DescInstruction: Teachers College is the first and largest graduate school of education in the United States. Since its inception, the College has viewed education holistically, with the conviction that education must work in tandem with efforts to improve and ensure the health and psychological wellbeing of individuals and communities. Thus, in addition to focusing on PK-12 classroom education, Teachers College has helped forge and advance fields of inquiry such as education psychology, nutrition education, special education, conflict resolution, adult learning, movement sciences and many more areas in human development. Throughout history and contemporary discourse, the College has been at the forefront of innovative ideas and inquiry designed to create opportunity for all individuals across the lifespan. Today, approximately a third of TCs tenure track faculty are psychologists and health educators (153 full-time faculty). The College continues to take a multidisciplinary approach through its 45 academic programs in 10 departments across education, health and psychology. The College continues to receive high marks for its academic offerings. In 2016, the Middle States Commission for Higher Education emphatically renewed the institutions accreditation for the next ten years, affirming the Colleges efforts to shape 21st-century approaches to teaching and learning through a research-inspired multi-disciplinary approach, blending both theory and practice and responsiveness to emerging societal issues surrounding education. In 2021, the Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation (AAQEP), founded in 2017, granted full, seven-year accreditation to TCs educator preparation programs. Issued with no recommendations for improvements, the accreditation was accompanied by an official commendation citing the quality of [TCs] programs . . . and deep, responsive, inquiry-based engagement with schools and learners in New York City. Additionally, in 2024, Teachers College tied as the #1 graduate school of education according to U.S. News and World Report and in 2025 as the #2 school.Desc

DescResearch, Training and Public Service: Teachers Colleges faculty includes some of the most internationally prominent and respected scholars, researchers and practitioners in their various fields. Our faculty examine a diverse range of topics, including the impact of poverty on the brain, the legal basis for a constitutional right to education, artificial intelligence in education, gun violence prevention in schools, the impact of microaggressions on wellbeing and language development related to autism. TCs Vice Dean for Research continues to lead efforts to strengthen the institutional infrastructure to support faculty and their work. TCs annual external funded research and training expenditures for FY25 were in excess of $44 million with major funding provided by the US National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Education, the US Department of Health & Human Services, the Bezos Family Foundation and other public and non-profit institutions. With a critical voice in national and global discourse, TC emphasizes public and community engagement as opportunities for faculty, staff and students to implement the Colleges values into practice for public good. The Colleges Digital Futures Institute continues to gain momentum as an interdisciplinary hub that explores innovative uses of technology through teaching, research and public engagement. Faculty engaged in policy research are thought leaders and influencers in early childhood education, community colleges, social services, school finance, national learning standards and funding of national health programs. The College brings academic experts and other thought leaders on a range of issues to campus through visiting professorships, named lectures and other events. TC faculty are also widely known for innovative curriculum development in academic subjects; school-based health education; nutrition education; organizational psychology; developmental psychology; and more. Teachers College partners with the local community through several innovative school partnerships. The Teachers College Community School (TCCS), located in West Harlem, provides expertise, academic enrichment and support throughout the school, specifically: professional development for teachers; development and evaluation of curriculum; and academic enrichment. More than 20 TC students participate in programs at TCCS during each academic semester. Through TCs Edmund W. Gordon Institute for Advanced Study, which celebrated its 50th year in 2023, the College also supports the university-assisted community school initiative called Raising Educational Achievement of Harlem (REACH), which brings together community-based organizations and institutional partners to provide academic support and enrichment, mentoring, and mental health support at local schools. REACH supports more than 800 students in three partner schools in Central Harlem.Desc

Form And Line ReferenceFormAndLineReferenceDescExplanationExplanationTxt
Pt III, Line 1aCollections at the College include works of art, literary works, historical treasures, and artifacts that are maintained in the Colleges library and buildings. These collections are protected and preserved for public exhibition, education, research, and the furtherance of public service and, therefore, are not recognized as assets on the balance sheets. The College does not sell its collections and any costs associated with purchasing additions to and maintaining these collections are recorded as operating expenses in the period in which the items are acquired.
Pt III, Line 4The Gottesman Libraries at Teachers College contains the worlds largest and richest collection of materials on educational professions. The contemporary collections are continuously enhanced by an active acquisition program jointly planned by departmental librarians, faculty, and students. Traditional print & non-print publications are supplemented by a growing number of visual and electronic formats. Many of the historical and archival collections are unavailable elsewhere and represent in balance, breadth, and depth an archive of American intellectual and social history. Elements of these collections are being made more accessible through ongoing digitization projects. Overall, the collections include about 500,000 printed volumes together with substantial non-print collections. In addition to the contemporary collections, the Gottesman Libraries maintain four major historical collections of books, manuscripts, and archival materials. These collections focusing on the history of the College, educational research and scholarship, curriculum materials, and childrens fiction allow the Libraries to marshal efforts to develop resources of national and international significance. The library collections support the work of faculty and students in all programs of the College. In addition, these collections are accessible to scholars in the relevant fields from across the country and throughout the world. The materials in the library collections are essential for the efforts of the College to prepare the current generation of educators and educational researchers for their work, which will improve the practice of education and the conduct of educational research. The permanent art collections consists of a variety of almost 2,700 artworks that have been collected over time. The works are mainly on paper, board, canvas and photographic, but also include a significantly smaller number of sculptural pieces and video art. Many of the pieces are on display in different parts of the College including departmental and program offices and common areas such as hallways and community lounges. The remainder are housed in storage at the Macy Art Gallery in the Art & Art Education Program and in the Gottesman Libraries Historical Art Collections. The permanent collection serves multiple purposes, all of which are geared towards learning and providing opportunities for formal and informal education and socio-cultural inquiry through the study and exhibition of the Collection. The Collection serves as a cultural and historical record of the discipline of Education, the history of the College, NYC and the US, as well as of international contexts, since the Colleges establishment in the late 19th century. The Collection also provides an opportunity and potential for community and cross-disciplinary community development through curatorial and cultural events such as exhibitions, conferences and lectures surrounding the Collections, that may be coordinated through various academic programs. One of the most valued purposes of the collection is that it serves as a unique resource for student and faculty research.

Conflict of Interest and Commitment Policy - applies to all employees, including faculty and those who are required to comply with the Trustee, Officers and Key Person and Academic and Research Conflict of Interest Policies. The policy is managed by the Vice President for Administration and serves to provide guidance to employees regarding actual, potential or perceived Conflicts of Interest and Conflicts of Commitment that may arise from outside interests and outside activities. Academic and Research Conflict of Interest Policy - applies to all faculty and research staff, including students directly involved in College research and is managed by the Office of the Provost. The purpose of the policy is to maintain the integrity of Research and contracted projects conducted at or under the auspices of College. The Committee meets at least annually, and more frequently when needed, and uses a compensation comparison of colleges and universities in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic region as well as a smaller set of prestigious colleges and universities. The Committee periodically retains an outside compensation consultant to analyze the compensation of the Colleges officers and key employees based on comparatibility data. The last full salary study was completed in FY25 for the President and Executives. The Committee (and the Board) keep contemporaneous minutes of the committee meetings and decisions made.
