Education DivisionThe Science Museum of Minnesota's Education Division creates and delivers educational programs that increase the public's understanding of science, technology, engineering, and math and that serve to attract youth to science and science careers. The Education Division incorporates 12 departments and approximately 25 grant-funded projects. Programs that serve K-12 School Audiences include the following:School Outreach delivers museum programs throughout Minnesota and the surrounding states to both school and non-school audiences. Programs include science demonstrations and assemblies, weeklong science residencies, Museum Trunks, and an array of educational resources, products, and materials for the classroom. In 2009/10 School Outreach programs reached 75,351 students in their classrooms. Professional Development programs for teachers including science content conferences, inquiry institutes/workshops, and science house - a teacher resource center served over 1,300 teachers totaling over 16,000 contact hours of inservice programming. The School Services and School Visits Departments provide weeklong science residencies (Investigator Clubs), science enrichment classes, pre and post field trip visit materials linking our exhibits with state science/math standards, and a weekly online newsletter for science educators. School field trips participation reached 98,880 this past year. The Warner Nature Center which is an affiliated program of the museum provides school, adult, family, and youth audiences with a number of environmental education and environmental science activities and programs. This past year approximately 14,000 students, families, and adults participated in WNC educational programs.Besides serving the K-12 school audiences, SMM developed and conducted a broad array of educational programs for out of school audiences. The Youth and Family Programs Department offers science enrichment classes, workshops, special weekend events, and weeklong science camps for children (3-13) and families covering a broad, multi-disciplined array of STEM content. This past year over 11,000 youth participated in these programs at the museum and multiple community sites away from the museum. The Learning Technologies Center (LTC) is an applied educational research and development center organized to support informal science learning experiences through creative and meaningful applications of digital technologies. The LTC serves as a project funded incubator for developing new methods and web-based approaches for integrating digital and information technologies into exhibits and ongoing museum programs. LTC provided a variety of camps, workshops, and programs for youth, adults and families that reached over a thousand participants this past year. Another significant museum program is The Kitty Andersen Youth Science Center (YSC) which is an endowed Center that engages and integrates underserved teen youth into the museum's programs and operations. The YSC provides a coordinated pathway of learning and working opportunities in the museum for youth between the ages of 13-18. Several hundred youth, working in teams and mentored by adult staff and volunteers, engage in scientific research, exhibit development, community outreach, and special museum events each year. The Adult and Group Programs offers overnight camp-ins for youth and family groups, a variety of adult science lectures and classes, and occasional family field trips and tours for the community and the museum's membership. In FY09/10 a total of 4,500 adults and youth participated in these programs. The Computer Education Center develops and delivers several thousand software and computer training classes a year for approximately 11,500 museum members, and business or professional audiences.

SCIENCE DIVISIONANTHROPOLOGY:The Science Museum of Minnesota's Anthropology Department has curatorial responsibilities for the museum's worldwide collections of archaeological and ethnological artifacts. In 2009/2010 the Anthropology Department accessioned a variety of collections to enhance our holdings. Numerous job shadows, interviews, and other educational opportunities were provided. Staff also used a number of "community curators" to help identify artifacts and get the correct voice for exhibitions as well as to enhance our permanent records for each object. We are continuing to germinate seeds of indigenous species from the Museums permanent collection for research and outreach purposes.BIOLOGY:Biology staff conducts and collaborates on research, and maintains, builds, and exhibits collections of vertebrate and invertebrate animals and planet specimens. In 2009/2010, the biologist gave the weekly on-floor presentations demonstrating specimen preparation to school groups and other museum visitors, and worked with children participating in various museum education programs. The Biologist continued his ongoing project collecting plant specimens in Wadena County, Minnesota, completed contract work for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, and continued to add biological specimens to the museum's collections. The Biologist continues to participate in a program mentoring and introducing urban youth to deer hunting and related environmental/ecological activities, including buckthorn removal. PALEONTOLOGY:The Paleontology Department is concerned with collecting, preserving, exhibiting, and interpreting paleontological materials, involving an intensive program of preparation and systematic classification which puts the organisms within a context of their fundamental relationships. In 2009/2010, Museum paleontologists conducted field research projects in Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota and South Carolina. Numerous specimens and suites of specimens were added to the Museum's collections.COLLECTIONS MANAGEMENT AND CONSERVATION: (Collections Services)The Science Museum of Minnesota's Collections Services are responsible for the health, safety, and security of the museum's collections in storage, on exhibit, and on loan. Staff maintains, preserves, organizes and catalogs the collections. The planning of Collections Management continued to focus on digitization of the collections to make them more accessible to a broader audience. Collections staff gave numerous tours of lab facilities and collections to countless community, educational, and donor groups. Conservation staff performed treatment on an ongoing maintenance of collections and prepared artifacts for exhibit. Integrated Pest Management and environmental monitoring was continued for the entire museum. Collections staff gave a number of talks at conferences about collections planning, moving collections, and the continued need of collaboration in what we do in our industry. We continue to help with all aspects of the installing and taking down of our traveling exhibitions. In the past year about 570 people toured our collections and about 47 researchers studied at SMM. More than 2750 specimens and artifacts were added to the collection this year.ST. CROIX WATERSHED RESEARCH STATION:The Museum's St. Croix Watershed Research Station conducts ecological research at the watershed scale and managed staff research projects during 2009/2010. Studies continued on the role of mercury in the environment, with concentration on the role of methylmercury in forested wetlands. Studies of the St. Croix River included analysis of wetland environmental histories, development of a watershed model to provide technical information to water management organizations, and restoration of several prairies in the watershed. Several cooperative projects with the National Park Service continue to focus on development of protocols for inventory and monitoring of resources in national parks of the Great Lakes Region. Three outreach events were held for members of the station's Friend Group; approximately 125 people attended the annual St. Croix River Research Rendezvous sponsored by the research station; and Artist at Pine Needles residencies continue to be a success.

<ReturnReference>Description of Uncertain Tax Positions Under FIN 48:</ReturnReference>
<Explanation>The Internal Revenue Service has determined that the Museum is exempt from federal income tax under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The Museum is also exempt from state income taxes. However, any unrelated business income may be subject to taxation. In accordance with the accounting standard on Accounting for Uncertainty in Income Taxes, the Museum addresses the determination of whether tax benefits claimed on a tax return should be recorded in the financial statements. Under this guidance, the Museum may recognize the tax benefit from an uncertain tax position only if it is more likely than not that the tax position will be sustained on examination by taxing authorities, based on the technical merit of the position. Examples of tax positions include the tax-exempt status of the Museum and various positions related to the potential sources of unrelated business taxable income. There were no significant unrecognized tax benefits identified or recorded as liabilities during fiscal year 2010. Open tax years subject to examination by the U.S. and state taxing authorities are for the years 2007 to 2009, which statutes expire in 2011 to 2013, respectively.</Explanation>
