The case numbers represent a 9.9% increase in cases from last fiscal year. Approximately 14.54% of the total cases involved consumer issues, 39.4% involved family issues (58% of these were PFAs), 26.1% involved housing issues, 6% involved income maintenance issues (SSI, food stamps, TANF), 8.3% involved employment (including unemployment), and the remaining 5.66% involved such issues as health, juvenile guardianship and individual rights. Of the cases handled, 84% were for individuals between the ages of 18 and 59, 14.3% for individuals age 60 and over and 1.7% for those under the age of 18. Most of these individuals were females (73.8%). Sixty-two percent (62%) of the clients were white, 36% were black and 2% of the clients were other ethnic groups such as Asian, Hispanic, Russian and Native American. We closed 12,156 cases. Of the cases closed, 63.5% were resolved with advice and limited assistance; 28.9% were negotiated settlement or litigation, 7.4% with extended services and the other .2% closed as other. NLSA obtained a total of $1,081,395.00 in back awards/settlements for clients along with $198,931.00 in total monthly benefit payments to which they were entitled. NLSA continued implementation of several collaborative projects based on "models that work" - successful projects operated by other legal aid programs and innovative projects that themselves can serve as "models that work" for other programs statewide and beyond. Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15 The Personnel Committee of the Board does an evaluation and salary comparability review of the Executive Director every 2 years. The recommendations and evaluations are presented to the full Board for approval. The last action of the Board was December 2009. Managers are paid a salary increment for the position and receive the equivalent raises of staff attorneys under the collective bargaining agreement. The Assistant Director, Controller and Director of Performance and Compliance receive compensation based on responsibilities and seniority determined by the Executive Director with advice and consent of the NLSA Board President and President-Elect. The Development Coordinator is paid under a shared compensation contract with the Pennsylvania Legal Aid Network which is set by the Pennsylvania Legal Aid Network.
