OUR DOLLY PARTON'S IMAGINATION LIBRARY (DPIL) PROGRAM PROVIDES BOOKS ONCE A MONTH TO ENROLLED CHILDREN 5 YEARS OF AGE OR YOUNGER AT NO COST TO THE FAMILY. RESEARCH SHOWS THAT SIMPLY READING TO A CHILD HELPS DEVELOP THEIR LITERACY SKILLS. YET MOST HOMES IN POVERTY HAVE ON AVERAGE 4 BOOKS OR LESS. DPIL INCREASES THE NUMBER OF HOMES AND NEIGHBORHOOD ENVIROMENTS THAT ARE RICH WITH EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCES AND ENCOURAGES PARENTS TO READ WITH THEIR CHILDREN. AT THE END OF 2010, A TOTAL OF 4,842 CHILDREN HAD BEEN SERVED THROUGH DPIL. IN 2010 WE ALSO CONDUCTED A STUDY ON PARENTS' SATISFACTION WITH DPIL AND THE PRE READING SKILLS THEY ARE SEEING IN THEIR CHILDREN. THE RESULTS SHOWED THAT AFTER ENROLLING IN THE PROGRAM, PARENTS INCREASED THE FREQUENCY OF READING WITH THEIR CHILDREN, FEEL THEIR CHILDREN ARE MORE PREPARED TO ENTER KINDERGARTEN AS A RESULT OF THE PROGRAM, AND INDICATED THAT THEIR CHILD ENJOYS READING MORE SINCE ENROLLING IN THE PROGRAM. 308628 The vision for United Way of Acadiana is to build a stronger Acadiana & advance the common good by mobilizing communities to improve people's lives. The Volunteer Center is intergral to our mission - "Volunteers.Resources.Solution"- & is the primary conduit for civic engagement & seflessly giving back to the community. The Volunteer Center uses 1-800-Volunteer to connect unaffiliated volunteers with available opportunities, & strives to align those opportunities with UWA's community impact issue areas. The Volunteer Center maintains a base of active volunteers in order to respond quickly & effectively to community-wide disasters. In 2010, 1940 people participated in direct volunteer opportunities, providing over 8,124 hours of service at an estimated value of over $169,386. 76936 Earn it! Keep It! Save It! is an initiative that promotes individuals & families becoming more financially stable by working to ensure that individuals can increase their income, build personal saving & acquire appreciating assets. The first phase of EKS focuses on increasing awareness of the Earned Income Tax Credit & utilization of free volunteer income tax assistance. Because of EKS & United Way of Acadiana's partnership with 12 VITA sites, 1013 individuals claimed $1.8 million in EITC in 2010. UWA launched phase 2 in 2010. It partnered with 8 financial literacy sites. In total, 146 individuals participated in training and 11 opened a checking/savings account. In addition, UWA is currently offering the FamilyWize free prescription drug discount cards, which provides an average discount of 35%, or $20, per prescription for medications not already covered by by insurance, Medicaid, Medicare or other benefit plans. The FamilyWize card is accepted at most pharmacies in our service area & does not require any type of enrollment or activation for use. The cards can be used by anyone, regardless of age, income, or residency who does not have insurance or prescription coverage. The funds may not be expended for any other purpose without prior written approval by UWA. The funded agency must provide proof of 501c3 status, an IRS Form 990; agency by-laws, financial audits and management letters, board minutes, and accreditation certifications. Form 990, Part VI, Line 19 Form 990, Part VI, Line 19: Other Organization Documents Publicly Available United Way of Acadiana makes available for public viewing, upon request, financial documentation that may include but not be limited to, articles of incorporation; annual audit; Form 990; and all policies and procedures. Form 990, Part VI, Line 15b Form 990, Part VI, Line 15b: Compensation Review and Approval Process for Officers and Key Employees The process for determining compensation of key employees as reported in Part VII includes an initial review and approval by the Operational Excellence & Executive Committees. The Executive Committee presents a recommendation to the Board of Directors Committee for review and approval.The compensation level of the key employees is based on comparision to the median salary of a position of similar responsibilities within United Way of America system and a comparison with the Louisiana Association of Nonprofit Organizations data. The review and approval processes are documented through each committee and board meeting minutes. Such action is documented in the minutes of the meeting. Board members annually submit a disclosure form regarding Conflict of Interest. Governing Body and Management - 8a; 8bThe Executive Committee consists of the officers of the Board of Directors. The Chairman of the Board serves as chairperson of the Executive Committee. The Executive committee has the power to make rules and regulations for the conduct of its business. In matters requiring immediate action, the Executive committee may act on behalf of the Board of Directors, except to amend bylaws; adopt a plan of merger or consolidation; sell, lease, exchange, mortgage, pledge or make any other disposition of any of the property and assets of the organization. The Executive Committee's responsibilities include submitting recommendations for Board actions regarding the management and administration of the affairs of the organization, recommendations for Board action on the United Way's internal budget, and recommendations for Board action on the employment of the President.
