DescOrchestral Music Programs: Internationally recognized as one of the finest orchestras, the BSO is one of the largest orchestral organizations in the world as measured by scope of its operations. Within the U.S., it is the fourth-largest performing arts institution. Between September 30, 2021 - April 30, 2022, the Boston Symphony Orchestra performed 79 concerts in Symphony Hall for more than 130,000 audience members. These performances: Supported living composers by performing world and American premieres by HK Gruber, Jorg Widmann, Unsuk Chin, Bernard Rands, Augusta Read Thomas, Michael Gandolfi, and Kaija Saariaho as well as works by Ellen Reid, Brian Raphael Nabors, Sofia Gubaidulina, Carlos Simon, and Arvo Part. Returned to ambitious vocal music programming with the Tanglewood Festival Chorus in performances of Alban Berg's Wozzeck and Janacek's Glagolitic Mass. Continued the BSO's Grammy award-winning Shostakovich recording cycle with Deutsche Grammophon. Spoke powerfully to the moment: the day after Russia invaded Ukraine, the BSO performed a program of Baltic and Russian music, which the Boston Globe called "one of the most contemplative and emotionally wrenching concerts of the season." December saw the return of a beloved New England tradition with 34 Holiday Pops performances including eight matinees specifically for children. Traditional carols, sing-alongs, storytelling, and Christmas music from Mexico and the African diaspora made for a heartwarming and joyous concert. From May 19 through June 11, 12 Spring Pops concerts offered a wide range of musical experiences from film nights and the music of Broadway to gospel and Duke Ellington and featured such guests as Lara Downes, Christopher Jackson, and Smokie Norful. More than 100,000 people attended a Pops performance this year. The BSO presented a full summer of music at Tanglewood in Lenox, MA. For more than 10 weeks, Tanglewood was alive with 104 concerts and recitals by the BSO, Pops, Tanglewood Music Center Fellows, guest ensembles, and Popular Artists creating a unique experience of enjoying music in the beauty of nature that was enjoyed by 289,810 people of all ages. TANGLEWOOD HIGHLIGHTS: Ken-David Masur led the BSO in a celebration of John Williams' 90th birthday with special guests Yo-Yo Ma, James Taylor, Itzhak Perlman, and Branford Marsalis. They performed for a sold-out audience of close to 17,000 Garrick Ohlsson performed all of Brahms' solo piano pieces in two programs Paul Lewis performed all of Beethoven's piano concertos in three concerts with Andris Nelsons conducting the orchestra Michael Tilson Thomas led two concerts; he and the musicians received a standing ovation from the audience of 7,000 that lasted more than six minutes.Desc

DescEducation and community programs are integral to the BSO's mission. In Boston: To celebrate the re-opening of Symphony Hall in September 2021, the BSO offered a free Concert for Our City: Reunited in Symphony Hall. All four of the BSO's named conductors- Andris Nelsons, Thomas Wilkins, John Williams, and Keith Lockhart-were together in a rare, shared program. 2,205 people of all ages and backgrounds experienced the orchestra's virtuosic range. For a third of them, it was their first experience of the BSO. The BSO opened its doors to 22,278 children, high school and college students, young adults, health care workers, veterans, teachers, clients of nonprofit partners, and people eligible for public benefits through discounted and free tickets, which had an estimated value of $1.8M. 1,930 3rd - 8th grade students from 23 schools attended four Youth Concerts in May where they were introduced to orchestral music that explored the themes of anticipation, expectation, and potential. 589 students from Boston Public Schools attended the concert for free as part of the BSO's commitment to the city's young people. Conductor Thomas Wilkins used the composers biographies and their music to give students a pathway toward greater self-awareness. "My students liked how the conductor explained the music and told them what they would be hearing. They are still talking about it!" Malden 4th grade teacher In December, musicians of the Boston Pops brought holiday cheer to patients at Boston Children's Hospital. After a two-year hiatus, 1,261 people with autism and those who care for them attended the Sensory Friendly Holiday Pops concert on December 5th and the BSO's first Sensory Friendly Family Concert in May. Designed to welcome individuals with autism, the BSO made many accommodations including lower lighting and volume levels, fewer tickets sold to minimize crowding and over-stimulation, reduced ticket prices to increase access, pre-concert guides, relaxed house rules. The BSO had trained autism therapists on site and American Sign Language interpreters. Families enjoyed the music without the fear of being judged and surrounded by others who understood the challenges they face. At Tanglewood: Founded in 1940, the Tanglewood Music Center (TMC), the BSO's summer music academy welcomed 123 Tanglewood Music Center Fellows from across the United States and from around the world. For eight weeks, these talented young musicians rehearsed and performed in 25 chamber and orchestra concerts, which honed their performance skills. They also benefitted from coaching by TMC faculty members, BSO musicians, and guest artists. During the annual Festival of Contemporary Music, the Fellows gave the American premiere of George Benjamin's newest opera, "Lessons in Love and Violence" in a concert performance, which was hailed by the New York Times and the Boston Globe. More than 6,000 people attended performances by these young musicians. In summer 2022, the Tanglewood Learning Institute (TLI) offered four signature programs. Eight Masterclasses and Open Studios gave audiences an inside look at how musicians learn from such master artists as Andris Nelsons, Yo-Yo Ma, and Dawn Upshaw as well as from TMC faculty members. Eight Shop Talks featured informal discussions on life, music, and the future of our field with conductors, composers, and soloists and featured Emanuel Ax, Dashon Burton, Julia Adolphe, and Janai Brugger. The Big Idea: Poet Laureate Jo Harjo and Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Tony Kushner offered unique perspectives that contextualized pressing issues of the day with themes from the Tanglewood season. Full Tilt programs offered unconventional performances including Rzewski's The People United Will Never Be Defeated performed by TMC faculty member Stephen Drury and Cecile McLorin's Ghost Song. 1,310 people enjoyed Tanglewood's Family Concert conducted by Thomas Wilkins. 8,253 year-round Berkshire residents had discounted access to the lawn through a special pass and approximately 1,000 young adults, public school teachers, veterans, and children under age 17 enjoyed free or discounted tickets.Desc

