The school provides free education and boarding for 600 rural boarding children in both primary and middle school. The children's parents are subsistence farmers and nomads who are mostly illiterate. These children will be the first literate generation in the history of the community. Since the school first opened in 2002, these rural children have been the top performers in the county in Tibetan. Graduates of the primary school are placing first in both Tibetan and Chinese language standardized testing. Machik also continues to support programs in green technologies (a second green house was completed to feed the middle school students), teacher performance support and Tibetan-language programs for children. Machik conducted public education to Tibetans and Americans about the vital importance of engagement in Tibetan areas through outreach initiatives, Machik Weekend and many salons in the USA.
