SEMINARS and WORKSHOPS: Trained 5,875 community leaders through 146 workshops and webinars in every corner of the state. These also provided opportunities for nonprofit board and staff members to exchange solutions, share the lessons they have learned, and offer support to each other in their challenging work. Sample topics INCLUDE Budgeting, 2011 Legislature Changes, Changing Roles of Boards of Directors, Nonprofit Technology Solutions, Ask a Reporter: Feedback on Media Strategies, State Budget Cuts, Voter Engagement, Volunteerism, Successful Management in the New Economy, and Salaries and Benefits in Nonprofits. Educated 913 community leaders about emerging issues and best practices at our 2010 Annual Conference. Coached 282 nonprofits to tell their stories MORE EFFECTIVELY THROUGH a sold-out workshop, "Storytelling: The First Big Thing." Presented a sold-out conference, "Rolling Up Your Sleeves for the 2011 Legislature," educating 335 people on how to advocate successfully, frame their messageS for lawmakers, and speak out on nonprofit sector issues. Collaborated again with the N.C. Association of CPAs to present "Accounting 101 Boot Camps" across the state and co-sponsored the 2011 Not-for-Profit Accounting Conference with more than 500 people attending these.

Outreach, Education of the Public, and Collaboration: Educated the public on the value of nonprofits to the people of North Carolina. Welcomed 377,125 page views by 180,128 unique visitors to our website, www.ncnonprofits.org, which offers links to nonprofits across the state and extensive resources on effective nonprofit practices, training opportunities, and nonprofit careers. Held 82 media interviews and engaged 2,232 people through social media. Celebrated November as our state's Nonprofit Awareness Month by leading a "Twitter Extravaganza" for the entire month and emailing weekly tips and tools to help educate the public in communities across North Carolina. Grew our active network for advocacy and public education to 6,854 community leaders in all 100 counties. Mobilized nonprofits to make the case against disproportionate cuts to nonprofits in the state budget. Advocated successfully to protect state grants to nonprofits by defeating a bill that would have allowed state agencies to withhold up to 2% of nonprofits' grants to fund their own oversight. Distributed information on the 7,000 N.C. nonprofits THAT WERE at risk of losing 501(c)(3) status if they failed to file with the IRS. Held the second annual "NC Nonprofits Day" with 250 board and staff members coming to Raleigh to talk with their legislators. Collaborated with hundreds of statewide, local, and national organizations that serve nonprofits.

Member Services to Nonprofits: Offered an array of services to increase nonprofits' knowledge and their capacity to achieve impact for their communities and causes. Helped nonprofits exchange solutions and work together for a better North Carolina by supporting a self-help network of 6,854 board and staff leaders and other volunteers in 1,537 nonprofits of all sizes and types in all 100 counties. More than 90% of Member nonprofits report that they have strengthened their organizations through information or help from the N.C. Center for Nonprofits, and 99% recommend the Center to others. Received an average rating of 4.2 or higher on all Center services (on a 5-point scale where 5 is 'excellent' and 4 is 'good'). Exceeded our goal of an 85% member retention rate set by the Board of Directors as part of the Center's strategic plan. Convened local "Conversations with Members" in Banner Elk, Bryson City, Fayetteville, and Wilmington. Evaluated all Center programs for continuous improvement and to plan strategically for the future.

Compiled 1,200 "Frequently Asked Questions" on our website, as well as carefully-selected resources on organizational issues such as fundraising, boards, and human resources. Published resources, such as a monthly electronic "Connect & Learn" update, a quarterly Common Ground newsletter, and the Center's signature booklet, Principles & Practices for Nonprofit Excellence: A Self-Help Tool for Organizational Effectiveness. This booklet lists specific benchmarks to help nonprofits identify areas for improvements as they strive for excellence. The Center publishes these resources to help ensure the quality of the nonprofit sector and to promote stewardship by individual nonprofits and the sector as a whole. Provided 138 free consultations for nonprofits - including 104 pro bono sessions with experienced attorneys, Certified Public Accountants, and professionals in human resources and marketing through our collaboration with the N.C. Bar Association, N.C. Association of CPAs, Raleigh-Wake Human Resources Management Association, and American Marketing Association. Description: Research Expenses: $24,064 including grants of $0 Revenue: $0 Research: Took the lead to find collaborative solutions to problems in state government contracting by raising long-standing, systemic issues based on a new national Urban Institute report AND A SURVEY BY THE N.C. CENTER FOR NONPROFITS. Issues included overly complex applications and reports, not paying the full cost to provide the services required, and changing contract terms mid-stream. Conducted a statewide survey to capture the recession's impact on N.C. nonprofits and those they serve. Informed legislative leaders, the Governor, and the public of these findings, which include that in 2010, more than 40% of N.C. nonprofits cut staff positions, 32% cut benefits, and 33% cut services. Provided N.C. nonprofits with solid data to help set compensation levels in their organizations through our study of Salaries and Benefits in North Carolina Nonprofits with comparability data for organizations by budget size, field, and region of the state for 206 different positions and for dozens of employee benefits. This resource is now available online at www.ncnonprofits.org Description: Nonprofit Sector Resource Conservation Expenses: $28,120 including grants of $0 Revenue: $0 Nonprofit Sector Resource Conservation: Offered 40 programs to help nonprofits conserve resources so they can maximize their work's value to North Carolina's communities.
