to register young voters, the MontPIRG Leadership Fund also employs less traditional tactics including an online voter registration portal (mtpirg.org/register) and voter registration drop boxes. Drop boxes are sprinkled throughout the Missoula and Bozeman communities at coffee shops, bars and grocery stores. Using these methods, the MontPIRG Leadership Fund registered 5,612 voters for the 2020 Election and 1,026 for the 2021 Municipal Elections. In addition to registering young voters, MontPIRG knows getting out the vote is equally important. In addition to obtaining approximately 1,103 pledges to vote from young voters for the 202o Election, we also made 73,323 Get Out the Vote (GOTV) calls to remind young people across Montana to vote in that historic election. Similarly, in 2021, we made 2,169 GOTV calls and knocked 4,048 doors in Missoula and Bozeman for the local municipal elections. DEFENDING OUR OUTDOORSBlackfoot Clearwater Stewardship ActIn the Summer of 2021, MontPIRG organized and executed a statewide canvass to educate Montanans on the importance of passing the Blackfoot Clearwater Stewardship Act (BCSA) which would expand federal protection of the Bob MarshallWilderness and the surrounding area to further timber, recreation, and conservation goals. The bill adds an additional 80,000 acres to the Bob Marshall, Scapegoat, and Mission Mountains Wilderness Areas; opens 2,013 acres for snowmobile access and 3,800 acres for hiker and mountain bike access; calls for an updated comprehensive trail plan for snowmobilers; enhances timber and forest protection around Seeley lake; and requests that the National Forest Service study new recreation opportunities made available by these protection expansions. MontPIRG has a strong history of supporting policy that protects our wild places and the BCSA does just that. For the canvass, MontPIRG knocked on approximately 13,131 doors in Missoula, Bozeman, Helena, Billings, Kalispell and Whitefish, talking with folks about the BCSA and what it means for Montana. MontPIRG also had sixteen letters to the editor published in various Montana newspapers and collected 2,495 comments in support of passing the BCSA. These comments were then delivered to Senator Jon Tester, to show Montanans support this important legislation.
