Student financial aid was provided to nearly every student through a variety of scholarships and grants, supporting the pursuit of the degrees. Formal classroom instruction was provided by approximately 75 fulltime teaching faculty members. The faculty-student ratio is approximaetly 1:11, providing for personalized attention and small class enrollments. To assist the instruction programs of the College and to support the academic success of all students, academic services were provided through the library, academic computing, The Powell Resource Center (providing tutors, skill development, workshops, academic counseling, career services, personal counseling services, and academic accommodations for students with documented disabilities), and the Office of the Academic Dean. Quantitative Literacy and Writing Labs are made available to students on an ongoing basis. According to measurements of student satisfaction conducted by the Student Satisfaction Inventory (SSI), Emory & Henry students rate their college well above the national average for four-year institutions with regard to the quality of the instruction they receive and the effectiveness of their academic advisors. Academic highlights for the year included the continuance of the implementation of the new core curriculum and the beginning of the development of a physical therapy program. In addition, a new program was offered to students providing the opportunity to earn at least 12 hours of college credit in a single college semester while thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail. The experience offers the students a synthesis of academic learning and outdoor adventure in an intensive goal-oriented journey that will challenge the students both physically and intellectually, engaging the students in real-world competencies. 4721811 7339776 Auxiliary services were provided to all students. Just over 700 students were provided housing and meals. A new 119-bed residence hall was opened in the fall. Additional dorms moved to a co-ed platform and a first year village was created. Various upgrades were made to several dorms. Utilization of the new campus OneCard system continued to expand which provides students easy-access to dorms, meals, and other necessities across campus through one consolidated method. Books, art and school supplies, and essential grocery and health products were provided through the campus bookstore and mercantile for the convenience of every student. 4955139 404694 Various services were provided to students through many programs and offices, including athletics, intramural sports, the Outdoor Program, the Martin Brock Student Center, Admissions and Financial Aid, the Registrar, the Student Health Center, the Appalachian Center for Community Service, the Bonner Program, and the Office of the Dean of Students. Nearly 870 students received some form of financial aid through various scholarships and grants, providing them the opportunity to pursue a higher education. Many of those students also qualified to work on campus and by doing go, earned valuable work experiences while learning. Additional opportunities were provided to all students for community service which included a variety of service projects. Every freshman begins their educational experience by participating in service learning projects. Throughout each student's academic career, community service opportunities are available through local school systems and local communities. In April, 2011, a tornado devastated a local community near Emory.
