LEAD Out of School Program for Elementary Age ChildrenLeadership, Education, Athletic Development, and Out of School programming provides essential life skills and learning during times when elementary age children are out of school. This program achieves our mission, by providing many different learning opportunities which empower and inspire children, strengthen families, build healthier bodies and minds that are drug and alcohol free. Using the national poverty guidelines, this program serves all children, especially those most at risk, by using a sliding fee structure and scholarships for children when parents are unable to afford the low cost program fees. The program uses the 40 Developmental Assets as a guide for our staff and volunteers to help children develop into caring, educated, skilled teens and capable young adults. Character development becomes fun for children, substance abuse prevention and life skills prepares children to make healthy choices, and understand the consequences of unhealthy choices.Tutoring in reading, math, spelling, writing and science help children enjoy and succeed in school. This program supports the needs of families by providing a safe, wholesome learning environment so parents know their children are actively engaged in meaningful learning activities and well cared for before and after school, as well as during all school holidays and all summer.LEAD Out of School Program provides five hours M-F of educational enrichment, art, computer, dance, drama, music, and all sports from 3:00 p.m. during the school year and provides ten hours of programming each day during the summer. This program served 728 elementary age children from the Island and surrounding communities. They participated in life enriching before and after school programs and summer/winter camps this year for 268 days of service.

Reach & Lead TeensResponsible Educated Adolescents Can Help (REACH) and Leadership, education athletic discipline (LEAD) - Achieves our mission by educating minds, building healthier bodies, strengthening families and fostering volunteerism. The REACH & LEAD program provides prevention education/leadership development and fitness programs to youth ages 12 to 17. Island teens are at risk for being victims of or perpetrators of youth crime, violence, sex, substance abuse, poor academic performance, school dropout before graduation, etc. Our at-risk youth struggle with complex issues and scenarios that are brought on by negative peers, family members, and our transient community. The Reach program builds skills in such areas as problem-solving, conflict resolution, self-control, leadership, and responsible decision-making.REACH programs educate minds by helping teens get involved and excited about in school activities such as reading, debate, math, and science. They also help teens succeed in and graduate from high school; explore career options; build healthier bodies through health programs that educate teens on the problems associated with teen pregnancy, alcohol and drug use and dependency; and engage in sports and recreation programs that contribute to teens becoming healthier adults and foster volunteerism. Program includes community service activities, a youth council, and weekly discussion groups regarding adolescent concerns for girls and for boys, youth fitness program, sports, supervised social activities, a mentoring program with younger youth, after school program and educational outings. The Leadership Education Athletic Development (LEAD) program promotes health, fitness and athletic development through sports, including soccer, basketball, flag football and a variety of discipline-building sports camps. Over 780 teens and young adults participated in comunity service, LEAD and REACH activities through out the year.

Family TherapyAchieving our mission by educating minds and strengthening families. Today 17% of Manatee County citizens are without health insurance and many more have insurance that does not cover professional therapy. The Center's Family Therapy Program was created to meet the professional counseling needs of the uninsured and underinsured families of Manatee County especially at risk youth and their families. Two licensed Masters degreed therapists provide individual, family and group therapy and educational workshops to help participants work on relationship issues, develop coping skills for life's many difficulties, find new ways of understanding their lives and its challenges and thus lead more fulfilling lives for themselves and their children. The outcomes/benefits of the program are (1) that the participants in counseling will grow in the areas of self esteem, autonomy, relationship skills, communication skills, parenting and daily living skills and therefore become more able to attend to the demands of parenting their children, and (2) that the children in individual or family counseling and in the life skills groups will learn new communication and behavior skills that can be applied in all areas of their lives, and that they will grow in coping skills, self esteem and self confidence. The program activities chosen to implement these goals are individual and family therapy parenting skills groups or other educational support groups for those who are parenting children and life skills groups for elementary school children. This program provides these and other therapy services to over 120 families and bereavement and elder care support services for 23 elderly adults.

Elder ProgramsOur adult and senior programs fulfill our mission by educating minds and supporting families who care for their parents and well as keeping bodies healthier. We do this in a great variety of ways; we provide the Cancer Project whole food cooking classes which teaches nutrition, helps adults lose weight and stay healthy, many active fitness and wellness programs.Active seniors play a major role in providing Community Center elderly services and adult programs. Many of our seniors also volunteer with our youth as coaches, teachers and mentors. This intergenerational program builds respect, responsibility and reposefulness in our youth and also provides great benefits for the volunteers.Grief and care givers support groups are led by a retired PHD in Psychology. The Center also partners with local colleges and universities to provide mind stimulating life long learning opportunities. Many of our seniors also teach a variety of classes which help older adults and elderly build new friendships, stay healthy and active in their homes and in our community. The Center provides a great variety of quantity of adult programs annually. As the needs for these programs grow we are planning to find more grants to insure our ability to insure seniors on limited fixed incomes will never be turned away from the Anna Maria Island Community Center. Over 2,800 adults and seniors served in life long learning programs and community activities.
