DescSenior Planet is the name of the award-winning set of program experiences through which Older Adults Technology Services (OATS) engages a diverse array of older adults and the organizations that serve them across America. Its world-class programming is delivered through a variety of channels, including in-person group settings, online sessions, and a toll-free contact center, with the aim of changing the way we age. Individual Senior Planet participants, through their collective commitment to "Aging with Attitude and active participation in these programs, undergo measurable changes in outlook and behavior that produce outcomes in specific dimensions of life: increased social connection, improved health, greater financial security, more active participation as citizens and advocates, and access to new pathways to creativity. While OATS itself delivers Senior Planet programs in person in several key US markets, the organization also offers a free licensing program that enables qualified community-based organizations in a growing number of states across America to provide in-person Senior Planet experiences to older residents in local urban, suburban, and rural communities. OATS provides the local organizations with "train the trainer" training, core Senior Planet curriculum, and ongoing support within a growing and collaborative network of institutions who share the aim of helping older people unlock the power of technology to improve their lives.2022 Key Projects:Engagements:1) The flagship Senior Planet program provided over 380,000 engagements to new and returning participants both virtually and in-person in 2022.2) A collaboration with the AARP Foundation, funded by Google, helped close to 10,000 low-income older adults build skills to find jobs, change careers, and explore entrepreneurship.3) Fitness offerings continued to be popular among older adult participants. OATS began live-streaming wellness classes on the Senior Planet YouTube channel, and also celebrated another year of the Senior Planet Sponsored Athlete program.4) OATS also began delivering in-person programs in collaboration with AARP state offices across the country.Expansion of the Senior Planet Licensing ProgramThe Senior Planet licensing program powerfully equips local organizations across the country with the tools to help older adults access technology and use it to enhance their lives. Through an adaptable program model, the Senior Planet licensing structure works with community-based organizations to develop local trainers to deliver Senior Planet's proprietary curriculum and bring Senior Planet's world-class programs to older adults in their area. In 2022, through the Senior Planet Licensing program, over 152 licensing sites nationwide begam offering free Senior Planet programs to adults in local communities. Thought Leadership Highlights(speaking engagements)In April, 2022, OATS Executive Director Tom Kamber published an article titled "Older Adults and the Automation of Everything" in Next Avenue. The article discusses the bimodal distribution of the two distinct trends within the older adult population. Many older adults are thriving in the digital age by Zooming away happily with friends, ordering groceries online, and staying healthy with streaming fitness classes. Others, unfortunately, are struggling to use technology and, in many cases, barely taking advantage of it at all.In April, 2022, OATS attended the American Society on Aging's "On Aging 2022 Conference," the nation's largest multi-disciplinary conference on aging, and sponsored the AgeTech Pavilion stage. OATS assembled a lineup of experts and ground-shakers in the field of aging to share thought-provoking content that explored the intersection of aging and technology. Events featured experts from the New Orleans Center for the Gulf South at Tulane University and the New Orleans Jazz Museum, the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) Foundation, The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, AARP and the AARP Foundation, and a closing session with the CEO of the American Society on Aging. In June, 2022, OATS attended the 2022 American Library Association (ALA) conference & exhibition to promote the Senior Planet licensing program to libraries across the nation and provide information to attendees about participating in the train-the-trainer program to support older adults in their respective communities.Published in July, 2022, the article Helping Older Adults Get Comfortable with Technology Use was included in the Society of Certified Senior Advisors Number 87 Journal. In the article, OATS Executive Director Tom Kamber discussed how other programs, people, and organizations contribute to helping older adults get comfortable using technology. For many older adults, barriers like a lack of access to the internet or the confidence to learn new tech skills can prevent them from developing the technological abilities needed to thrive in life. During Digital Inclusion Week, October 3-7, 2022, which aims to raise awareness of solutions addressing digital equity, Older Adults Technology Services (OATS) from AARP released a report, "Fly Like an Eagle: Measuring Transformational Social Outcomes Among Seniors Using Technology." The report details how access to technology devices and innovative training programs can yield transformational social outcomes for older adults and provides a blueprint for cities and communities looking to implement their own digital inclusion