GENERAL OPERATIONSNew Operating Model - The W.H. Stark House tour model had been in place since the House opened for tours in 1981. The new model shifts the focus from a 45-minute guided tour program to a more dynamic and holistic model based on monthly programs and events. - Staff proceeded with a soft launch of the new programming model in January as WHSH exterior painting and roofing projects were in process. - The new model was presented to the Board at February 24, 2022 meeting. Board members enthusiastically endorsed the approach (previously endorsed by Foundation management in late 2021). - This operating model utilizes community volunteers to help facilitate the programs. In June, August, and December members of the A & H Community Advisory Council helped facilitate Open House Events. In June students from the West Orange High School Theater Department (some also participate in the SRC) dressed as characters from Midsommer Night's Dream and helped facilitate activities for the WHSH Summer Reading Festival. WHSH volunteers and Rotary Volunteers were also on hand to help support WHSH Programs. - WHSH staff job descriptions were reviewed and amended and offices and non-collections storage were reconfigured to support this model. Research and other WHSH related projects- In advance of sale, documented the Front Street building with photos, 360 filming, interview with Walter G. Riedel and took photos of the Baptist Church building. - Conducted research in the ERB Library & Archive and WHSH House collections to support program efforts including documents tied to family travel and Orange military history. - Updated restoration and preservation history of WHSH property to ensure it is current through mid-year 2022. - Worked with Library & Records Manager to review and outline best way to consolidate wide variety of research materials and documentation about WHSH and other Foundation owned structures. - Began exploring collaborative program opportunities with the creators of Bridge City's STEM Bus. The STEM Bus will feature mobile labs and experiments for all age groups at events throughout the community and is set for completion in Spring 2023. The W.H. Stark House will collaborate with Bridge City high school students and instructors to create labs based on the area's lumber history as well as early technology and craftsmanship featured in The W.H. Stark House. Collections - Exterior Preservation Projects The scaffolding remained around The W.H. Stark House into the Spring as the exterior painting and roofing projects continued. Painters from Lansdale Painting and Wall Covering in Buna completed most of the painting prior to removal of the damaged roof and installation of the new roof by Hampshire Roofing Company of Lumberton. After the roof installation was completed, painters did final touch up around the exterior and painted the porches of the House. In addition, the painters repainted the exterior of the Carriage House. - Photography: Tom DuBrock, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston photographer In June, photographed fourteen (14) objects at the House including wall fabric and other architectural details In November, photographed (3) objects from the WHSH collection. Hurricane Prep Annual hurricane season photos were taken by the Registration Assistant and CPO of all interior and exterior spaces of WHSH property - Physical Care of the Collections In the interest of bettering the care of the Stark House collections, Exhibitions and Collections staff identified several locations in the Stark House that are currently used as collections storage but should not be used as collections storage. They prioritized the Guest Bedroom Bathroom and the Guest Bedroom Closet. The Director, Exhibitions & Collections, and the Exhibitions & Collections Assistant packed objects in boxes while the Registrar and Registration Assistant checked already packed boxes and transferred these boxes to the museum in several trips over the course of about six months. Overall seven hundred fifty-two (752) objects were moved out of the Guest Bedroom Bathroom and Closet and to SMA Art Storage. - Acquisitions/Accessions No objects were acquired for or accessioned to the WHSH Collection in 2022. - Spot Audits/Inventory As noted in the Museum section collections and accounting staff undertook an SMA full building inventory. In addition to SMA collections storage, the Museum houses WHSH collections storage which was reviewed as part of this inventory project. Spot Audits were conducted at the House in June and in November as part of regular collections care protocol. - Southeast Texas Storm Season o Annually staff update the Hurricane Preparedness and Recovery document in May and review and restock preparedness supplies. 