Massachusetts state law allows the Society to appropriate as much of the net appreciation as is prudent considering the Society's long and short-term needs, present and anticipated financial requirements, expected total return on its investments, price level trends, and general economic conditions. Under the Society's spending policy, 4.5 percent of the three-year average of the fair value of the investments (excluding investments designated as current assets) at the beginning of each of the previous three fiscal years is appropriated to support operations. In the event of a significant market decline, the Society will consider all factors relevant to the stated goal in determining any change to the appropriation as allowed by UPMIFA. The Society has an investment policy, which combined with the spending rate, attempts to provide a predictable stream of returns combined with asset protection. Endowment assets include those assets restricted by donors that the Society must hold in perpetuity. Under the Society's investment policy and spending rate, both approved by the Board of Trustees, the endowment assets are invested in a manner that is intended to produce an inflation-adjusted return in excess of the spending rate over a long period of time. Actual returns in any given year may vary. To satisfy its long-term rate-of-return objectives, the Society relies on a total return strategy in which investment returns are achieved through both capital appreciation (realized and unrealized) and current yield (interest and dividends). The Investment Committee, advised by a leading third party investment advisor, is responsible for selecting the investment managers of the Society's portfolio. The Investment Committee's strategy is to include an array of different strategy and investment managers for the portfolio to minimize risk while providing investment returns exceeding industry benchmarks.
