Denver Zoo's animal care program is recognized for its enrichment and operant conditioning training which seeks to create opportunities for animals to exercise their natural behaviors and, through positive reinforcement, to participate in their own health care by presenting different body parts for examination or treatments by keepers and veterinarians with minimal stress to the animal. These training sessions are a key component of the bond that zookeepers build with the animals in their care. Working with an animal nutritionist, each animal receives a custom diet designed for its individual needs. These diets consist of the highest grades of fruits, vegetables, grains, fish and meats. In 2010, the animal care team welcomed the births of various endangered species.Denver Zoo's hospital has a staff of three full-time veterinarians and three technicians and provides the highest quality animal health care. This team possesses the knowledge to care for 700 different species of animals and can respond to nearly any emergency with the resources on-property. Denver Zoo's commitment to global conservation is represented through the 92 field conservation and research projects led by Denver Zoo staff or research associates during 2010. The Zoo's Conservation/Biology Department is dedicated to field research and animal conservation projects around the globe. Since the Department was created in 1996, the zoo has participated in over 568 projects in 57 countries on all continents. Conservation projects focus on key species and landscape conservation planning, a widely-accepted method of conserving large ecological systems. Projects in Mongolia, Kenya, Peru, Vietnam, Indonesia and the western United States were a focus in 2010. In December of 2010, Denver Zoo and the Mongolian Academy of Sciences were honored by the United Nations fourteen years after establishing a research camp in Mongolia's Ikh Nart Nature Reserve. The U.N.'s Development Programme (UNDP) designated the conservation work the zoo and academy have performed at the reserve as a "model program." The program in Ikh Nart will be used as an example to be replicated and adapted to other parks and reserves in Mongolia. Also of note, in August 2010, The American Association of Zookeepers' Excellence in Animal Care Award was presented to Denver Zoo's Predator Ridge team in recognition of "achievement of an individual or team in the animal care field and in fostering professionalism." 22201234 Zoo ImprovementsZoo improvements include both small and large capital projects. Small capital projects include critical investments to maintain the Zoo's existing facilities and to provide equipment needed to care for the Zoo and allow staff to work safely. In 2010, these expenditures generally included 2284504 1215499 Education and Volunteer ProgramsEducation is a major focus for Denver Zoo, with a variety of programs available for diverse audiences, both at the zoo and at schools and other locations throughout the Denver metro area. The zoo reaches out to diverse audiences, especially underserved populations that historically have not participated in programs offered by scientific and cultural facilities. We have strategically sought collaborations with partners that have earned the trust of underrepresented audiences. In 2010, over 53,000 students participated in on-site classes, assemblies, science workshops, career programs, our popular Bunk with the Beasts program, Summer Safari (a day camp) and other programs. This number does not include students who visited the zoo on field trips. Nearly 85,000 children and adults participated in education outreach programming, primarily Pre-K through 12th grade students. In 2010, 714 volunteers gave 80,034 hours of their time to Denver Zoo - an average of 144 hours per person. Volunteers dedicated their time to enhancing the visitor experience, supporting staff, helping to care for animals, providing education programs in schools, community centers and Senior Centers, helping to foster empathy for animals, and conservation. Denver Zoo's "Zoo Crew" Teen Volunteer program which provides volunteering opportunities for youth ages 13-18, had 4212763 1474535 Other Programs includes: Certificates of Participation, Member Services, Guest Services, Horticulture and Interns.
