Family Resource Center, East New York, Brooklyn:FRC is a community-based initiative to address and prevent family homelessness in East New York, Brooklyn. The FRC is a "one-stop shopping" community resource, where individuals and families who are currently homeless, as well as those at risk for homelessness, receive the assistance, training, and support they need. First and foremost, we help families living in shelters rapidly transition back into apartments. We also provide emergency assistance to those in the East New York, Brooklyn community at risk of losing their homes. In addition, we offer ongoing supportive services and skill-building that address clients' housing needs, but also their needs in other areas including education, career development, financial literacy, nutrition, health and wellness, and assistance accessing medical and mental health care. Family Resource Center provides assistance to over 2,500 families. Last year the center provided intensive counseling and housing assistance to over 650 families to avoid eviction and screened more than 3,000 community residents for food assistance programs.

Furnish A Future:New York City's only free furniture bank for those who are rebuilding their lives after leaving City shelters, Furnish a Future helps families get back on their feet by providing basic furnishings and household goods. More than the economic assistance this gives, the real power of this program is to help restore dignity for those climbing back from homelessness. By promoting self-worth and a place of sanctuary, Furnish a Future helps promote housing stability. Last year more than 2,000 households received free furnishings and home goods through the program. Additionally, staff followed up with families after they moved into their apartments to help them access resources and assistance available in their communities.

Positive Step:Positive Step provides intensive case management and supportive services to homeless and formerly homeless individuals infected or affected by HIV/AIDS. Case management helps our clients find housing and access quality health care, while workshops, support groups and legal services help them understand their rights, navigate available services, and overcome barriers to safe housing. Positive Step services are offered at PFTH sites in Manhattan and East New York (Brooklyn), at shelters affiliated with New York City's HIV/AIDS Services Administration (HASA), and at SRO hotels citywide. Each year, we connect approximately 350 homeless PLWHAs and persons at risk with housing and access to other direct services like HIV primary care and treatment, benefits advocacy, crisis intervention, support groups, and legal advocacy. Positive Step also provides free rapid testing and HIV/AIDS prevention education to over 3,000 people annually. And in 2000, we launched our SISTA project, which seeks to prevent HIV transmission in African American women using a group-level, peer-based model of education and support developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This year, the project added two new groups, one for Hispanic women and the other for minority women who are already HIV positive, serving 450 women.

Emergency Shelter Network:The ESN is a network of 64 emergency overnight shelters, 3 soup kitchens, and a food pantry. The Partnership coordinated this extensive network until 2008; we now focus our efforts on sustaining the capacity of these shelters to provide safe and nutritious meals to their guests. The Partnership's full-time Nutrition Resource Manager oversees the food service at all of the sites and provides logistical and educational support to the network. The shelters serve dinner each evening when their guests arrive, and breakfast before departure in the morning. The two soup kitchens provide one hot meal each day to people who are homeless. The food pantry is open to the public and provides groceries to an at-risk population. These walk-in programs are open to the public and strive to serve as many people in need as possible. Under the supervision of The Partnership's nutritionist shelters served 500,000 meals last year.
