LeAp's programs use an interdisciplinary, arts-based, hands-on approach to teaching the academic curriculum. In addition to programs that develop students' creativity, cultural sensitivity, and critical thinking skills, LeAp offers standards-based literacy, social studies, math, and science programs designed to increase students' standardized test scores. LeAp tailors every program to the specific needs of schools and individual classrooms, and our extensive available programming includes one-day assemblies, in-school and afterschool residencies of varying lengths, professional development and curricular materials for teachers, and parental involvement workshops. LeAp brought our specially trained teaching artists-including animators, poets, musicians, video artists, photographers, sculptors, muralists, dancers, and more-to public school students to enhance their art skills and creativity while implementing the academic curriculum. In 2009-2010, LeAp provided approximately 1,200 New York City public school classes with residencies ranging from one-session workshop-style programs to residencies of 40 sessions or more, with most programs falling in the 10-40 sessions range. In addition, LeAp teaching artists delivered 155 afterschool and out-of-school-time programs, 54 assemblies, 214 parent workshops-at schools and in shelters and other community facilities-139 professional development workshops, and 8 programs for students attending hospital schools. We worked with about 55,000 students, 5,800 teachers, and 5,300 parents. LeAp worked predominantly with underserved, minority students: approximately 42% of the students we served were Hispanic, 38% were African American, 11% were Asian, 8% were White, and 1% belonged to other ethnic groups. Of these students, about 98% attended Title I-eligible schools, more than 50% came from single-parent families, and almost 70% tested below grade level in reading and writing. Additionally, many of the children we worked with were bilingual, newly arrived immigrants, or English language learners (ELL). Any LeAp program can be adapted for students with special needs, including ELL and bilingual students, special education.
