Student Tuition and Fees:Hartford Seminary's degree and certificate programs serve over 400 persons from many religious traditions and geographic areas in the Greater Hartford regions, as well as nationally and internationally. We offer over 80 courses a year, both credit and non-credit, in religion, theology and ministerial practice, focusing on the three Abrahamic religions (Christianity, Islam and Judaism). These classes meet weekly for two semesters of 13 weeks, or on intensive weekend and weeklong modules in January and June sessions. By offering these courses and academic programs Hartford Seminary hopes to foster interfaith dialogue and the development of effective religious leaders both here and abroad. Our mission is to "serve God by preparing leaders, students, scholars and religious institutions" for faithful living in a pluralistic world.Hartford Seminary also offers educational outreach programs. In the 2009-2010 academic year, the Seminary offered two dozen educational outreach programs. Attendance at each event ranged from 12 to 125 people. The objective of the program is to serve core constituencies and reach out to attract new people. One hundred ninety-two new people attended an event for the first time.

Research and Grants:The Seminary's Hartford Institute for Religion Research produces research and resources that support leadership and congregational development as practical, theological activity. Our research uses the perspectives and methods of the social sciences to study religious leadership, and religious organizations and their social/cultural context. Our resources are published both traditionally and online. Our work is externally funded by, typically, multiyear grants. We currently have six major projects. Anticipated publications during the 2010/2011 academic year include American Congregations 2010, The Other 80%, Educating Religious Leaders for a Multi-Religious World, and Mega Churches 2010.

Scholarly Journals:The Muslim World is an academic publication on the Study of Islam and Christian-Muslim Relations that comes out four times per year. It is owned and edited by Hartford Seminary, and published by Wiley Blackwell. The annual Muslim World report is issued in the February following the conclusion of the year being reported. Thus, the statistics I will cite herein have been taken from the 2009 Annual Report. The number of libraries with access to The Muslim World increased significantly during 2009. Over 2,600 institutions worldwide offered paid access to the latest articles in 2009 via traditional subscriptions and consortia licensing arrangements, this is an increase of over 400 compared to 2008. A further 407 institutions had access through philanthropic programs offered to developing nations and their libraries. Over 6,500 institutions were offered access to embargoed content through EBSCO databases, nearly tripling the 2008's access through the EBSCO database. There were 607 institutional subscriptions to The Muslim World, representing a renewal rate of 97.3%, up from the previous year. Total readership of online articles in The Muslim World increased by 78% in 2009, increasing readership via Blackwell Synergy and other online hosts to 167,991 full text downloads. 847 individuals have registered to receive an email table of contents alert each time a new issue is published. The Muslim World seeks wide distribution of its journal to libraries around the world, and as large a readership as possible. We engage in no discriminatory practices regarding who has access to The Muslim World, nor who is able to submit articles for possible publication. We do offer gratis subscriptions to libraries in developing countries upon their request through philanthropic licensing deals arranged through Wiley-Blackwell. Neither the publishers nor Hartford Seminary, as editor of The Muslim World, deal directly with students in the publicaiton of this journal, unless they have chosen to submit articles for consideration. All articles, regardless by whom they have been submitted, are sent to our referred peer editorial review board. The Board selects articles on the basis of academic merit and subject suitability alone.Reviews in Religion Theology reviews most recent books in religion and theology and thereby offers an accessible, informed and up-to-date guide to contemporary developments and publishing in religion and theology, providing a forum in which the latest publications are evaluated and discussed. Hartford Seminary is in charge of editorship of the journal and Wiley-Blackwell is in charge of the production, marketing and distribution. Each year Hartford Seminary, under the editorship of Uriah Y. Kim, is responsible for four issues and the total annual editorial budget is 664 pages. RRT has 163 institutional subscriptions, and over 2,190 institutions worldwide have access to the journal via the Wiley-Blackwell sales programs. The journal Conversations in Religion and Theology is a book review journal that is published twice yearly and offered as part of the subscription to one of the Semianry's other journals, Reviews in Religion and Theology. Its distinction is that every review is followed (within the same issue) by a response from the book's author. It has 160 hard copy institutional subscriptions, and an additional 140 institutions that access it online. The majority of our readers do access individual articles online - either through their institutional ties, or on a pay per use basis, with nearly 5,000 downloads of articles in 2009. The objective of CRT is two-fold: To create scholarly conversations around important books, and to provide book reviews to help libaries and scholars in the broad discipline of theology and religious studies, and provide some guidance as to what is worth picking up.

        <Identifier>Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15a</Identifier>
<Explanation>Process for Review of the President: At Hartford Seminary the President, who is the chief executive officer of the corporation, is reviewed by a committee comprised of the Chair of the Board and the First and Second Vice Chairs(the Committee). None of the three Committee members has a conflict in this matter. The Committee meets prior to the review to prepare its observations on the performance of the President, identify areas for attention in the coming contract period and to arrive at the package of compensation and benefits. In the most recent year, the Committee had two such discussions, several email exchanges, and an in person meeting. Regarding compensation, the Committee takes into consideration the performance of the President, the overall operating environment of the school and the category of theological education. Particularly in these times, the Committee considers the financial performance of the school and the effect of the economic environment. Additionally, the Committee considers compensation trends in academic institutions generally and looks carefully at the report on compensation of peers produced by the accrediting association for theological schools. That association is the Association of Theological Schools (ATS) whose membership comprises 250 theological schools in the United States and Canada. The ATS publishes the Institutional Peer Profile Report which includes compensation levels for CEO's and other senior positions among schools it identifies as peers of Hartford Seminary. While the Committee is preparing in its way for the review, the President prepares a self assessment which is distributed to the Committee prior to the review. At the review meeting the President and Committee review the self assessment and the Committee's observations and priorities for the coming period. Finally, the compensation package is presented by the Committee and agreed to. Following the meeting, the Chair forwards the agreed upon compensation package to the Comptroller in writing. The Chair also forwards to the President and other Committee members a detailed written summary of the review and its conclusions, including the agreed upon compensation package.</Explanation>