2022 was a calm storm season for this region and did not necessitate any major object movements. - Additional Exhibitions and Collections Projects 2019 inventory follow up continued. On December 20, 2022, the final OD items from the 2019 WHSH Inventory were cataloged and photographed, such that all of the over 1,250 OD objects from the 2019 WHSH Inventory have been cataloged and photographed. As part of this follow-up, eleven (11) object records were moved to the Deleted department as the records were created either in error, did not represent a physical object, or were duplicate records for objects in the permanent collection. Three (3) additional object records were deleted as the objects were purchased for the House as exhibition props. These objects have been tagged as such to avoid this problem in the future. One (1) object record was flagged as missing. Of the items noted as Missing during the 2019 WHSH Inventory, two of these items were located during the 2022 SMA Inventory. EUNICE R. Direct Charitable ActivitiesForm 990-PF, Part VIII-A, Line 32022 SHANGRI LA BOTANICAL GARDENS AND NATURE CENTER ANNUAL REPORT INTRODUCTION In late April 2022, Angela "Angie" Mason joined the team as the Executive Director bringing 20 years of public garden experience to Shangri La. A new perspective brought many changes with many more to come. The year started with imagining Ruby Lake Island, bringing Holiday Magic and Free State Cellars to our Christmas Strolls, restructuring teams and building a grounds crew. The goal of all of the changes was to elevate the guest experience when visiting Shangri La for school programs, general visitation and special events. We are pleased to present the 2022 Annual Report for Shangri La Gardens and Nature Center. The report highlights some of the accomplishments of the year and the hard work and dedication of our staff. The garden welcomed 75,137 guests this year through onsite programming, special events and the new and improved Christmas Strolls. HORTICULTURE and GROUNDS We began 2022 with our first hard freeze of the season right after New Year's Day. Frost tender perennials were pruned back to encourage new growth in the spring following a winter dormancy period. We mulched heavily and covered the more sensitive subtropical plants when temperatures continued to dip below freezing. Late winter is a great time of year to view camellias and bulbs blooming throughout the garden. As temperatures warm, azaleas, magnolias, and irises burst into bloom to herald the spring. Spring maintenance includes shearing hollies, trimming back aquatic plants, weeding, and changing out annuals. Winter annuals are removed to make room for new bedding that will grow and bloom until September. As we transitioned into summer, we had no lack of weather-related challenges as a heat wave and drought set in. The hardworking garden team made sure the plantings were getting enough water via irrigation and hand watering. Mid to late summer garden maintenance includes trimming perennials to encourage more growth and flowers into the fall. This also includes pruning the suckers and non-flowering shoots from the azaleas. This type of pruning produces branches that are sturdier and more vigorous for next spring's blooms.Preparing for fall planting begins in late August. With Scarecrow Festival starting in October, we get the garden ready with new annuals and nearly 5,000 pumpkins and gourds. With the unseasonably warm autumn, many of the winter crops for the last annual bedding change of the year were finishing ahead of schedule. We also assisted in readying spaces in the garden for Christmas Strolls, Community Decorate-a-Tree, the Volunteer Christmas Party, as well as decorating the Exhibition Greenhouses with colorful poinsettias.By the end of the year, the gardening team had planted 37,414 annual plants for displays throughout the garden. 2022 Garden Renovations - Exhibition Greenhouses RenovationFollowing the 2021 Christmas Strolls, the greenhouses closed to begin the first phase of renovation. Large plants and vines in the Display Greenhouse were given a much-needed trim and new colorful and unique plants were added to the beds that flank the fountains. New aquatic plants were added to the water features. The Epiphyte House required much more effort due to the decaying cypress tree armatures that began to disturb displays and pose safety hazards. Trees were reused and repositioned, where possible, and the ground layer planting utilized some existing original plantings accented with more colorful bromeliads, ferns, tropicals, and orchids. The greenhouses reopened in early spring on April 1st. With the hiring of our new Horticulturist, plantings have continued to evolve with many rare and unusual tropicals on showcase.- Bog GardenAn existing bed at the Pond of the Blue Moon was renovated into a bog garden. This area is perfect for moisture- loving plants such as Cardinal Flower (Lobelia cardinalis), Neches River Rosemallow (Hibiscus dasycalyx), White Rain Lilies (Zephyranthes candida), Creeping Jenny (Lysimachia congestiflora), and various carnivorous Pitcher Plant hybrids (Sarracenia hybrids). We also took the opportunity to showcase a few small pieces from Lutcher Stark's petrified wood collection in this space. More plants, including more carnivorous plants, are slated to be added to the space in the Spring of 2023.