DescAdult basic education center dedicated to the needs of adult learners in Wabash County and surrounding communities. Program areas include basic literacy instruction, high school equivalency diploma instruction, high school equivalency exam testing, workforce readiness skills enhancement, and transition into post-secondary education and training. In 2021, Learn More Center continued our mission of assisting adults with High School Equivalency Diploma attainment; we continued to advance basic literacy skills in reading, mathematics, writing, and digital literacy. While we saw lower numbers in our program than the last few previous years, those students that enrolled saw success in spite of the multiple barriers that many of them faced. Transportation barriers, lack of childcare, significant learning differences, and family challenges all had to be addressed to attain success. We had 30 students attain their High School Equivalency Diplomas. We had 60 students advance their skills at least one measurable level. We had at least 30 students gain a certification, transition into college, and/or secure a new job. Our students are experiencing more than one gain and are moving into better futures. Our focus for the future will be to continue our high quality educational program and work to increase student recruitment. In Wabash County and surrounding areas, there are over 2,000 working age adults that do not yet have their high school diploma or equivalency. When we add the numbers of those who graduated, but do not have the skills necessary to successfully complete post-secondary training and/or college degrees, we see our estimate double. Our county's Strategic Plan includes the need for a skilled workforce and Learn More Center is an integral and effective part of meeting our area's workforce and educational needs.Desc

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 5In 2022 the organization became aware that a former employee had intentionally diverted approximately $25,000 of the organization's resources for his personal gain, through fraudulent checks and expense reimbursements. The financial staff detected the diversion and promptly brought it to the attention of the Director and the Executive Committee of the Board. The organization took aggressive action. A special board committee was immediately created and an intensive internal investigation was completed. A police report was filed and an official investigation was opened. The organization's insurance company hired a forensic accountant who confirmed the diversion. The organization received an insurance settlement of $15,000, the coverage limit under the policy. Felony charges were filed against the former employee, who plead guilty. The court has ordered restitution in the amount of $10,000. A comprehensive review of financial policies and procedures was completed. More stringent controls (particularly in the areas of security over cash and checks, account reconciliation, separation of duties and expense reimbursement), monitoring of controls, and increased financial oversight have been implemented to mitigate risk of potential future occurrences.

At orientation and annually thereafter, each decision-maker will disclose relevant interests and affiliations to the President of the Board. A decision-maker with a conflict of interest on a matter before the board shall recuse himself/herself from the voting process. If the governing board or committee determines that a decision-maker has failed to disclose an actual or possible conflict of interest, it shall take appropriate disciplinary and corrective action. And then the board president is responsible to ensure that conflicts of interest are managed in accordance with this policy.