DescThe BSO's two main properties, Symphony Hall and Tanglewood, have long and significant histories and attract visitors from near and far. Symphony Hall's acoustic qualities have earned it a place among the top three concert auditoriums in the world, a fact underscored by the Hall's 1999 designation as a National Historic Landmark. Symphony Hall resonates with more than a century of performances by key artists. It is also a key performance venue for a number of other ensembles and presenters, including the Handel and Haydn Society, the Celebrity Series of Boston, Boston Speakers Series, and the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra. The Hall seats 2,625. The organization spent $1.6 million in maintenance projects at Symphony Hall. Located in the Berkshire hills of Lenox, Massachusetts and established in 1936 by then-Music Director Serge Koussevitzky, Tanglewood is the summer home of the BSO. Its performance venues-Koussevitzky Music Shed, Seiji Ozawa Concert Hall, and Linde Center-and 80 ancillary buildings are located on 526 pastoral acres. Built in 1938, the Koussevitzky Music Shed is a seasonal hall open on three sides with 5,121 seats and can seat an additional 12,000 on the surrounding lawn. Opened in 1994, Seiji Ozawa Hall is a brick and wood structure that typically provides a venue for chamber music performances and for performances by the Tanglewood Music Center. It seats 750 audience members on the orchestra level and 450 in the two balconies, as well as hundreds more on the lawn. When not being used by the orchestra, the BSO rents its facilities at Tanglewood and Symphony Hall to other groups. Local high schools and Berkshire Community College use the Koussevitzky Shed for graduations and community groups use Studio E at the Linde Center during the fall, winter, and spring.Desc

Schedule D, Part V, Line 4The purpose of the endowment is to provide enduring support for the mission of the Orchestra by releasing a substantial and reliable flow of funds to the operating budget. The income earned on the Orchestra's endowment assets may be used for general or donor-restricted purposes and is recorded as net assets without donor restriction or net assets with donor restriction, as appropriate.
Schedule D, Part VII, Line 3The investments in 263 HA Limited Partnership is valued at net cost plus accumulated earnings reduced by the distribution to the BSO.
Schedule D, Part X, Line 2The Orchestra accounts for the effect of any uncertain tax positions based on a "more likely than not" threshold to the recognition of the tax positions being sustained based on the technical merits of the position under scrutiny by the applicable taxing authority. If a tax position or positions are deemed to result in uncertainties of those positions, the unrecognized tax benefit is estimated based on a "cumulative probability assessment" that aggregates the estimated tax liability for all uncertain tax positions. The Orchestra has identified its tax status as tax exempt entity and its determinations relative to income that is considered related and unrelated as its only significant tax positions; however, the Orchestra has determined that such tax positions do not result in an uncertainty requiring recognition. The Orchestra is not currently under examination by any taxing jurisdiction. It's federal and state income tax returns are generally open for examination for three years following the date filed.
