<Description>During 2010, Mount Vernon maintained its status as the most popular historic estate in America. 2010 total attendance was 1,077,477 including 302,082 students. Our Interpretation staff continued to expand the education experience at Mount Vernon with new and exciting programs for visitors of all ages. We announced our plans to build the Fred W. Smith National Library for the Study of George Washington to serve as the premier site for historians and authors to research and write about all things George Washington. The Library site will include a scholars' residence to house up to eight scholars at any one time. We kicked-off a $100 million campaign to not only design and build the Library but also implement new or expanded programs focused on educating the world about the life, leadership and character of George Washington. The Association is the oldest national historic preservation organization in the country and celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2010. In honor of the anniversary, we published The Mount Vernon Ladies Association: 150 Years of Restoring George Washington's Home, a unique perspective of Mount Vernon's rescue, focusing on the women who led the charge and the many preservation initiatives they have initiated over the years. In February we opened Bringing Them Home: 150 Years of Restoring the Washington Collection, a new exhibit in the F.M. Kirby Foundation Gallery focused on the Association's search for Mount Vernon's original furnishings. We increased the historical accuracy and interpretation of the Mansion's Little Parlor as well as the Greenhouse Slave Quarters. These spaces benefited from new curatorial research into their 18th-century appearance and use, and the collection objects placed within them received assessment and treatment by the conservation staff. As part of the goal to better our collections care and preservation (1) the collections management staff completed a 2-year initiative to inventory the curatorial collection and record locations in the new TMS (The Museum System) database, (2) the library staff completed an inventory of the Association's modern and rare book collections as well as initiated a Founding Fathers Library Consortium, and (3) the curatorial and conservation staffs collaborated on a plan to assess and conserve Mansion prints of the highest priority. To reach and engage students and visitors unable to travel to Mount Vernon, the curatorial staff launched a major traveling exhibition-entitled Discover the Real George Washington: New Views from Mount Vernon-which debuted at the Heinz History Center of Pittsburgh in February and opened at the North Carolina Museum of History in Raleigh during September. From 2010 to early 2013, the exhibit will visit 9 sites across the country. The curatorial staff also provided George Washington-focused on-site curatorial and library tours, workshops, and object-based presentations to teachers and graduate students as a means to reach students across the nation. In consultation with teachers and museum specialists, our Education department revised the George Washington Biography Lesson in order to increase its curriculum relevance and render it more user-friendly. We developed a traveling panel exhibition on George Washington, which will begin traveling to libraries, small museums and other low-security venues in February 2011. The Education department conducted "leadership institutes" using George Washington's leadership and character as a part of the training of senior staff at several large organizations. We distributed over 1,000 portraits of George Washington to schools across the country. To promote the study of George Washington's achievements and example in our schools the Education department staff presented at: . Regional workshops in collaboration with local museums and historic sites in New Jersey, Missouri, and Massachusetts. . State-level social studies conferences in New York and Maryland. . The National Council for History Education conference. . Teachers Night at the Smithsonian. 68 teachers from 14 states across the country participated in our week-long intensive Teachers' Institutes. The Teachers' Institute is an intensive week of study and discussion about colonial history and the remarkable role George Washington played in the founding of our nation. We established Teaching Ambassador programs in Ohio and Nevada and launched a two-year continuation of the Ambassador program in Oklahoma. Teaching ambassadors provide educators within their states with access to existing and new educational programs about George Washington and Mount Vernon. Teaching ambassador activities include conducting regional workshops for educators, maintaining a state specific educator blog about Mount Vernon, creating teaching units for the regional workshops and other activities to promote the wisdom of George Washington in the ambassador's home state. Our archaeology team completed excavations in the Upper Garden to retrieve information to guide plans for its restoration. Based on the information gathered, the Horticulture department worked to restore the garden to how it looked when George and Martha strolled the garden paths. The south half of the garden was scraped away, new soil added, grading accomplished, new irrigation installed, brick edging laid, and boxwood, bulbs, roses, shrubs, fruit trees, flowers and vegetables of all sorts were replanted. The Upper Garden restoration will be completed in April 2011.</Description>