programs. The groundbreaking Fly Like an Eagle report offered statistical evidence that affirmed one of OATS core beliefs: technology training has a measurable effect on social isolation, loneliness, depression, and quality of life for older adults. In November, 2022, Tom Kamber, PhD, Executive Director of Older Adults Technology Services (OATS) from AARP, was the 2022 recipient of the John and Jane Shalam Award to Combat Social Isolation. The award, which recognizes essential and innovative work being done to combat social isolation, was presented to Kamber at the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) Foundation's Hall of Fame Dinner, on Tuesday, November 15th in New York City.Top Press/Media Highlights in 2022:January 4 - Smart Cities Dive highlighted pandemic-driven technology usage to combat loneliness and the work of Senior Planet. January 4 - Tom Kamber spoke with Barron's (picked up on MarketWatch) about wearables and smart devices that can help seniors stay active in retirement. Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 7aThe AARP Chief Executive Officer (or his or her designee) appoints and/or approves voting members of the OATS board of directors. Directors may also be appointed by the AARP Chief Executive Officer (or his or her designee) at any regular or special meeting of the Board. Any vacancy on the Board occurring during the year, including a vacancy created by an increase in the number of Directors, may be filled at any meeting of the Board by a determination of the AARP Chief Executive Officer (or his or her designee). All prospective members of the OATS board will be subject to the screening protocols for board members of AARP Affiliates.
Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 7bThe AARP Chief Executive Officer (or his or her designee) appoints and/or approves voting members of the OATS board of directors. The By-Laws of the Corporation may be altered, amended or repealed only after written approval by the AARP Chief Executive Officer (or his or her designee) and by either the unanimous consent of the Board of Directors, or by majority vote of the Directors then in office at the Annual Meeting or other duly called and held meeting of the Board, the written notice for which shall set forth the proposed alteration.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11bThe Form 990 is prepared and reviewed in AARP's internal tax department. The return is then put through a secondary review which includes the Older Adults Technology Services Executive Director, Group Controller, and other accounting management. After this thorough review process, the Form 990 is distributed to the Board of Directors for their review. After all issues are addressed the return is electronically filed with the Internal Revenue Service.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12cAnnually, all board members and employees (including officers) are required to review the Code of Conduct, formally acknowledge their understanding of the Code, and disclose any real or potential conflicts of interest. Disclosures are reviewed by appropriate management (or in the case of a board member, the Board Chair, and if necessary, the Board of Directors) and the Ethics & Compliance Office. The appropriate resolution plan is implemented (for example, recusal from participating in any deliberations and decisions relevant to the disclosure). The Ethics & Compliance Office monitors compliance with these requirements and ensures proper follow-up as needed.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15Form 990, Part VI, Line 15a and b - Through its shared services agreement with AARP, OATS participates in AARP's enterprise wide compensation reviews. AARP has a competitive position in the marketplace that considers relevant for-profit and not-for-profit data since this is the landscape in which AARP and its affiliates compete for talent. Establishing the appropriate compensation for positions and jobs considers external market pricing (where possible) from an independent, third party compensation firm, internal criteria, and an individual's actual performance and contribution. Internal criteria are based on a standard approach that measures the internal value of positions, including: complexity and scope of responsibility, skill set and competencies, education and experience, and the reporting relationship of the position. An individual's actual performance and contribution is measured through AARP's performance management approach and then rewarded through AARP's annual base pay merit and incentive award programs. This process applies to all employees of OATS including the Executive Director. The total compensation package for executive positions is regularly benchmarked against comparable executive positions using independently published compensation survey data and independent executive consultants. The Executive Director's compensation package is reviewed and discussed by select board members and then approved by the Board Chair. The compensation package for OATS executive management is also reviewed by the Board Chair.
Form 990, Part VI, Section C, line 18The organization provides copies of IRS Form 990 upon request by contacting the organization at (718) 360-1707 or email to info@oats.org. The Form 990 is also made available on its website.
Form 990, Part VI, Section C, line 19Governing documents, conflict of interest policy, and audited financial statements are available upon request.
