(SALA) was able to provide direct civil legal assistance to meet the fundamental human needs of more than 23,320 low income individuals and families in 8,640 cases and matters: 87% of those served met federal eligibility requirements imposed by the Legal Services Corporation (between 125% and 200% of the Federal Poverty Level). Services included safety and protection for children and women who are victimized by domestic violence; preservation of shelter for those wrongfully evicted from their homes; protection for those facing foreclosure; access to food stamps for people who were in need of food security; access to long-term health care for those denied services; a means to survive for disabled persons who are unable to obtain government benefits; and access to debtor relief for the protection of income and property. The impact of services provided resulted in $1,150,531 either saved or obtained on behalf of clients benefiting communities in SALA's service area. Out of the total individuals served by SALA, 2,620 were served by volunteer lawyers and law students participating in SALA's Volunteer Lawyers Program. The volunteer attorneys and students donated 6,854 hours of free civil legal services valued at $1,370,800.In addition, SALA raised community awareness of individual legal rights and responsibilities by teaching clients how to use the law and legal system prevent legal problems and self-help in accessing the courts.
