This exhibition brought together women's history, western history and environmental history to show how women have been at the heart of the western enterprise across cultures and over time. Historical artifacts, art, photographs, and biographies of individual women lead visitors through three distinctive western environments created and inhabited by women. 1062945 167092 In 2010, museum teachers and docents toured over 51,000 students through the museum - approximately one-third of students came through the all aboard bus program. This program provides free bus transportation and family memberships to underserved students in the Los Angeles area. The education department offers 20 different museum teacher programs exploring different aspects of life in the west through the Autry's art and artifacts, and meeting California state content standards in history/social science for kindergarten through 12th grade. Six new teacher programs were developed for the 2010-11 school year on subjects as diverse as animals of the west (for kindergarten through 2nd grade), California's first peoples (for 2nd through 6th grades) and even the poetic west (for 7th through 12th grades), offering our older students a deeper understanding of the story of the west by exploring The Autry's objects and artifacts through native American poetry, novel excerpts and cowboy songs. (paintings, sculptures, works on paper, and photographs), historic artifacts, archaeological and ethnographic materials, sound recording, films, and library and research material related to the history of the west and indigenous cultures of the United States. The collection items, which are acquired through purchases and contributions, are not recognized as assets on the statement of financial position. All are held for educational, research, and display purposes. The Autry's policy is that all items are cataloged, preserved, and cared for according to the American Association of museum's standards. Activities verifying their existence and assessing their condition are performed continuously. Proceeds from deaccessions or insurance recoveries are reflected as increases in the appropriate net asset classes. The collections are subject to a policy that requires proceeds from their sales to be used to acquire or conserve other items for collections, not for operations. Description of Intended Use of Endowment Funds: Part V, Line 4: The Autry's endowment fund comprises of board-designated endowments, or quasi-endowments and permanent (true) endowments. The board designated endowments were established by the organization itself from unrestricted donor funds. The organization itself imposed temporary restrictions on their use. Permanent endowments were established by donor-restricted gifts and are maintained to provide a permanent source of income, with the stipulation that principal must be invested and kept intact in perpetuity, while only the income generated can be used by the organization. Total return of the fund is targeted to meet or exceed the expected long-term needs of the Autry in order to provide a reliable stream of income for operations and avoid adverse economic impact to the organization. Description of Uncertain Tax Positions Under FIN 48: Part X: In accordance with FASB ASC No. 740, Uncertainty in Income Taxes, the Autry recognized the impact of tax positions in the financial statements if the position is more likely than not to be sustained on audit, based on the technical merits of the position. As of December 31, 2010 and 2009, the Autry has determined that there are no material uncertain tax positions that require recognition or disclosure in the financial statements or which may have an effect on its tax exempt status. Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12c In compliance with federal regulations, the Autry requires all officers, directors, trustees, and key employees to complete the "conflict of interest" at least annually. This report is updated once a year or within ten days whenever there is a change in outside financial interest that could give appearance of a conflict of interest. As questions arise, the CFO investigates the situation and discusses the findings with the chair of the governing body. Together they work on finding a solution to the problem. Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15 In 2010, the Autry hired a new President and CEO. This process included creating a board search committee led by the board's president. Furthermore, the Autry hired an outside executive search firm to assist with the process of finding the right candidate. Prior to selecting the final candidate, the board search committee reviewed salary data provided by both HR manager and the outside executive search firm. Once selected, the final candidate was then presented to the board for approval.
