The ongoing work of the museum includes the preservation, cataloguing, and research into the works of art in the permanent collection. 1568264 12000 856780 The Museum's Northwest Film Center conducts an active film and video exhibition program, operates the oldest and most comprehensive film school in Oregon and the Northwest, and has one of the premiere youth media arts residency programs in the nation. During the year, over 10,000 students were impacted by our programs, either by direct instruction or through public programs. 421397 Museum Education Programs aim to broaden and deepen access to art to diverse audiences, and to facilitate visitors' learning about art both on and offsite. More than 23,500 students and teachers toured through exhibitions and the collections during the 2009-2010 school year. The Museum also made available an iPod-based multimedia tour of the permanent collection and select exhibitions free to all visitors, held 29 public lectures and symposia, presented free family days for over 8,000 visitors cumulatively, and continued to offer art-making with local artists to children at the museum on Sundays. The collections are maintained for public exhibition, education, and research in furtherance of public service, rather than for financial gain. The Museum's collections, acquired through purchase and donation, are not recognized as assets in the accompanying financial statements. Purchases of collection items are recorded in the year in which the items were acquired as decreases in unrestricted or temporarily restricted net assets, depending on the source of the assets used to purchase the items and whether those assets were restricted by donors. Contributed collection items are not reflected in the financial statements. Pursuant to Museum policy, proceeds from the sale of art and related insurance settlements are recorded as temporarily restricted net assets for the acquisition of works of art. Part III, Line 4: The permanent collection is at the core of the Museum's mission to collect and preserve a variety of art for the enrichment of present and future generations. Displayed in 112,000 square feet of galleries, the museum's collection of more than 50,000 objects reflects the history of art from ancient times to today. The collection is distinguished for its holdings of arts of the native peoples of North America, english silver, and the graphic arts. An active collecting institution, the museum devotes 90 percent of its galleries to the permanent collection. The governance committee of the board of directors is in charge of monitoring all potential conflict of interests.