Responsibility for the collections falls to the Collections Department, which is divided into the Fine and Decorative Arts Curatorial Collection, Special Collections, the Library, and Photo Archives. The Fine and Decorative Arts Curatorial Collection includes three-dimensional objects, textiles, works of art on paper, and paintings. Special Collections includes rare books, historic manuscripts, photographs, MVLA archival materials, and printed ephemera. The Library collects printed material with a primary emphasis on George Washington, Mount Vernon, and the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association. Photo Archives contains modern film, negatives, and digital image files of a variety of Mount Vernon related subjects. The most important initial criterion with which to evaluate a potential acquisition is its contribution to interpretation, exhibition, and research value at Mount Vernon. This includes the following items: -Objects original to Mount Vernon or owned by George and Martha Washington. -Objects related to Washington's non-domestic life, including his role as military leader, surveyor, and president. -Manuscripts by George or Martha Washington not previously reproduced or published in print or electronic format. Books and other published materials owned by George or Martha Washington. -Objects relating to the development and domestic life of Mount Vernon, including material related to family members, visitors, and acquaintances. -Period objects that replicate objects that were at Mount Vernon, for the purpose of enhancing the interpretation and understanding of the estate and the life and legacy of George and Martha Washington. -Archival materials relating to the development and domestic life of Mount Vernon, including materials of family members, visitors, and acquaintances. Books of the Washington and Custis families that are related to collections or interpretation goals. -Manuscripts by George or Martha Washington previously reproduced or published in print or electronic format. -Maps, plans, surveys, manuscripts, rare books, photographs and other documents of historical value relating to 17th, 18th 19th and 20th century life at Mount Vernon and the Washington family.</Explanation>

<Explanation>Historical properties owned by the Association were acquired through purchases and contributions since the Association's inception. These historical properties are not included as assets in the balance sheet. The cost of these properties is not readily available, and the Association is of the opinion that, because of the intrinsic value of the properties, it is impractical to assign values to the components. Purchases of collection items are recorded as decreases in unrestricted net assets in the year in which the items are acquired, or as temporarily or permanently restricted net assets if the assets used to purchase the items are restricted by donors. Financial statements do not reflect any contributed collection items.</Explanation>

<Explanation>The process surrounding the preparation of this form 990, return of organization exempt from income tax, contained three levels of review. A draft of the return was prepared by our tax advisors, Reznick Group, based on financial information in our certified audit, organizational information documented from the audit, preparation of the required schedules by the finance department, and answers to checklist questions. The draft was first reviewed by the chief financial officer and controller for accuracy of the financial information and complete disclosures. Copies of the draft return were then provided to the President, outside legal counsel, the regent and chairs of the finance and audit committee. A conference call was held with this group, internal finance staff and our tax advisors to explain the return and the relevance to non-profit governance, and discuss the importance of the underlying disclosures to potential donors. After changes were made as a result of these reviews, a final draft copy of the return was provided to all board members for any additional comments or questions before filing.</Explanation>

The form was prepared by outside counsel and asks for documentation of potential conflicts of interest in the following areas: - financial interests - gifts or entertainment that might influence decision making - any other activities The forms are reviewed by the Chief Financial Officer and are discussed with outside counsel and the Executive Committee of the Board, if appropriate. The Executive Director reviews the completed form of the CFO, and takes any appropriate action.</Explanation>

<Explanation>In late 2006, the board authorized the hiring of Quatt Associates, an outside compensation consultant, to do a comparative review of the compensation of our president and approximately 30 additional management positions. Quatt has significant experience in this area, particularly in the non-profit industry. They surveyed all positions down to the manager level and provided us with benchmark compensation data in comparison to our peer groups (museums and historic houses, etc.) and the northern virginia (suburb of washington, dc) nonprofit job market. The results of this study and subsequent discussions with Quatt in 2008 were used as a basis for negotiating an employment contract with the president and have continued to be used since that time in current compensations decisions. The board plans to conduct these types of compensation studies on a periodic basis, as appropriate, with the next study scheduled for early 2011.</Explanation>

<Explanation>Historical Properties and Collections Historical properties and collections owned by the Association were acquired through purchases and contributions since the Association's inception. These historical properties and collections are not included as assets in the statement of financial position. The cost of the properties is not readily available, and the Association is of the opinion that, because of the intrinsic value of the properties, it is impractical to assign values to the components. Purchases of collection items are recorded as decreases in unrestricted net assets in the year in which the items are acquired or as temporarily or permanently restricted net assets if the assets used to purchase the items are restricted by donors. Financial statements do not reflect any contributed collection items.</Explanation>
