In FY '11, the League increased its live rate release rate from 75.3% to 80%. It received 24,475 lost and surrendered pets at its two open-admission shelters, where all pets are accepted, including 2,057 received from other shelters. It nurtured 2,841 young and sick pets in its foster program and helped 1,349 unsocialized &/or timid shelter dogs. It adopted out 16,301 pets at its shelters and through its mobile adoption unit, reunited 2,672 lost pets with owners and transferred another 562 to alternative organizations. Of the pets adopted, 7,914 had special health &/or behavioral needs. The League provided a free behavioral helpline through which it counseled 2,213 pet owners. The League also makes behavior tips available at www.ddfl.org. The League responded to calls to help animals affected by natural disasters (including those following tornadoes in AL and MO and flooding in SD), as well as those that needed to be rescued from inhumane circumstances (including cases in eastern CO, WY, MO, AZ and CA). 2221351 1076 288910 Veterinary Services: Provide necessary medical care to shelter animals; examine, evaluate and vaccinate animals before being placed up for adoption; spay or neuter all unaltered adopted cats and dogs; perform other necessary surgeries; provide free treatment to adopted animals for two weeks post-adoption. In FY 2011, the League's surgeons performed 8,269 spays and neuters on adoptable animals at its two shelters. Additionally, employee and volunteer veterinarians performed 7,472 highly subsidized spays and neuters on the League's two mobile spay/neuter units serving the general public in under-served areas. Its Health Care team cared for 4,150 animals brought in for follow-up treatment, post-adoption. It hospitalized 250 of these animals for a total of 1,524 days. 1428682 3000 57898 Community and Educational Services: Teach lessons of compassion and respect toward all living creatures; provide educational and volunteer services to the community; act as an advocate for animals. In FY '11 the League made 22,130 impressions on children and adults through 714 humane education programs (including 24 six-week Animal Adventure programs at 13 schools), held 20 sessions of Critter Camp for children and pre-teens, provided 3 junior volunteer clubs, and it taught continuing education workshops for teachers. Its 1,920 volunteers provided 201,000 hours of service. Its advocacy efforts helped defeat HB-1063 in the Colorado Legislature - a bill that would have prohibited nonprofit agencies like ours from investigating animal cruelty. The League's website received 922,070 unique visitors from all over the U.S. and other countries. Its Facebook fan base doubled to 10,000 likes, and its Twitter followers nearly doubled as well. The League's "Need a New Wingman?" video, promoting cats as pets, had nearly 21,000 views on YouTube. 805857 500000 34049 Investigative Services: Investigate reports of animal abuse, neglect or cruelty; educate the public regarding animal cruelty. In FY '11 the League's Peace Officers, who have been commissioned by the Colorado Bureau of Animal Protection, investigated 1,428 cases of cruelty, abandonment or neglect in the eight-county metro area. Although the goal is to educate the people involved and help them bring the care of their animals into compliance with the law, 10% of the cases required correction notices, and 6 summonses were issued. Rather than pursue a court case that has little chance of a conviction, the League negotiates with some owners to relinquish the animals to our care. An average of 5 animals a month benefited from this approach in FY '11.
