All of these grants are to improve opportunities for at-risk youth aged 10-24 in emerging market countries.EMpower's first online publication was produced: It's Her Business: A Handbook for Preparing Young, At-risk Women to Become Entrepreneurs is available for download in English and Spanish (Manos a la obra, amigas: Fomentando emprendimientos entre jovenes marginadas!), www.itsherbusiness.org, also linked to EMpower's website. The handbook was designed to help developing country organizations working with young, at-risk women boost their opportunities to earn income. It helps them determine whether to offer entrepreneurship programming and, if so, the fundamentals to do it well, taking into account the special needs of young women living in poverty. The handbook is a product of EMpower's Girls Entrepreneurship Trust, supported by the Nike Foundation. It was developed out of two regional workshops EMpower held with grantee partners working on income generation, and from substantial contributions from other experts and EMpower staff.EMpower initiated work on a global workshop held in Rio, Brazil in July 2010 called: Leveling the Playing Field. Gathering 22 participants from 11 grantee organizations around the world, EMpower convened organizations using sports as a means to convene young people, especially girls and young women. During the first of this two-year initiative we organized two regional workshops involving practitioners of entrepreneurship programs and young women participants: one in Peru for Latin American grantee partners, and the other, in India for our African and Asian partners. Through these workshops, we disseminated vital information for training young women as entrepreneurs as well as gathered lessons on what has worked best and what is needed in their environments. The second year of this initiative, completed during this reporting period, saw the drafting and dissemination of our first publication: A "tool kit", chock full of tools, tips, resources and lessons learned to help local organizations working with young women in developing countries guide them in considering income generation options, launching a business, and achieving financial independence. It is a downloadable handbook entitled "It's Her Business: A handbook for preparing young, at-risk women to be entrepreneurs" and can be found at www.itsherbusiness.org. Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11 The Form 990 has in the past been reviewed by the Finance/Audit Committee after it was filed. The Finance/Audit Committee consists of three Board Directors, one of whom is the Treasurer. This meeting takes place with the Executive Director and the Independent Auditor. As of this filing, the Finance/Audit Committee will review the Form 990 before the filing. Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12c Conflicts arise when Directors of the governing body propose a certain grantee to be considered for funding. If, after staff due diligence, the organization is recommended to the Board for approval, the referring Director must recuse him/herself from the approval process. Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15 The process for determining compensation for the Executive Director is undertaken by the Executive Committee. In addition to a performance review by the Committee based on a Self-Assessment, 360 Feedback from staff and other Board Directors, and a meeting with the Executive Director to establish future goals and measure performance against past goals; comparative information is used to determine rationale for salary level. The last assessment was undertaken in February 2010. The Executive Committee is currently undergoing a performance appraisal of the Executive Director.
