The Alliance for Children's Rights offers free legal service, community education and advocacy for impoverished, abused and neglected children in Los Angeles. The Alliance's primary objective is to provide stability to foster children by helping them obtain healthcare, educational services and financial support so that more of them reach permanency through adoption, legal guardianship or by returning safely to their biological family. The NextSTEP Program is a safety net for youth ages 16-22, empowering them with skill building workshops, access to resources, advocacy and mentoring to overcome barriers preventing them from obtaining employment, education, housing and healthcare. For youth with severe disabilities, The Alliance secures SSI benefits to pay for housing and medical care to help avoid homelessness. Together with pro bono attorneys and community volunteers, The Alliance is helping to change the outcomes for these youth. 698531 Healthcare & Public Benefits: Children who have been abused or neglected by their parents have a tremendous need for a stable home and access to healthcare. Caregivers, particularly relatives, who step up to provide for these children are often low income and can become overwhelmed, putting that essential stability at risk. Many of the children have medical and mental health issues. The Alliance obtains appropriate funding and services for these children so their caregivers can access critical supports like counseling, medical equipment, adequate housing, and respite care. Securing resources and access to appropriate doctors and therapists can often mean the difference between permanent, safe homes and struggling, unstable ones. 461173 Adoption & Guardianship: Adoption gives foster children a chance to be part of a permanent family. With the help of pro bono attorneys, The Alliance overcomes barriers and delays for children waiting for their adoption to finalize. Working with adoptive families to identify the health, educational and funding needs of the child, The Alliance completes one third of all adoptions of children in foster care. The Adoption Day program has become a national model. Legal Guardianship is filed in probate court for children being raised by kin and family friends outside the foster care system. The Alliance helps hundreds of caregivers become legal guardians and gain access to resources each year. 988515 Education: Nowhere are the injustices and challenges for impoverished and foster children more evident than in their ability to receive an education. It is estimated that nearly one half of foster children have learning and behavioral disabilities or developmental delays, often as a result of improper prenatal care, drug and alcohol exposure, physical and emotional abuse. This program is aimed at leveling the playing field for children who are learning impaired and developmentally delayed, but seldom receive the benefit of an Individual Education Program tailored to meet their special needs. The Alliance provides direct advocacay and representation, as well as training to empower caregivers to help children obtain an equitable education and early childhood development interventions. System-Wide Reform and Advocacy: The Alliance for Children's Rights provides children with a voice for system-side change. Through education, advocacy, litigation, and support of sound policy, The Alliance promotes protocols and practices that are in the best interest of children and challenges those that are not.
