NWP sites provide high-quality professional development programs to teachers in a variety of disciplines and at all levels, from early childhood through university. NWP is a network of more than 200 university-based sites located in all fifty states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Co-directed by faculty from the local university and K-12 schools, each NWP site develops a leadership cadre of teachers through an invitational summer institute, and designs and delivers customized professional development programs for local schools, districts, and higher education institutions. NWP sites annually conduct more than 7,000 professional development activities, serve more than 130,000 participants, and reach millions of students.NWP coordinates ongoing leadership development programs, assures program quality, reviews and provides technical assistance for local sites, and orchestrates the long-range planning process for the NWP network of sites. These projects include special purpose network awards to writing project sites for increasing access for teachers in underserved areas, publishing and disseminating resource materials, and electronic media programs designed to make more widely available the knowledge resulting from all NWP activities.As a national network, NWP has conducted ongoing research on the effectiveness of its professional development programs through a series of quasi-experimental studies involving pre/post assessment of students' writing, comparison group designs, and a national independent scoring of student writing performance. Latest results from independent national scorings of student writing across 16 different studies show that NWP students' improvement outpaces that of students in comparison groups in 15 of the 16 studies. In addition, NWP has a team of people engaged in technical assistance that includes monitoring of grant recipients' activities as well as their A-133 single audit reporting. It also sometimes includes site visits targeted at recipients needing more in-depth support, which could include additional specialized training for recipient-institution personnel.
