<MissionDescription>Heartsong's mission is to provide clinically-based music and art therapy programs that seek to enhance the functioning level and quality of life for children with special needs and their families. Located in Westchester County, New York, but drawing children from throughout the New York metropolitan area, Heartsong provides its program services on Saturdays from September to June at Westchester School 29 in Yonkers and at Good Counsel Academy Elementary School in White Plains. Our outreach programs, volunteer opportunities and family support services are available throughout the calendar year. Those who benefit the most from our programs and services are those families whose children have been diagnosed with autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, developmental delays, and multiple disabilities. Heartsong meets a critical need for community-based art and music therapy for these special needs children.</MissionDescription>

<Description>Heartsong has served more than 1,000 children since it started 19 years ago. This school year we are providing art and music therapy on Saturdays from September through June at Westchester Hill School 29 in Yonkers and at Family Services of Westchester in White Plains. Heartsong's unique therapeutic program and group format improve emotional, physical, sensory and cognitive development, and bolster each child's social skills while reducing isolation felt by so many of these children. We offer this program on a low-cost or no-cost basis; those families with the most financial need receive this service free of charge. Parents do not simply drop off their children for the Saturday program, but stay at the two sites for mutual support and companionship. Periodically we provide educational sessions on wide-ranging topics that have included behavior management, gluten-free diets, living with adolescents, and trusts and estates. Marion Anderson and the Director of Clinical Services, Josette Banks, are available on Saturday mornings to meet one-on-one with parents to discuss various issues, such as accessing Big Brother Big Sister services, financial assistance and insurance, health resources, social work services, and educational resources. We will offer six weeks of art therapy during the summer of 2011. Now in its second year, we continue to offer tthe Heartstars sibling support program for siblings of Heartsong children to gather, share experiences and have fun. Up to twelve siblings meet once a month at the Yonkers site; we will begin the same service in White Plains during 2011. Heartstars is based on Sib Shops, a national effort dedicated to the life-long concerns of the brothers and sisters of people who have special health, developmental or mental health needs. Throughout our 19-year history, a strong volunteer component has enabled Heartsong to maintain a low child-to-staff ratio in its programs. Each volunteer works one-on-one with a Heartsong child, developing a close relationship that benefits both the child and the volunteer. Our volunteer coordinator has expanded the training we provide to our volunteers. Heartsong is bringing art and music therapy into communities during the school day and on weekdays, after school. We are in the Ardsley and Rye/Blind Brook School Districts, the Holistic Learning Center in Eastchester, and the Mamaroneck Avenue Elementary School, reaching more than 100 special needs children. We are creating a similar program in Bronxville public schools that will serve 18 special needs children who are enrolled in these schools. This is set to begin later in 2011. The needs of the children served have shifted dramatically over the past several years with 55% of the Heartsong population now diagnosed as having an autism disorder. Heartsong's focus on social and communication skills is especially important for children with autism, and their families. Heartsong has designed a video training library as a resource for families in our program and our staff. In 2010-2011 we will implement an enhanced in-house professional development program for therapists, with case studies presented twice a month on Saturdays. In 2009 Heartsong's Board and staff embarked on a strategic planning process that is in the final stages. We worked with consultants from the Volunteer Center and established short- and long-term strategic goals. As a result, Heartsong updated financial systems; improved its clinical intake tools and processes, allowing us to better assess children's progress and revise treatment plans; and, most recently, formed a strategic alliance with Family Services of Westchester a not-for-profit organization dedicated to strengthening and supporting families, children and individuals through all stages of the life cycle. FSW provides a broad range of social and mental health services, including family, group and individual counseling; respite care; early intervention; and physical and occupational therapy. FSW was founded in 1954 and serves 30,000 individuals each year through its 50-plus programs. This collaboration will enable Heartsong to: 1) increase our impact by adding afterschool and weekday sessions to the Saturday-only program; 2) address the needs of teens who age out of our core services; and 3) move the organization to a location where, under one roof, our children and families can find the multiple services that they need that are not part of our central mission. Now, with six dedicated classrooms at FSW, we will expand our unique program in ways that respond to families' feedback and urgent needs. With these revitalized programs, processes and directions, Heartsong is poised to move through 2011 and beyond, continuing to respond to Westchester's special needs children and their families and developing new services as the needs grow and change.</Description>

When the Form 990 has been prepared, reviewed by management and is ready to be filed with the Internal Revenue Service, it is electronically sent to the board members of the organization for any comments. <Explanation>The salary of the executive director was determined by the board at her hire date in February 2008. In the fall of 2008, the executive director's salary was cut by 15% due to economic conditions. In her employment contract it states that there could be the possibility of a bonus paid based on performance, but it was dependent on the financial condition of the organization at that time. In October 2010, the board voted to award the director a bonus of $10,000 based on her performance. The executive committee consulted with the advisory board on incentive bonuses for executive directors at comparable organizations. In addition, the committee reviewed other Form 990's from similar organizations, as well as conducted a compensation study in order to determine the amount.</Explanation>
