Circle of Parents Circle of Parents® offered free, weekly mutual self-help support to 156 support groups throughout 2010 (46% increase from 2009!). Statewide, there were 94 parent support groups and 62 children's programs serving 2708 participants. Female participants outnumbered male participants by 63% to 37%. Ages of the 1056 children participating in children's programs ranged from birth to eighteen years of age. Of the 1652 participants in parent support and education groups, most were Caucasian (46%), Black/African American (19%), or Hispanic/Latino (15%). American Indian participants made up (6%) of the groups, Somali /other African (5%), and (9%) of groups consisted of Asian Americans. A total of 3104 groups were held with an average of 8 participants per group. Our Circle of Parents program® saw an incredible increase in interest, trainings and development across Minnesota. New partnerships and initiatives emerged within Tribal communities focusing on parenting teenagers and the increasing number of teenage parents. Additional initiatives intensified our focus on strengthening families and continued parenting from the inside (relationships between incarcerated parents and their children).
Parent Leadership: The Civic Parent Leadership Program provides an opportunity for parents attending the Circle of Parents© mutual self-help groups to participate in the organization's Parent Leadership Team, become members of the PCAMN board of directors, and represent Minnesota on the National Circle of Parents© Parents as Leaders Team. Additionally the program engages community parents to become parent leader consultants advising the Minnesota Department of Human Services Child Safety and Permanency Division. The Parents as Civic Leaders program allows PCAMN to enhance our commitment to shared leadership. Through trainings parents recognize their own individual leadership skills and how those skills can be utilized to impact their families and communities. Twenty Parent leader volunteers contributed 1,109 hours in 2010. Out of those 20 volunteers, five have been engaged in contract work in 2011 with PCAMN to provide their expertise in testifying, training, and/or organizing events and consulting to other local and national organizations. Additionally, 393 people participated in Parent Cafes offered throughout the state, and 100 people attended Minnesota's National Parent Leadership Month Awards. (480 Participants)

Special Events: Our special events brought together hundreds of families, children, celebrities, professionals and supportive communities to raise awareness of child abuse and neglect. In particular, our 10th annual Walk to End Child Abuse was held at Midway Stadium, home of the St. Paul Saints. Nearly 400 walkers and volunteers from all over the state of Minnesota registered to walk. It was a terrific day of family fun. Children of all ages participated in a host of fun events, many new to the Walk this year. The 22nd Annual Radiothon to End Child Abuse educated and raised funds from thousands of radio listeners by broadcasting child abuse prevention information for 24 hours over 11 radio stations reaching 14 North central Minnesota counties. The Radiothon reaches more than 212,000 listeners. The Radiothon is a collaborative effort of Omni Broadcasting, Child Abuse Prevention Councils in the 14 counties, and Prevent Child Abuse Minnesota. "An Evening for the Children" annual gala attended by 177 people was a wonderful event at the Mendakota Country Club. This event continues to grow each year and has become a wonderful night out for people with dinner and dancing. (212,500 viewers).

Advocacy: PCAMN has an active Advocacy Committee of volunteers and Board members that advocates for child abuse prevention and improving child well-being in public policy. A position statement is created at each year including the policy positions of Prevent Child Abuse America and those unique to Minnesota's children. Positions such as comprehensive health care for all our children, funding for prevention programs such as Circle of Parents®, crisis nurseries, home visiting, and adequate funding for child welfare programs are included. The statement is distributed to all state senators and representatives and our national delegation. PCAMN kicks off National Child Abuse Awareness month on April 1st each year. During 2010, we held a Healing Field at the state capitol with 1,000 American flags and 750 pinwheels to raise awareness of the issue of child abuse and its prevention. Legislative alerts are sent several times a year to interested constituencies and we promote/support legislation consistent with our stated positions. We participated with the Children's Defense Fund in the 10-10-10 rally at the state capitol to highlight 10 key issues affecting children. Our staffs serve on the Joint Religious Legislative Coalition's Interfaith Child Advocacy Network; the MN Social Service Association's Legislative Committee, and other task forces to promote appropriate legislation.