- Entrance LandscapeAs part of improving the visitor experience, especially upon entering the garden from the pedestrian crosswalk, the first phase of renovation took place in the early fall. A thicket of Yaupon (Ilex vomitoria) and some invasive trees and shrubs were removed for a much cleaner look. We look forward to adding colorful shrubs, trees, and natives in future months.- Ruby Lake Improvement projectIn May of 2022, it was decided we would build an island and plant large cypress trees instead of going the route of fiberglass nesting structures. A 300' x 40' island was created in June by bringing in over 1200 loads of clay. The island was topped off with muck from Ruby Lake and then tarped to solarize the soil. This project includes improvements to the water quality in Ruby Lake, Duck Pond and Pond of the Blue Moon. We started with removing over 10 truckloads of pond weeds from Beaver Pond, Duck Pond and Ruby Lake, then applied microbes and other beneficial amendments to the water to break down a 4' layer of muck, in addition we added new diffusers to increase oxygen. In November, 16 - 30' tall Cypress were planted. More understory plantings will happen in 2023. The hope is to re-establish nesting areas for the many migratory birds that visit Shangri La. The Bird Blind was also cleaned up and allows for better viewing of Ruby Lake. Plantings around the Bird Blind will be reminiscent of Lutcher Stark's favorite plants. This will tie in to future garden renovations and expansions. While building the island, space was cleared along one of the original shell roads to make way for the future "Heritage Trail". Soil amendments are being applied now in prep for expanded plantings near the Duck Pond. While doing the prep work for the island, staff discovered the burial site for one of Homer's dogs "Brandy". Production Greenhouse The Production Greenhouse Team had a busy year growing seeds and plugs for the seasonal annual changes. The team of three staff members grew 90% of the bedding plants utilized in warm season, fall, and winter landscapes with translates to over 65,413 plants. These plants can be seen at the Shangri La and Downtown landscapes, used in workshops, and given away for special events. The Production Greenhouse Manager designs the container arrangements seen at Shangri La Gardens and the team assembles those displays which are then moved into place in the gardens with each annual bedding plant change. The team also maintains our special collections of heirloom orchids, bromeliads, and tropical plants, including our collections of Corpse Flowers (Amorphophallus titanum), when these plants are not on display at Shangri La Gardens. Grounds In August of 2022, a grounds crew was added and all mowing and maintenance is now done internally. A crew of 5 and a foreman now manage all that was formally outsourced. This will result in approximately $200k savings each year beginning in 2023. The grounds team has been busy prepping areas for renovation in 2023. GENERAL VISITATION AND SPECIAL EVENTS A quick review of January 1 to December 21, 2022 shows that Shangri La Gardens recorded 26,763 general garden and group tour visitors. The Garden Club of Houston chartered a bus on March 30th as a special excursion for their founder Nancy Thomas. In celebration of National Public Gardens Week, Shangri La Gardens participated in this year's Go Public Gardens Days and held a special plant giveaway for visitors who strolled the gardens from May 10th through May 14th. Hundreds of beautiful coleus, pentas, and veggie plants found new homes with happy and excited individuals and families.- Crescent Moon Concessions July 2022 the Crescent Moon Concessions opened, this is a new self-serve, cashless experience. Now the indoor caf space is available once again for visitors so that they have a place to cool off and relax with their favorite snack and beverage! - 27th Annual Community Trash-Off Community Trash-Off was held in close collaboration with the City of Orange in late February. Approximately 352 community members came out to help pick up trash. Over 90 cubic yards of trash (16,000 pounds) was collected. INVISTA was, for the eighth year, the presenting sponsor for the Community Trash-Off. - Eco-Fest and Butterfly Release In 2022, the Shangri La Gardens Eco-Fest was a way to acknowledge and celebrate Earth Day. This multiday family-friendly event featured engaging activities, as well as three butterfly release opportunities. Hands-on activities were designed to raise awareness of local wildlife and promote sustainable practices while engaging families in safe outdoor experiential learning opportunities. Multiple vendors represented local businesses selling items ranging from plants, to artwork, to sweet treats and more. Guests were gifted a low maintenance pollinator- friendly starter plant to create their own 'butterfly garden' at their home, as well as an accompanying informational care sheet highlighting the importance of pollinator plants. 2,789 guests attended this Entergy sponsored event. - Autumn Fair and Scarecrow Festival The 2022 Autum
