Projects are taken through a design and approvals process, in partnership with the City of New York Department of Parks & Recreation, and are supervised during construction by the Prospect Park Alliance. Projects designed by the Prospect Park Alliance have won a number of prestigious awards. During the year ended 6/30/11, the restoration of the JFK monument at Grand Army Plaza, the renovation of the Vanderbilt Playground and the construction of the artificial turf soccer field at the Parade Ground were all completed. Designs of new bathrooms at the Parade Ground and at the Wellhouse and the renovation of the Tennis House were completed. Construction of Lakeside and the second phase of the Lakeshore project was started, including the demolition of the Wollman Rink. 1436138 0 53345 Prospect Park Alliance partners with the City of New York Department of Parks & Recreation in caring for the natural environment contained within the Park. The Arboriculture Crew cares for the roughly 40,000 trees of Prospect Park, including almost 150 different species which make up Brooklyn's only forest. The Park provides priceless natural habitat for wildlife and Park visitors, as well as a much-needed migration stop for thousands of birds. (Prospect Park has been designated an Important Bird Area by the National Audubon Society.) The Park's 250 acres of natural areas are maintained and monitored year-round by the Alliance's Natural Resources Crew, which works with volunteers and the Woodlands Youth Crew to restore new sections in the Park designated as natural areas. The Natural Resources Crew also engages youth through its work with both the Woodlands Youth Crew and the Brooklyn Academy of Science and the Environment. During the fiscal year 2011, 458 trees were pruned, 920 trees, 20,730 herbaceous plants and 1,886 shrubs were planted. 5 acres of turf were restored. The Alliance provides maintenance staff at the Parade Ground which was renovated and restored with public capital funds. 1141614 0 160485 Prospect Park Alliance offers educational programs to schools and to the public, teaching visitors about the natural world and its stewardship, helping to support the Alliance's mission to maintain the Park as a resource for New York City, especially those New Yorkers from underserved and low to mid-income neighborhoods. The Park's Audubon Center and Lefferts Historic House Museum provide important educational and cultural programming for both schools and the public. During fiscal year 2011, 85,712 people visited the Prospect Park Audubon Center and 50,520 people visited the Lefferts Historic House Museum. The total number of visitors to these two locations is slightly higher than the previous year. In addition, Prospect Park Alliance collaborates in a partnership with the Brooklyn Botanic Garden to support the Brooklyn Academy of Science and the Environment, a school now serving over 400 low-income students with graduation and Regents pass rates well above New York City averages.
