The organization is a trusted leader in the use of unbiased science for problem-solving and has a long history of working collaboratively with entities that have the capacity to leverage change. Manomet's commitment to achieve a more sustainable world recognizes that humans are not living sustainably - that we are using resources up - and that saving nature can no longer be viewed as somehow separate from saving ourselves. If we can live sustainably, then we have a chance of saving nature as well. The natural systems that both people and wildlife depend upon are being impacted as never before by climate change, habitat loss, increased consumption of natural resources and other pressing issues. Manomet is using science, partnerships, and innovative approaches to forge lasting solutions through its three major initiatives. Climate Change & Energy Initiative: The changing climate poses unprecedented challenges to the conservation of plants and animals, to the health of ecosystems, and to the essential services that natural landscapes provide to human communities. Manomet's Climate Change & Energy Initiative is focused on adaptation strategies for human communities and wildlife habitats. This is being carried out in collaboration with state and federal agencies, foundations, landowners, NGOs, and businesses to identify and implement robust approaches that will help conserve threatened resources. Our Energy Program is designed to give communities a trusted, objective information source to help them evaluate the merits and impact of wind energy projects. This education and outreach will lead to a more civil and productive wind power debate and more community support for appropriate wind energy development. Natural Capital Initiative: Clean water, food production, clean air, wood, flood control, and space for recreation are just some of the free services that nature provides to human communities. Manomet's Natural Capital Initiative is working to identify and quantify, then protect, these ecosystem services. Through its work with a variety of stakeholders, including landowners, managers, dairy farmers, and policy makers, Manomet is providing tools and on-the-ground management actions to ensure the sustainability of natural systems for future generations. Shorebird Recovery Project: Safeguarding the survival of shorebirds and protecting their habitats is the goal of a hemispheric conservation initiative known as the Shorebird Recovery Project led by Manomet. This Project is the largest concentrated partner-driven effort in the Americas to reverse the population declines of shorebirds. The Site-based Conservation component, one of three, is implemented through the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network, at the 84 member sites in 13 countries covering 31 million acres of habitat. The Science component is spearheaded by Manomet through the Shorebird Research Group of the Americas and the Arctic Shorebird Demographics Network. The third component, Success Measures, is monitored through the International Shorebird Surveys, now a collaboration between Manomet and the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology. Key Accomplishments: 1. Held a first-ever Social Challenge of Wind Energy conference in Plymouth, Massachusetts, bringing together community leaders, developers, conservationists and social outreach experts for a science-based, cooperative discussion regarding the merits and impact of wind energy projects. 2. Led the regionalization of climate change planning by partnering with northeastern states' fish and wildlife agencies, conservation organizations, and the states' U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service with the goal of developing effective regional plans and policies to adapt to climate change. 3. Kicked off a regional conversation about climate change adaptation for forests and nature conservation at the landscape level with over 120 participants from Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. 4. Completed the largest joint climate change vulnerability assessment in the northeast for over 400 species of greatest conservation need in Maine with over 60 experts from Maine and in collaboration with Maine Department of Inland Fish and Wildlife, Maine Nature Conservancy, Maine Audubon, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and Maine Natural Areas Program. 5. Served as the Secretariat for the Climate Change and Wildlife Alliance-Massachusetts, a group of 10 Massachusetts non-government organizations and state agencies established to promote and facilitate science-based adaptation strategies to conserve Massachusetts' ecosystems in the face of climate change. 6. Developed climate change adaptation strategies specific to both rural resource sectors (e.g., forestry and agriculture) and on a landscape scale (e.g., watershed). 7. Led a collaborative evaluation of the vulnerabilities of migratory shorebird species and their stop-over habitats to climate change. 8. Worked with partners to position Atlantic Coast state agencies for proactive management of energy development activities to protect wildlife and habitats. 9. Completed a study on biomass energy for the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources (DOER) to help Massachusetts understand the economic and ecological potential, and implications, of using woody biomass (forests) in Massachusetts as a renewable energy source. The Massachusetts DOER released proposed regulations last fall to establish criteria that woody biomass facilities must meet under the state's Renewable Energy Portfolio. 10. Worked with Cabot Creamery and the Agri-Mark dairy cooperative in the Northeast to complete a dairy sustainable scorecard designed to help farmers improve their sustainability performance, with nationwide implementation potential through the trade group Dairy Management Inc. 11. Created a science-based report card for practitioners to promote high-quality forest offset projects in the marketplace and to enhance the role of forests in mitigating climate change. 12. Worked with Maine small businesses to develop a sustainability scorecard for measuring and managing their sustainability. 13. Identified forestlands important to providing clean water for the city of Portland, Maine, and created criteria for a new payment for ecosystem services model by which landowners can be compensated to keep their land in forest cover. 14. Conducted a Natural Resources Damage Assessment survey to assess the Deepwater Horizon oil disaster's impact on migrating shorebirds through coordinated shorebird surveys along the U.S. Gulf Coast. 15. Identified all known important shorebird sites across the Western Hemisphere by mining existing data sources. 16. Developed conservation action plans for America's high-priority shorebird species. 17. Led the development and implementation of a coast-wide recovery plan for all 13 Atlantic Coast states for the American Oystercatcher, a highly-threatened shorebird species. 18. Led a coalition of partners to recover rufa Red Knots to a sustainable population. 19. Created consensus Shorebird Recovery Plans for the critical regions of Northwest Mexico and Patagonia, South America. 20. Spearheaded the Chiloe (Chile) Shorebird Conservation Coalition to implement a locally driven consensus approach to conservation of shorebirds and their habitats at this site of hemispheric importance. 21. Served in an advisory role with rice and crawfish growers and the Department of Agriculture's Natural Resource Conservation Service in creating the Migratory Bird Habitat Initiative which resulted in 471,000 acres of shorebird habitat in a matter of weeks as a response to the BP Deepwater Horizon disaster. 22. Coordinated an Arctic-wide network to determine what factors limit shorebird populations on the breeding grounds in the Arctic, and conducted field surveys. 23. Completed a shorebird survey by boat of the entire coastline of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge; reported live from the field on www.arcticblog.manomet.org.
